Ubuntu Installation :: How To Save Repetitive Bandwidth

Oct 30, 2010

I want to install Ubuntu on several stand alone machines without repeating the several hundreds MBs updates on each machine using Synaptic. I understand the installations/updates files would reside in var/cache/apt/archives. So I can copy them to be used for the next machine. But specifically how? And can the non-OS files in a 64-bit machine be used in 32-bit machines' updates/program installations?

Ubuntu Installation :: Any Easy Way To Do Offline Package Upgrades

Mar 13, 2011

Is there any easy way to do offline package upgrades in Ubuntu? I was using debian's repository for the longest time to get individual packages, then found launchpad. Is there a script or something that will tell you what the dependencies are then let you copy them to a thumbdrive or something?

I know online upgrades are great but there are some cases where online isn't an option. Here's an example. Getting wine. There used to be this repository of .debs from the wine website, but now I can't find it. Launchpad has it, but it's all individual files.

When i add the repository Code: ppa:canonical-dx-team/une i am offered a list of packages for upgrade which system says is also a partial upgrade. I know i should not be accepting a partial upgrade since it runs the risk of breaking my Lucid install itself - so i have not. How do i not reject these partial upgrades due to the repo addition & still install Unity?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unity Launcher Doesn't Hide Itself Anymore / X After Package Upgrades

May 31, 2011

I've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 some weeks ago and after some minor tweaking everything has been working fine. But all of a sudden, it seems after some package upgrades, I'm experiencing strange behavior: The first thing I noticed is that after reboot the default application that should be kept in the Unity Launcher have all disappeared. The unity launcher doesn't hide itself anymore. The unity launcher does not react to changes I make via the 'System Settings'->'compizConfig settings manager'->'Ubuntu unity plugin' menu (icon sizes in launcher, hiding method, etc.). Even after logout/login or reboot the changes aren't applied, although the corresponding settings in the configuration menus remain changed.

One application that used to work as a charm started giving the following error on startup: The program 'VESTA' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 489 error_code 3 request_code 138 minor_code 4) Since yesterday everything was still working properly and today I get this strange behavior, it seems that something must have changed in between. The only changes on the system in the last 24 hours are the upgrades of the following packages:

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Server Upgrade: No Upgrades Are Available

May 9, 2010

I'm trying to update an Ubuntu Server install to 10.04. I believe something went wrong when I upgraded it from 8.10 to 9.10 in the past. Currently /etc/apt/sources.list would indicate the system is running 9.10, but /etc/issue says 8.10, as does lsb_release -a.

apt-get update and apt-get upgrade show everything is up to date. When I do a do-release-upgrade it tells me that there are no upgrades available.

Ubuntu Installation :: Server Edition - Desktop Without Upgrades

Jan 31, 2011

I know it is possible to install a Ubuntu Server Edition and later on 'upgrade' it to a desktop edition by doing

Code: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop But, as I understood it, this installs apps like OpenOffice and such too... Now, is it possible to install the ubuntu-desktop-GUI (so, actually GNOME) without installing all of the unwanted apps Apps I actually need are pulseaudio, transmission and samba, which I prefer to install separately.

Server :: Mdadm Array Migration Between Hardware Upgrades?

Jul 25, 2011

Long time lurker, still a Linux noob but Im learning I currently have a home media server setup with the following hardware specs:

MSI P45 motherboard
Intel Core2Quad Q6600
2x 250GB WD HDD in RAID1 via LVM (boot/swap etc)
8x2TB Hitachi HDD in RAID5 via mdadm (media/data)

The server mainly serves files for HTPCs around the house and runs a few VMs with VMWare server. I have recently picked up the following hardware which Im thinking about upgrading to:

Gigabyte EX-58-Extreme motherboard
Intel i7 920

My main concern is will I be able to just swap the driving into the new system and everything can just pick up where it left off? More specifically, will mdadm be able to detect the 8x2TB drives attached to the new hardware and re-assemble the array?

My buddy that helped me set this system up isnt sure so I figured I ask here first, the boards do have the same ICH10R southbridge providing 6 of the SATA ports and 2 more will be run off of the extra controller onboard. I dont have a lot of Linux experience switching out core parts but in Windows Ive had great success moving things between various Intel chipsets and architectures from P965 -> P35 -> P45 -> H55 -> X58.

Server :: Home Server Bandwidth Usage

Jan 27, 2011

I am looking to probably make a home server act as a backup for most of my data but also as a media server. I want to host all my music and videos for the most part on the server and then regardless what computer I'm using I could listen or watch. (Another question would be could I have itunes find my music on the server and play it).

But anyway, from people with home media servers, what kind of bandwidth usage do you go through a month? Comcast (ISP) limits me to 250GB and I'm thinking this is enough for moderate usage, I just want to make sure before I start the project.

Server :: Monitor When Users Get Too Much For Bandwidth?

May 17, 2010

when the server is getting overloaded with users. At present I run the server mainly as a proxy server with about 100 users. The bandwidth at the data centre is 100Mbps connection with total bandwidth used last month = 17431.16 MB

I would like to add a VPN in future but feel that this might overload the bandwidth as instead of it just being web traffic it will the entire client TCP connections. I would like to monitor this before it gets to the stage where users are complaining but not sure how to gauge whether the proxy is being overloaded. It is used mainly for video traffic.

Server :: Limiting A Sub-user's Bandwidth?

Jan 27, 2011

I run Debian 64-bit. I host GameServers on my machine. Yesterday, some corrupt files or error in configurations of one of the game-servers caused my whole system to destabilize. On checking, I saw one of the Gameserver's console giving Net_sendpacket spam errors. I disabled that server and things were fine then. It used up more than 100GB of my bandwidth in just 12 hours.

I deleted the server and copied all the files over again to fix that error. Now I want a prevention to this, if just in case it happens again. I want to limit a sub-user's bandwidth in Linux. Like if I want a user only to use 10GB bandwidth per month + not more than 5MB/second. Is there any way to do it?

Server :: VPN Setup - Dedicated Or VPS / Bandwidth?

Jul 10, 2011

I want to rent a (root) linux server to run a vpn service on it. I want to allow people to use this vpn.

My questions are as follows:
- What kind of server/service should I rent - dedicated or vps?
- Is one IP-Address enough to connect, say, 100 user? (I plan to run IPsec or OpenVPN, maybe PPTP)
- What Bandwith and/or traffic limits I need to consider to make the service reasonably fast for the users?
- Which Linux-distro should I use? Ubuntu Server, CentOS, FreeBSD, Debian etc?
- How much RAM and HDD space is recommended for such an endevour?
- Any advice on the processor type the server should have?
- Is 100M network ok or better 1000M?
- What means 100Mbps shared bandwidth in contrast to 10Mbps dedicated guaranteed per server?

Server :: Act As Firewall / Proxy - Do Bandwidth Management?

Jun 17, 2011

I wanted to implement a server for a small network, but am a bit in-experienced. The server that I want to use should be able to do load-balancing (two connections) and also act as firewall/proxy. And also it should be able to do some bandwidth management. The network that its going to serve has two parts. One part of the network should be served, say during day time, and the other during night time. The one that is going to be served at night-time should not have access to internet during day-time, but should have access to, say local mirror-server. I am a bit confused what software/hardware to use. I am planing to use EndianFirewall, but since I don't have experience, don't know if it can do all that I need (?).
