Slackware :: Fixed Conky / KDE4 Transparency - Doesn't Disappear When Click Desktop
Jun 19, 2010
This works on my Slackware64 13.1 using KDE 4.4.4, Conky version 1.8.0. This is a simple .conkyrc tweak that doesn't need feh, it doesn't have the distracting faun shadow-border and most importantly, it doesn't disappear when you click your desktop (On my system anyway). These are the relevant sections to edit:
Code:
own_window_colour black
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_argb_130
own_window_type override
own_window yes
I found that getting rid of the own_window_argb_values yes suggested in other fixes and replacing it with a specific alpha and then changing window type to override solved all my issues. I've noticed no bugs or strange happenings. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of workaround solutions. I think this is a much more elegant way. Edit: Not persistant... After 2 reboots it's back to normal.

My panels disappeared after i clicked the log out button and i had to shut down the computer by right-clicking the desktop and clicking shut-down. However when i rebooted, the panels were still gone, my icons on the desktop weren't there and i couldnt right-click on the desktop. i tried updating to 10.10 to solve the problem but that didnt work. running xfce4-panel via "alt-f2" didnt work either.

I have a problem with conky. It draws a black background instead of using pseudo-transparency. I ofc tried to achieve this with feh but to no avail. All the instructions here failed: Conky Hardcore! Conky transparency with KDE (3 and 4)

After I adjust my slackware and rebooted I saw a strange "rectangle" on my desktop. Please, look at the screenshots below and tell me how I should solve this problem.
I can't move it. Right-click menu on a rectangle coincides with a right-click on desktop. It does not prevent, but very annoying.

If I use Dosbox in full screen mode, and then exit back to KDE, my desktop icons get shuffled around.I'm using the desktop folder view in KDE 4.4.3I've noticed that this also happens with ScummVM as well, so I think it's more a KDE issue?

I'm trying to install conky on my Slackware. I've downloaded the files from slackbuilds.org (both conky and lua). I've compiled and installed lua writing "make linux" and "sudo make install", but when I'm trying to compile conky, it says:

how to remove the '.desktop' suffix appended to my icons? I unintentionally installed the 64-bit S13.1 when I wanted the 32-bit version - anybody notice the misleading text around the hole on the DVD? The 'Slackware 13.1 (amd64)' side is the 32-bit and the 'Slackware 13.1 (1386)' side is actually the 64-bit version. It fooled me, anyway, and after finding out how limited software choice was I spat the dummy and went back to 32 :/ But...with Desktop Settings>Activity set to 'Folder View' I now have this unwanted suffix added to my icons. Also, if I'm in my home directory via Dolphin and I create new folders they also appear out on the desktop!

I'm running F14 on an Intel i5 processor with a NVidia GT340 graphics card. Installation works great. Compiz Fusion runs too. At this point, the panels are a little unpredictable, in the sense that some items on the panels disappear and appear as they please; changes only come during startup. The userswitcher is usually absent (but not always). The show desktop icon is sometimes absent, and on a very rare occasion, the desktop switcher is invisible. For all of these items, space is reserved in the panel, and when manually added to the panels, that space is left blank; I can not move anything into that space. It remains reserved for the item that isn't shown.
Then I install conky. First installation works fine, shows all things that are called upon in the .conkyrc file nicely. It works fine until I click anything - even on blank space - on the desktop. Conky then disappears. The process continues to run, but it's no longer displayed. Upon reboot, all of my panels disappear, and I have no idea how to get them back. When I uninstall conky everything works again as before (the userswitcher being the least predictable item on my panels). When I reinstall conky, and add it to my startup items, it shows for a couple of seconds after log-in after which it disappears. I assume - but don't know how to check as I have no panels left so how can I run the system monitor - that the process keeps running, but it isn't displayed.

