Server :: File Server Machine To Store All Data So Being That Have Got Four Identical SATA Hard Drives?

I've got 4 identical 1 TB drives and would like to use them in a software RAID configuration on my home server. I'm running Debian Linux using 'mdadm' utility to manage the software RAID. I don't know how much I've read is fact or dated or even false so I decided I would ask here to get help from people who know more about this than I do. This is essentially just a file server machine to store all my data so being that I've got four identical SATA hard drives, I was thinking about doing RAID level 5. I guess I'll start here and ask if that is the recommended level of RAID. I think RAID level 5 will be fine for my general server usage. My second issue is partitioning the four individual drives to get maximum performance / space from them. Basically just asking here how would you or you recommend I partition the drives? I was thinking about doing three seperate partitions per drive:
/dev/sda1 = 4 GB (swap)/dev/sda2 = 1 GB (/boot)/dev/sda3 = 995 GB (/)Now from that partition schema above, obviously all the types will be 'fd' for RAID and the partition for /boot is going to be bootable. My confusion is that I read Grub doesn't support booting from RAID 5 since Grub can't handle disk assembly. If /dev/sdx2 (sda2, sdb2, sdc2, sdd2) are partitioned for /boot (bootable), how would you guys configure this RAID to match up equally? I don't think I do a RAID level 1 on 4 identical partitions, right?
iam trying to sync file server data into backup server machine by command- rsync -avu path/of/data ipaddress-of-backup-server:/path/where/to/save after running it ask for root password and manually it is successful.but i want to make it automatic.for that i also tried cronjob and also generated authentication key but iam not successful in login automatically..anybody know how to authenticate root to login for storing data in backup server.
I have two identical 73 GB Scsi ulta320 scsi drives, Fedora web server is install on one drive with all web files and etc. I wish to make an exact clone of the drive that will boot and run everything as the current drive does now. Is there a download of a program I could download or purchase that would boot and make an exact clone to do the above.
I have two servers (A and B) which are identical. My idea was to have a software RAID 1 with both of them running and if server A craps out I wanted to swap the hard drives from server B into server A. When I tried to test this idea the network driver doesn't seem to want to cooperate. ifconfig gives nothing and I can't figure out why. From googling I've read that a network card has a unique ID on it (I'm assuming their talking about the MAC address) and is used in some config files which is why swapping hard drives gives two different MAC addresses and confuses the system. If that is so would anyone know exactly what config files the mac address is stored/used in? That way I can make a backup of those files and swap those out if I ever need to swap out the hard drives.
I have an IBM xSeries server with a 120gb IDE hd. I would like to use it for mail and web server at work. Obviously, I need a bigger HD. The only thing is I can't find a big (1TB) IDE HD all I can find are SATAs and this server's motherboard does not support SATA drives.
I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data
I installed debian 5.0.4 server on a PC that has both IDE and SATA controllers. I used an IDE HD to install the OS. The input device was a USB DVD unit. The IDE drive showed as /dev/hda and the 4 SATA HDs showed as /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda3 and /dev/sda4. After the OS was installed the reboot started which brought up an error: GRUB GRUB Read Error
I then disconnected the SATA HDs and rebooted successfully. So no PROBLEMS with just the IDE drive connected, grub works fine. If I reconnect the SATA HDs though grub fails with:
GRUB GRUB Read Error
The problem originated when the installation got to the GRUB implementation. Here the installer engine asked me If I wanted GRUB to be installed on the MBR, to which I said YES. The installer had listed the IDE drive (/dev/hda) before the SATA drives (/dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd). After the installation finished and the machine was restarted, BIOS looked at the SATA drives first could not find the grub stages and it displayed an "Read Error".
After realising what was happening I looked at the BIOS settings to see if the HD booting sequence could be altered. The BIOS did indeed list the 4 SATA drives first and the IDE HD last. BUT it would not let me alter the booting sequence. So I was stuck with what the BIOS doing. So I decided I take the IDE drive out and create a 20G partition on the first SATA to accommodate the OS. So now everything works OK.
(Ubuntu 10.10) I went to System->Preferences->Power Management and checked spin down hard disks whet possible. I have two internal sata hard drives. One is for the OS and the other is for media. Neither Hard disk is being spun down. Is there something else I need to do?
I have a 3 year old PC with 4 internal SATA ports. My old SATA hard drives, all smaller than 2TB, work fine. If I buy a 3TB SATA hard drive, will it work in Linux? Will Linux with GRUB be able boot from such a hard drive without a BIOS upgrade? With a BIOS upgrade? It's fine for me to upgrade my Linux to the newest kernel.
I have two drives one is a 500 gig SATA drive running Vista SP 2 now the other Maxtor 160 Gig drive is empty. I would like to install Ubuntu on that drive. Now I just though of installing from the setup however would this screw up my Vista partition ?
I have three 640GB sata hard drives that I would like to put into a raid 5 configuration. I would like to opt for a software raid 5 so its hardware independent. I was trying to follow these instructions, but they seem a bit dated.
I have three Linksys NSLU2s each running nearly identical setups: SlugOSBE 5.3 with two USB SATA hard drives in enclosures. One partition on each drive is used for software RAID 1. The third NSLU2 which has two identical 500gb Western Digital Blue Scorpion SATA drives and two identical USB enclosures (Flexmate) is giving me issues. The second hard drive keeps getting booted from the RAID array - looking into it I noticed that, for some reason, Linux is reading both RAID partitions as having an identical UUID. I thought maybe that was the issue so I've set about trying to fix it.
SlugOSBE doesn't have tune2fs, so I removed the drives and used tune2fs to create new UUIDs for both partitions (which usually show up as /dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3) on my Kubuntu 10.10 machine. tune2fs reports the correct new UUID under Kubuntu. But when I plug the drives back in to the NSLU2, it still shows the old UUID for both drives. I've deleted /etc/blkid.tab, but that doesn't seem to do anything.
i have ubuntu 9.04 i want to know if i can do a partition base on what i have right now cause when i installed ubuntu i didnt do the partition to install windows so i want to do it now or in any case how can i reinstall ubuntu again without loosing my data store in my hard drive what is best to be perform in my pc i am very happy with ubuntu and wanna keep with it but sometimes a have some app in windows
I recently finished installing Fedora 9 on a Prolient ML 330 G6 Server, but i configured the SATA hard drives to be viewed as four seperate hard drives. I was asked to merge the drives to be seen as one 800GB hard drive, my biggest fear is that we had set up Samba to share folders between fedora 9 giving specific users access to specific files saved on the Prolient server, will those settings be lost.And could you call that a File Server or do you have to enter any more settings And also if anyone could point me to a tutorial on Logical Volume Management and Raid specifically for fedora 9
I am using Dell Inspirion 1545 core 2 duo T6600, 3 gb ram,320 gb sata hddand in my bios i got 4 option (1) disable which disable sata and hdd is not detected (2) ATA where in my M$ is working(3) AHCI which mode will work. also i am using vm-ware to installed redhat linux 5.my hdd did not detected. do u need any information tell me i will post it on the same any command out put or log by which we can solve this problem.
I just finished a build of a new GNU/Linux boxen with openSUSE 11.2. I have a MSI Big Bang Xpower X58 motherboard which has two SATA controller chips, one is the standard Intel ICH10R chip for SATA 3.0 Gb/s and one is the Marvell 9128 chip for SATA 6.0 Gb/s. The BIOS recognizes the Western Digital Caviar Black 6.0 Gb/s drive on either SATA controller chips, /however/ I am unable to install (and boot) when the drive is connected to the Marvell controlled ports. As you can guess, I'd like to boot from the faster interface!
1. The BIOS allows me to select the Western Digital drive as a secondary boot device, so I know, at least at the BIOS level, it's there. This is true whether I have the drive connected to the Intel or Marvell ports. (The DVD drive is the primary boot device.)
2. When trying to install openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, the installer says that it can't find any hard drives on my system when I have the drive connected to the Marvell port. The installer finds the drive fine when it is connected to the Intel port.
3. I installed everything with the drive connected to the Intel port. I switched the drive to the Marvell port afterward and the system refuses to boot completely, stalling at some point where it starts to look for other filesystem partitions. This led me to conclude that perhaps the problem is with openSUSE and not hardware weirdness with the system having two separate SATA controllers?

