Server :: Postfix Software - Setting Through Which Implement This?
Feb 20, 2011
I have a very peculiar issue with Postfix. lets say we have three users as user a ,user b ,user c . user a reports to user b ,user b reports to user c .Now if user a sends an email to user x then a policy is defined such that all his his email will be sent to user b not to user x. Is there any setting in postfix through which we can implement this
how the whole mail server thing works, and what software handles what job. From my understanding POP3 and IMAP are protocols to pull email from a mail server, and SMTP is used to push email to a server. There are many programs that I've seen involved with creating a mail server, but I'm trying to use just Postfix. Postfix can send and receive email right?
My server runs in my basement and runs Ubuntu Server 10.10. It uses Cherokee as its web server, and it runs several other servers as well (SSH, FTP, Git, etc). My goal is to set up a mail server so that websites I run such as a Redmine or a web forum can send emails to people (e.g. an activation email for a user registering on a forum).
Anyway, I set up postfix, and now my server can receive email. I've been able to send an email from my Gmail address to drew@minipenguin.com (my server), and it works. However, if I try to send email from drew@minipenguin.com to my Gmail, it never goes through. I don't care about receiving email, as my only goal is to be able to send it.
I'm setting up a server and trying to make it *very* secure. Before I configured my web stack, I was about to install some security packages, Tiger and Samhain, but these packages wanted to install sendmail so that they can send outgoing notifications. From the reading I've been doing, I believe I want postfix instead of sendmail. It is my (perhaps mistaken) belief that installing postfix first will prevent them from installing this sendmail I do not want.
I want to install postfix with the following goals in mind:
* let PHP scripts send mail using the mail function.
* various system notification functions (cron, etc.) will be able to send their emails
* emails destined for root@localhost will be redirected to admin@mydomain.com
* let tiger and/or samhain send their notification emails
* NO INCOMING OR LOCAL MAIL IS PERMITTED. Because mail for my domain is handled by google apps, nobody will be checking mail on this server. Also, this server has very limited disk space. It is therefore very important that we don't have mail accumulating in boxes that will never be checked.
* no unnecessary ports, services, or cron jobs are running.
I've been reading a variety of pages that describe postfix setup on Ubuntu but these articles are imprecise, incomplete, and describe installation of things I don't want like POP/IMAP/etc.
There's also one final wrinkle. I will be setting up postfix to send via Amazon SES.
I set-up his mail server for him with Postfix but what he wants I have no idea how to do.
Essentially he wants it so that the mail gateway IP corresponds with the dedicated IP of the domain and I have no idea how to accomplish this.
I found some documentation on the web saying that the fix for this was to run multiple instances of Postfix which I tried doing but each time I try to start the second instance I get the error that postfix is already running.
There has to be an elegant way to make this happen, I really hate to tell a client something can't be done even though the concept is a bit pointless, IMHO. I am hoping I can get some feedback here on if this can be done and if it can the easiest way for me to accomplish doing it.
Here is some of the config files (example.com has been put in place of the actual domain names and the ip of 5.5.5.5 is in place of the actual IPs
I would like to setup postfix to act as a relay for the outgoing mails of a couple of servers each serving it's own domain. The mails we are talking about are standard administrative emails like user registration, password reset request. The volume of those mails will naturally grow as the site grows. Which for me poses the problem that depending on the growth of the site you will sooner or later hit the quotas imposed by (my otherwise preferred) providers like GMail or smtp.com.
So what I need is a mail relay that will only accept mails from authenticated clients from hosts in its access list and relay their mail without restrictions. Is that possible with postfix? What has to be changed in the config and what are the pitfalls?
is there any HOWTO for configuring Webmin Postfix server with multiple postfix virtual hosts? Seems to be a tough challenge to set it up without any easy manual..
so i set out to change the default smtp port the server uses because my ISP blocks port 25 and i need the email to work in outlook. this morning i could receive email, but not send it. so i did some research and thought that i needed to edit the master.cf file in /etc/postfix/ by commenting out this line: smtp inet n - n - - smtpd -oand replace it with587 inet n - n - - smtpd (587 being the port i want to use)somewhere along the lines postfix server stopped running and now i cannot get it to start.if i try using SSH it crashes immediately and if i restart it in simple control panel nothing happens
I recently moved over user from an old box running postfix(v 2.0.16) over to rhel 6 running postfix (v mail_version = 2.6.6). ive tried to make sure all the files are of correct permissions and that the main.cf file is configured corectly. However there is something wrong as when i run postfix: service postfix server i get no error but when checking the status:service postfix status i get: master dead but pid file exists Looking into /var/log/mailog i find this line being the issue:
I have a server Linux/Centos 5.3 who I have formed it like server of data with samba for a network with 5 Windows XP terminals; desire to know if it is also possible to form this equipment like server anti-virus multiplatform so that it can look for virus (and clean) to the terminals win xp.
