Server :: Calling Remote Apps On Windows Server From 'buntu' Client
Apr 23, 2010
My desktop is running 'buntu 9.10 and I have recently aquired a couple of half decent servers running Windows server 2003. I have a few windows app's that I use regularly for work that I have had limited success in running with wine or in vm's. I stumbled upon a how to to call apps in a vm to run seamlessly on the host desktop and did some playing and have succeeded in calling app's on my servers from my 'buntu desktop, the command I have set in my launcher for one of them (DIALux)
My question is, can I change the default application/file association in 'buntu with a custom command so I can double click on a file and have it open in one of these remote app's??If I can, what is the correct custom command to be using as using the above doesn't work at all, it just tries to open the file with rdesktop not the remote app.
I'm looking for a free backup solution how work in client-server in both environments Linux(server) and Windows(client). in my case, i want to give a disk space quota in my Linux server for each remote windows client.
I am trying (desperately) to setup freeNX so that I can access my Mandriva box from my Macbook over my network. I have great need to be able to do this. Here's the necessary info for you: Mandriva PC: running Mandriva 2010.0 with freeNX installed from the Mandriva repos Macbook: running OS 10.4 with the Nomachine NX Client installed Now, I have followed the setup from the Mandriva wiki as well as the freenx wiki to no avail. I simply cannot connect the Macbook's NX client to the server. I get an authentication failed message. However, I can ssh from the Macbook to the server just fine (that's how I'm getting most of this work done).
This is my first post here. I hope someone can help because I'm quite frustrated by now. I'm trying to write a bash script which will start a graphical app on our Ubuntu compute servers via X. I'm using a loop like:
for machine in 1 2 3 4 5 6 do ssh -X computer-$machine "xeyes" &
I have a CentOS + Samba server and Windows XP client machines. Users, passwords and permissions are entered on the server machine.users and passwords ( same as on the server ) are entered in the XP client machine. When attempting to access a public file on the server using a XP client machine and the IP address of my server, I am asked a user name and password and none of the already entered seem to work. I cannot access the server file (prompted again and again to enter user name and password). What did i miss
I am looking for a client/server application that can allow me to have remote GUI access (eg: VNC) but with the ability to use sound.
I see that TeamViewer has a linux application out now but for my company, it would compromise security protocol because it reaches out to the TeamViewer servers to do any work.
Basically, we have applications that require a GUI and we need to hear sounds from them if they throw an alert (the app is a monitoring tool).
We are running a VNC server on it currently and when our monitoring machine was on Windows, TightVNC was able to get the sound...that is not the case with any Linux client so I am wondering if there is actually one that exists.
I wish to connect to MySQL using an ODBC connection and I'm using isql to test. I want to remote-desktop into a windows box that happens be hooked up to a linux server. The linux server uses a static IP. I've already enabled remote-desktop on the windows machine, but am wondering what I need to do server-side to make the server's ip forward to the windows machine. I know this can be done with iptables but I'm not sure how to work it.

Please help me installing GUI or Remote desktop on my server.I have installed FREENX client on my WIndows XP PC now what next to do. what configuration do i need to do.If you have any link to tutorial please let me know.

Now here what am expecting is i want to export my server's home directory to the client, i dont want to create home directories manually in the client machine, i googled about that, and it can be done through autofs.....