What would be the best way to set this up ?OS installed on fast hdd ?Virtualbox on fast hdd ?Movie storage on fast hdd's (mirror raided) ?As for raid, i plan on taking two (1TB) hdd's and mirror them for the movies and two more (smaller) mirrored for backup storage.Im pretty sure i would want the Movies stored on there own hard-drive (faster hdd with more buffer) so not to cause and "lag" incase the server is being used/access at the same time for another use (MySQL access or what ever).Currently the server machine is set-up using VMware which is where the current Ubuntu-server is installed to/on, but now i would like to have Ubuntu as the base and use Virtualbox as means to virtual hosting instead of VMware.
there are some configuration files where linux require the password of application user, to do something.how can i to encrypt the password in these files? Or how can i to store that password in encrypted file and retrieve it in secure mode?
I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.
Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.
Where does iTunes store its stuff?
Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?
Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?
Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?
Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?
Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?

i have installed nfs server on my redhat machine.when i want to mount shared data from client(suse)machine the following error occur. "mount.nfs: mount to NFS server '10.3.31.146:/home/usbtest' failed: System Error: No route to host" both machines ping each other successfully.
I am writting a program that reads a text file (music.txt) & stores it in a Data Structure. I am a novice learning over the internet so I this is something I have never done. How do I do this?
Write a program that reads the data from the music.txt file and store it in a data structure. To implement this data structure you must use an array of songs and each song must be represented by a struct with appropriate fields. So far all I can do is open to file to read it (very simple I know) but so far is it correct?
I have a machine that is dual booted with win vista. It has 3 HD's. I created the partitions for the non-bootable drives in windows, ages ago. Prior versions of ubuntu would detect the drives, when I clicked on them in nautilus, I was prompted for my password, then the drives were mounted for the rest of the session. any idea how to mount these drives properly? The documentation linked to above describes ext3 and fat32 file systems (I tried both)
I recently aquired server with TWO hard drives.For reason unknown (hehe) i installed unbuntu server on both hard drives.This is causeing me some problems, and i would like to wipe everything and start over, would like to put unbuntu server on one hard drive and use the other for free space.P.S I have had Unbuntu server run succsessfully i am just unclear on how to clear a hard drive of any OS.Oh did i mention the first time i used linux was 3 days ago? Ye i am a newby (sigh)