I was looking for by the network on this subject, but I have not had favorable results, please if somebody could help with some Link or tutorial me that has found.

I want to implement quota per group users like this: Assume i have a Student group in my system, that student1 and student2 and student3 are three users in this group. i want to set quota 100GB per each user in this group, 100GB for student1, 100GB for student2 and .... The problem is when i set quota per group i cant say each user in that group have 100GB quota limit, also when i set quota per user, i should set one by one for each user.I want to know, is there anyway for set quota for all users in specific group?
I have setup up an Opensuse as a simple we/application server. It handles requests for various things and will need to send out email on occasion for things like password reset requests, information / warnings etc. etc. This is a standard OPenSuse 11.x install with defaults so it comes with Postfix as the mta.I do not want a mail server I just want to send out via my clients mail server which is hosted exchange rackspace, which simply requires SMTP auth to do so.What would be the proper way to do this so ALL e-mail send from this machine, regardless of account like WWWRun or when logged in and sending from the command line has the same sender all the time.
I am putting a php contact form on my webpage that sends messages directly from the page to my email address. This script has worked in the past, but unbeknownst to me that is because my previous server was running a mail transfer client that handled php's mail() function through smtp. The web server I am using now is a home machine configured with ubuntu running php/apache but there is nothing to handle mail. My contact form says the message has been sent, but it never arrives to my inbox.
Following forums, I installed sendmail and verified that smtp was running on port 25, but the form would then hang for over a minute upon submission(and messages still would not be delivered). I then tried exim4 as a mail transfer agent which solved the hanging, but messages still werent delivered. From my reading it appears this could have something to do with my hosts file, but I am unsure how this needs to be configured (pretty new to all this and I seem to have bitten off more than I can chew).
I eventually configured exim4 to use the smarthost feature for outgoing mail, using my gmail account's smtp server (following a tutorial). My exim log file produces no errors, but messages from my contact form still are not delivered. This has turned out to be a huge, hair tearing situation and I'm at a loss on what to do next.
I have recently been asked by my boss to implement Email alerts on some Backup scripts to be sent to me and another person. I edited one of the Backup scripts on a mail server and they appear to be working without problems (i.e., the backup job runs successfully and I get told so via E-Mail). However, when I implemented this script onto another, non-mail server, it would not send E-Mail confirmations. The only server that is allowed to send Emails to the outside world is the mail server, so I did not expect the script to work without any fine-tuning.
However, I thought I could direct the non-mail server to send an E-Mail through the mail server. I just can't find out how to do it. The servers are running Ubuntu 9.04 64bit. The mail server is using postfix and dovecot for email, and is also the DNS server for that particular network section. The non-mail server should be installed with the default server install (exim4). If possible, I do not want to install any new programs on either server. How to get the non-mail server to use the mail server to send out E-Mails?
The word on all lips are "virtualization" so I decided to smell this flavor. I have a machine running CentOS 5.3 64bit and I have unlimited access to this machine, but I don't want to reach it physically. Is it possible to install and maintain a virtual medium using ssh or other remote connection? When I installed the OS I have selected the packets regarding the virtualization, but now from where can I start? Is somewhere a guide for doing this?
make install then i got this error: postfix: fatal: chdir(/usr/libexec/postfix): No such file or directory make: *** [install] Error 1 I don't understand why it's checking the usr/libexec folder for the daemons although I've set the folder to /opt/product/postfix-2.6.5/libexec in the makefile. Here is also the cat of my makedefs.out:
There isn't any separate file system for /home and we have only one (/) root file system for everything else on the system. Is there any way that we can still implement quotas for users through their home directories was mounted on (/) root file system. Do we need to have a separate file system (/home) compulsory for implementing disk quotas?