I have a fast computer in my office and I want the person using the slow computer in the same office to boot up and see the login window (gdm) and log-in from there into the fast computer and be able to use their session on the fast computer the same time I am locally logged in to the fast computer as a different user and session. Is this best done through XDMCP? Where is a good tutorial on how to set this up?
I am at a loss. I can not access my work remote desktop via the terminal server client on my wired box running Ubuntu 10.10. My wireless laptop is able to connect right away once I established the VPN connection. The VPN connection is established on both boxes with no problems.
When I tried the Terminal Server Client on my wired boxed, it says it can not establish a connection. Yet my wireless box gets connected immediately!
I check the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and the /etc/resolv.conf to see if there were any differences, but they are essentially the same. When I have the vpnc connection, they both recognize it and I am able to ping the IP address shown when I do a "ifconfig" on the terminal.
What can be the problem? Anything I need to configure on a wired computer versus a wireless one? What else can I check?
I have a wireless router situated in another room. I am able to access this router (and consequently the internet) through a Windows laptop that has a wireless card in it. However, my other laptop that has Ubuntu 10.10 installed on it, doesn't seem to have a wireless card in it, and I have confirmed this by running the commands
Code: lspci and Code: iwlist scan
I briefly was able to share a folder in my Windows machine, and access it through my Ubuntu machine, after connecting both laptops with a cross-over cable. However, I can't even ping the Windows machine from my Ubuntu machine anymore, after trying to configure the IP addresses. I think I screwed it up.
Also, although this is not an Ubuntu issue, I have a weird Windows problem, where I can't access the Internet when both wireless and wired ethernet controllers are active at the same time. It would be a bonus if you could solve this problem too for me. I was surfing online for a solution to this problem for quite some time, but I was unable to comprehensively understand and implement what I browsed through. Also, some of the guides, like for example, that on configuring Samba, seem to be outdated, as the terminal tells me something like the package (that was required to be installed by the guides through sudo apt-get install) has been superceded. Hence I post here for clear, concise and easy-to-understand help from you gurus. It would be great if I could achieve the end result of being able to access the internet on my Ubuntu machine (through the Windows one).
I'm trying to setup a linux box to act as just a DNS server. Its something I'd like to use just for WAN type requests and leave other domain related things to the Server running WIndows. At this point on my Linux box, I can run queries and nslookups from it. I can not however, from a Windows box, run a NSLOOKUP command from the Linux box which is telling me to check the permissions from Linux to enable that for the clients. It's enabled. From a C: I type in nslookup - *ip of Linux box* and it tells me -- Can't find server name for address.
I have a very nice SUSE 11.2 Samba PDC that runs well with Windows XP clients. I am using NETBIOS for name resolution since I dont want to put in a DNS server because my router already has one, Im pretty sure it would make things more complicated. I enabled wins support in smb.conf and made the name resolve order with lmhosts first. lmhosts lists all the ip adresses with their computer names in capitals. I hope thats right. I set up my windows 7 with the reg file from the samba wiki on windows 7 [URL].
That's great now I get the old screen from XP in windows 7 when joining the domain. I gave the machine netbios name MAINPC a smb trust account MAINPC and added the unix user MAINPC$ that should all work. I manage to successfully join it says welcome to domain, afterwards an error appears "changing the dns name of this computer to "" failed" and something bout not finding the domain controller. although I joined. then I resatart and when I try to log on it says "trust relationship failed". How to make it join and logon properly.
I have set up my Openvpn Server in Centos and it is working fine. Windows XP clients are able to connect the OpenVPN Server and access the network. This is a customized OpenVPN Gui Client. Now I need the customized OpenVPN Client for MS Windows 7Bit. I am using openvpn-2.1.4-install OpenVPN Client in MS Windows 7 64Bit. This is a executable and working fine in the said architecture. Now I want to compile this version. I am following the given steps at : [URL].. As per the direction i have copied the source from 2.1.4 and tried to compile, but compiled copy is giving the error " An error occurred Installing the TAP-Win32 Device Driver". I have tried this compilation by making every change and hack but all in vain.
I think that there are some certain steps which are missing and not documented any where. And sure that someone in forum will know the facts.
I am facing the problem in squid server. I configured the squid transparent and its working fine and browsing but when the clients are configuring the ms outlook than squid is not allowing the smtp(587) and pop3(995) request. email send and recieve are failed.
I have configured samba in linux .i can share file from windows client. we are not using any domain or ldap. using workgroup only. kindly let me know is it possible to change the smbpassword from client.
I have been messing around with freenx to see if I can support my customer via remote desktop... I have installed the server on Ubuntu Karmic and the client on Windows 7. I love linux but need the windows computer for customer work and that is why I chose to install the client on windows. I setup the server the best I could and created custom keys which I then copied to windows and imported them to the freenx client. I am looking for security for my customer and that is why I chose custom keys... There are several issues to deal with but I want to just get started to see where it takes me. I added the test server computers ip address to the freenx client configuration and tried to connect to Ubuntu... I have left the port as 22 at the moment
Desktop setting on the client...I chose vnc which seems to be a good choice according to all the material I have been reading....Other settings I have left alone at the moment to see how things work.... All that said - I have the login window asking for information... I have the password asking for information....and I have the session wanting information....? Obviously I understand that login info can be set on the server and the password...but I haven't seen how to set up that? Of course I am testing the server from a client on my home network at the moment - but the customer has his own router as do I so those settings will need to be looked at as well.
I have one Windows-XP on Machin 1 and one Linux on Machine 2. I want make Linux machine as CVS server and Windows Xp as CVS client. How to setup CVS Server in Fedora-11 machine and CVS client in Windows Xp?
i have a centos 5.5 server running tomcat, oracle xe,apache etc..i would like to be able my windows machine to access this server by name, and not ip, for example have http://backserv:7080 for oracle xe web admin and so on..i know one way is DNS, but if i install oracle on a windows machine in peer-to-peer network, i can allready access with by it's name. o i'm guessing i should do something with samba, wins or something like that.never mind i got now for the REAL complex stuff of insalling web sphere 7 without user interface (need to look for a response file).
i have an ubuntu server 4 windows client..i use putty or webmin. would like to copy some folders for example: "My houses"to be backup everynigth to the ubuntu server..can somebody give me an easy way for doing this with rsync and smb or cifs.
i installed unix services for windows 3.5 on a windows xp pro box and it installed fine. I configured nfs on the debian box and exported the ip of the client computer and forwarded port 2049 correctly. I followed the instructions for setting up teh nfs client on windows. However whenever i go to tools->map network drive and type in the server-domain-name:/file-address it says it cannot connect?