I try to configure mouse click interval since a single click is recognized as double click by doing it from KDE mouse configuration in system settings; but my attempt doesn't work even (I set the click interval to 2 sec, but doesn't change anything). What is the best way to do this in slackware?

under openbox session, tilda's transparency works. Under kde, with kwin, tilda it is also transparent, but if I use openbox as windowmanager in kde4, there is no transparency for tilda. Somebody knows why? (by tilda, I mean the quake like, drop down terminal )

I prefer to use the single-click behavior under KDE 4.4.5 / Squeeze / AMD64. All KDE applications honor the single-click settings, but GTK-based applications don't. Is there a way to configure GTK so that all file dialogs are indeed single-click?

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and I'm trying to make my panel semi-transparent.
Unfortunately, the whole thing won't go transparent, only the blank areas without applets!
I know you can hack it in Compiz, but then everything goes transparent, including text and icons, which I don't want.
As you can see from the screenshot, I'm using the Radiance theme, but this also occurs with Ambience.

Is there a way to set up KDE4 Konqueror so that middle click opens a file like in KDE3? In KDE3 Konqueror, middle clicking on a particular file would have the same effect as double clicking on it.

I'd like to conserve as many resources as possible, with that being said, I'm switching from konsole to urxvt. After compiling and configuring my ~/.Xdefaults file as such.
Code:
URxvt*termName: rxvt
URxvt*scrollBar_right: false
URxvt*scrollBar: false
URxvt*borderLess: false
[code]....
Then I run
Code:
xrdb -load ~/.Xdefaults
By the way, running Slacware 13.1 x64 with Compiz. Still no transparency.

I finally dropped Gnome and am trying to put together my own custom Xclient-style desktop, with Xmonad as my WM. My question: Do any of the desktop widget systems out there support fixed, transparent overlay of the screen? My idea was something like this: I want, for example, my desktop clock widget not to be stuck in some dock taking up screen space; but instead, it would overlay the screen in one corner, with its background transparent. That way I could always see it, but it wouldn't gobble up screen space in a separate menu bar.

Ubuntu LTS 8.04 + DHCP. Works fine except for fixed addresses. I mean all devices which need to get fixed IP according to their MACs don't get them and keep to receive random IPs from the range (although almost everytime all machines receive the same IP they got from DHCP for the first time).
The following config was created by Webmin interface.
At the one of the ubuntu forums i was advised to carry host description out of the subnet description.

ive used openbox for quite some time, but recently decided to make the switch to fluxbox. i have gotten everything up and running except for true transparency. i have seen screenshots in which this works, but i have not been able to duplicate the results.
in openbox, all i had to do was run cairo-compmgr at startup and my terminals were automatically transparent, and all the window effects i selected with cairo-compmgr were applied when i chose them. in fluxbox, i run cairo-compmgr, it starts up fine, and i know its running because i can use it's transparency settings to set whole windows to alpha (super + mouse scrolling), and the little "tab" buttons that fluxbox has have shadow effects drawn on them. the actual windows, however are not effected by cairo-compmgr running in the slightest. the windows themselves dont have shadows, and my terminals do not use transparency at all. even my xchat notifications have black boxes around them because not transparency is being used.

So this morning I just upgraded my laptop from OpenSuSE 11.2 to 11.4. I am using the Gnome Desktop (2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux).
As of right now the "Taskbar" at the bottom of the desktop, does NOT stretch all the way across the bottom (meaning it would start on bottom-left edge and go to the bottom-right edge) of the screen. Right now it is sort of centered at the bottom, and its size changes depending on how many windows are open.
So is there any way to set it to a fixed width (by that I mean I want it to take up the entire bottom of the screen x-amount of pixels high, etc..

I have a slackware server running ISC dhcpd and bind, and I want to give a dual boot XP / Ubuntu client a fixed address based on its MAC.
I added a host stanza to my server's dhcpd.conf:
Code:
I restarted bind and dhcpd, restarted the client's networking, and it still requests (and receives) its previously leased address, which is not the fixed address I want it to get. I tried dhclient -r to make the client release the old address, didn't help. On networking restart it still gets offered the old (wrong) address. Could it be that dhcpd somehow hangs on to the old lease even after the client sent a DHCPRELEASE?
How do I tell dhcpd to forget about an old lease, and how do I make dhcpd hand out the fixed address (and only that address) I specified for a given MAC, regardless of what the client requests?
