The Rsyn is working OK. What i need is to change one of the lines of the /tmp/prueba.txt before sending it to the remote machine (obviously not changing the file in the local machine), i mean, send prueba.txt to the remote machine deleting one line and adding another one...how can i do this?
iam trying to sync file server data into backup server machine by command- rsync -avu path/of/data ipaddress-of-backup-server:/path/where/to/save after running it ask for root password and manually it is successful.but i want to make it automatic.for that i also tried cronjob and also generated authentication key but iam not successful in login automatically..anybody know how to authenticate root to login for storing data in backup server.

Mainly because of the vastness of apt-get and the low risk of installation failure. Anyway, every so often I have a file that I want to process in place using some remote tool. Both machines can ssh right in to each other so I was figuring there must be some script or tool out there that would allow me to type out something like remote [file] [tool & args] to send my file to the other machine, get it processed, then get it back.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have cygwin on Windows XP running rsync to remote Ubuntu server over ssh using ADSL.My data set is about 20Gb! But, Cygwin will backup incrementally, so after the first backup the process should be relatively quick.With ADSL the first backups will take too long. I was thinking about doing the first backup by copying files to an external hard drive then attaching the hard drive to my remote server and copying the files. The idea being that rsync will pick up the files as if it had created them in the first instance. The incremental backups will then pickup from there.
Does anyone have any experience with this and/or can provide any advice? The external hd is fat-32 which is okay with Windows and should be okay with Ubuntu? From XP right click copy and then paste keeps the file dates intact on the external hd - is this enough to get rsync going incrementally?

When I execute the above file its working fine and displaying output on to the screen. How can I log the output to a file?
I've got a Debian Squeeze computer on which the graphics have packed up, but the terminal in single user mode work perfectly fine.
There are a few files on this Debian computer that I want to transfer off, to a networked computer, but I have no idea how to do this.
The destination computer is a freshly re-setup Mandriva install, without (as yet) samba. I don't think it's necessary though. The Mandriva install works fine, has graphics, etc, but can't see the Debian Squeeze computer on the network, possibly because it's in single user mode, thus prompting the problem of how to transfer the files, using only a command line.

i am trying to set up a mail server that will support users in a LAN in my school. I am using postfix on a Mandrakelinux distro.
I can send mail when I am root to the other user on my (same) machine both when in command line (mail command) and on Graphical mail client (Kmail ) but the user (sam) cannot send mail to the root account on either interfaces.
I followed the postfix configuration settings on John_Wiley_-_Redhat_Linux_Networking_and_System_Administration_3rd_Edition.
I can use on the local machine the following command:

I've got Cygwin installed but I can't figure out how to tell Cygwin were rsync will be pulling the data from; basically, how to set the directories that I want to be rsnyc'd. I read and saw a few documentation here and there, but it is very confusing for me...
courier-faxmail seemed nice, but it conflicts with Hylafax..
Hylafax help support is unclear to me...
I'm not sure jpg attachments from blackberry are "standard" jpg, and, I have no idea how to forward this as a fax...

I am running a local webserver mainly for development. I have everything set up. The issue I currently have is that I cannot shut down the machine from the command line. I can issue the command but the machine remains on. I also cannot get to the desktop via VNC.The reason for this, is that there is no monitor attached so Ubuntu says that it is trying to run in Low Graphics Mode. I found this out as I plugged the monitor in to my server.So question is, how do I get around this? How can I set up Ubuntu to get past this, or do I need to install Ubuntu Server?

I have installed CentOS 5.5 along with the Samba package. I have it configured (i believe), but when I try to access a share, it is not accepting my UN/PW. I have copied the smb.conf file from a working computer over to this one, but it is still not accepting my login. Anyone know of any other files I should check?
I have moved a working smb.conf file to this new box, and both computers have the same UN/PW's
I've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.

I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I had qmail installed using squirrelmail as the webmail. At first I can send email to any destination. After I have changed the domain, I am getting this error:

I'm using rsync for a backup-sript at the moment and want to keep all files. The files are always unique, so I want to rsync without delete any file on the destination.
I've tried with --no-delete and --max-delete=0 but nothing seens to work. Is there even a possibility to do so?
I am playing around with the idea of being able to use a cloud or instance based service to install Ubuntu 9.10 Server. This will enable me to have remote access via SSH command line.So far, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 Server + Ubuntu Desktop to a virtual machine. I can access this via SSH and locally via the desktop. However, in the real environment the only access I am going to have initially is via SSH.
I would like to be able to connect using Windows Remote Desktop or VNC (whichever is easier and most importantly - most secure) to the machine.. even though the desktop is on there, I need to somehow configure the remote access all from the command line.I've had a read of various forums and have been trawling support forums for days but can't find a working solution for 9.10 Server or that fits my situation above where I will not have any physical access to the desktop or machine to configure remote desktop. It all has to be done via SSH/command line.
Don't ask me why, but I need to back up a website with complete structure to a windows machine (so no tar/gzip - just an identical copy). I'm experienced with rsync, so I thought to do it that way. However, in the process I'm bound to lose my ownership/permission settings for each file and that will give problems when placing back certain files. Is there a way to either:
1. save those settings on a windows machine?
2. have an easy way to save the filetree with relevant information and a shell script to attach the info back when uploading files again?

I want to focus on command line machine system, network basics, and file management knowledge. In other words find out how desktop manager does it's business, so I know how to master my machine, but by and large once I have made my choices, leave it alone to do just that.
I figure I should know how applications are internally configured etc., but I also figure an apps GUI and config choices should take care of installations, and program usage as in M$ windows. Surely taking care of an applications dependencies are the responsibility of the developer, are they not?
I am working my way through "Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition (Version 1.0.0)" right now for an overall viewpoint. Can anyone suggest a specific source for a point by point explanation of the command basis of a generalised "desktop management" application (KDE,LXDE)? Better yet would be if it had some parallel comparison of the varied approaches taken by different distributions of linux.
A secondary question, is that allowed? Up to a certain point in Ms windows, a thorough knowledge of DOS 6.xx would theoreticaly enable one to more or less duplicate the actions of the windows overlay. Is there a basic distribution (or subset in all of them maybe?) of linux that would be consistent with that paradigm? What would be analogous to DOS batch files, or GM-Basic? when i use rsync command to backup my image file , it shows the following error message.

I have a tiny shell script to rsync files between two servers and remove the source files.
This script works fine, when it has been initiated manually or even when the rsync command is executed on the command line.
But the same script doesn't work, when I try to automate it through crontab.
I am using 'abc' user to execute this rsync, instead of root, as root login to servers are restricted in all of our servers, by us.
As I mentioned earlier, manual execution works like charm!
When this rsync.sh is initiated through crontab, it runs the first command(chown abc.abc ...) perfectly without any issues. But the second line is not at all executed, and there is no log entry i can find at /mnt/xyz/folder/rsync.log.
I just tried to sync files from one server to another. After the sync process, I found the files are bigger than original ones.
I looked up the web and found someone mentions the rsync daemon. So I have to run the daemon on one server before I run the rsync?
The command I used is rsync --partial --progress -r source destination
