Slackware :: Can't Suspend Laptop In Slack 13.37 After Installing ATI Drivers / Sort It?

May 29, 2011

I have run into the following problem, after I installed the proprietary AMD/ATI driver for my videocard I've been unable to wake up my laptop after suspend to RAM, it suspends ok (I guess?) but when I try to wake it up the screen doesn't turn on so I have to manually shut down the laptop.

before installing the proprietary driver, it worked ok

the videocard is a Radeon HD 3200, and the processor is an AMD Turion X2 Mobile

Ubuntu :: Maverick Meerkat Laptop Does Not Suspend After Closing Lid / Sort It?

Oct 17, 2010

It looks like something must've slipped the attention of Ubuntu developers as in the previous LTS version laptop suspension after closing the lid worked perfectly fine for me (Dell Latitude D820) while after upgrading to Meerkat it doesn't work any more....well sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't - it behaves sort of like a weather in UK/Ireland there more information I could provide to you guys or is there something you could give me to point me to the right direction ?

Slackware :: Old P4 Laptop - Is Slack Still A Good Choice For Old Equipment

Apr 12, 2010

I apologize because I know this is really a worn out question, but I have a reason for asking. My wife gave me this laptop in December 2003 as a Christmas gift. At the time it was state of the art and she spent over ?1100 on it. It is a Samsung V25, P4 2.8Ghz 1GB memory 40GB HD. It still has the original XP home OS on it, and when I got a new laptop a couple of years ago, I let her have it to use because she refuses to use Linux and she did not have a laptop. Well, she stopped using it when she got netbook and it has been jut lying around. After so many years of use, as you might expect Windows now just crawls with so much crap on it and is very unpredictable (might work might not.)

My thought is that she might start using it again (and I certainly would), if I could show her that there is still plenty of life left in it. I KNOW that Slack will be faster, but before I wipe the drive (she is still kind of sentimental about me doing that), and I want to see if I can get a couple of comments about the hardware and what trouble I might expect. I ask because I have tried dozens of live CDS, and some work and some don't. For example, the newest Knoppix would not run (freezes when it tries to start X.) Anyway, the specs are

Display: Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PL
Sound: Crystal WDM AC'97 ICH4

This thing has most of the goodies that loaded laptops offered in those days (i.e. 1394 port). I am most concerned about the display because I have read about others who have had difficulty with Intel graphics. It is my intention to -Current on it, since it runs great on my main laptop. So if someone could just offer a little bit of their experience with similar old equipment

Slackware :: New Install (Salix 13 Not Slack) Volume Wheel On Toshiba A205 Laptop Doesn't Work?

Mar 21, 2010

I am playing with SalixOS which is supposed to be entirely compatible with Slack. I've never put Slack proper on this laptop. It's run Ubuntu and Mandriva both and the volume wheel always works. It does not seem to be recognized in Salix. I figure the fix will be the same in Salix as Slackware so I'm asking here. The laptop is an A205 Toshiba Satellite.

Slackware :: Installing ATI Drivers Broke ALSA Configuration / Fix This?

Jan 22, 2011

I install the ATI drivers yesterday and today I've realised that it broke my sound. I have a HDA nVidia sound card built in (with a Realtek chip), but when I run alsaconf, it doesn't find it. It tries to use either the ATI HDMI audio port or a legacy generic driver. Any hints as to how I can fix this?

Slackware :: Jack Won't Start With Any Drivers After Installing Libffado?

Dec 5, 2010

I installed the libffado from yesterday on my -current box, and followed the instructions in the README for configuration. After I did that jack wouldn't start at all, insisting that there were no recognized drivers, even when I had the alsa driver selected (alsa is working fine, by the way... I have sound). After doing some more research I uninstalled jack and built Jack2 (1.9.6) from source with the following configure options:

./waf configure --firewire --alsa --dbus --enable-pkg-config-dbus-service-dir
Now when I try to launch jack (regardless of selected driver) I get the following message

Slackware :: Installing 13.37 On Old Laptop - Fdisk Does Not Recognize The Hard Drive

Jul 19, 2011

Long time Slack user, thought I would try to update my old laptop (Toshiba Satellite with AMD K6-2 333 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive) from 10.2 to 13.37 in celebration of the newest version :-)

By update, I mean a complete wipe and reinstall, just to be clear.

So 10.2 runs well, everything looks shiny (XFCE of course) but when I try to install 13.37 I run into trouble. I figured out to boot with huge.s instead of hugesmp.s, but when I try to run 'setup' I get an error that says I have no partitions. mkay, I try fdisk (or cfdisk), but I get literally NO response - no error, no nothing but a return to the command promt. It is exactly as if fdisk does not recognize there is a hard drive there at all.

I boot back into 10.2,check the BIOS, everything looks fine, I have a drive mounted at /dev/hda1, swap at /dev/hda3. Are there some additional parameters I should be booting with? Does it matter that the hard drive is ATA?

Slackware :: Slack Won't Go To Sleep

May 2, 2011

When I try to put slackware to sleep or have it hibernate the system simply sits with a black screen. Normally it would do this for a short period of time immediately before the actual sleep state (screen powered off, croissant light on) is entered, but currently it does it indefinitely. My sleep USED to work just fine, it broke after some unclean shutdown or another, basically I just want to know what I can try resetting to try to get it back to normal.

Slackware64 13.1, running on thinkpad X61.

EDIT: Of course the second I make the post I think of trying to sleep/hibernate from the command line instead of through X/GDM (Gnome SlackBuild). That works.

Slackware :: PXE Boot With PfSense And Slack?

Sep 4, 2010

I am trying to setup a PXE booting environment in my network and I almost got it to work... Only it does not quite work yet... Basically, I want my laptop or any other machines to boot from my network. I followed the instructions from AlienBob to do so. I setup my laptop to boot from the NIC, it automatically gets an IP from the DHCP server (pfSense);

I setup my gateway/DHCP server (pfSense) as is: -The IP address from the network boot server: (the server where my slackware mirror and all tftp boot files are) -The filename used for network booting: /mnt/it-maintenance/tftpboot/slackware-13.1/pxelinux.0 (the absolute address of pxelinux.0 in my server)

I setup the network boot server (running slack 13.1) as is: -uncommented the line in inetd.conf to have:

tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/in.tftpd in.tftpd -s /tftpboot -r blksize
-added a NFS share to /etc/exports to have:
