Security :: IRC Flood/DDoS Cause A Computer To Freeze?

Nov 10, 2010

my computer froze solid, and it would not react to anything. X didn't react to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, not Ctrl+Alt+Del, so I had to turn it off using the power button.

This is the first time my computer freezes like this, the log files did not reveal any HW errors. Is it possible that someone in the channel did not like my level of Java skill, and flooded me to disconnect?

By the way; Im using slackware 13.1 with the default kernel ( and irssi as IRC client.

I know that if you eg. ICMP-flood someone, the traffic will be denied and, but can it provoke other behavior from the computer?

So my question is; can a IRC flood/DDoS attack cause a computer to freeze sub zero?

Security :: Reflective DDos ( DrDoS ) Test Tool?

Mar 2, 2011

Well someone has been putting up this attack on my game-server ports. For those of you who don't know what type of attack this is, so its an attack which is actually masked to us because the attacker uses his machine to send packets to a machine called source which reflects the packets to destination. Based on this, the UDP port under Flood at the destination starts making outgoing connections to that IP and gets rejected which uses up more than 5mb/second bandwidth instantly.

I've worked out on some security for this and now need a tool to test this against my machine. I've used PentBox but that's not really powerful to do anything. As I search Google, I find something called Trinoo but can't download or test it.

Hardware :: Diagnose Computer Freeze?

Jan 18, 2010

My old custom PC is starting to die on me. Half the time the bios won't POST, and when it does beep and start to load, the system will freeze at random. It will freeze in bios settings, loading up the OS, or just whenever it wants to. Sooner or later I actually get the computer running, and it will freeze less and less frequently until it will be able to stay unfrozen for days as long as I don't reboot it. Rebooting the machine will usually start the whole freezing process all over again. Anyway, I want to learn how to figure out what is not working on my computer. I have been switching out RAM, PSUs, video cards, and bios settings to see if I could fix it, but nope. So how do I go about diagnosing this problem? I'm pretty much assuming it's a hardware one.

OpenSUSE Network :: Installation In Xen Freeze Whole Computer From NFS?

Jun 21, 2010

I have host server for xen (11.2 x86_64) and another server holding linux images. Those images are accesible via NFS.

When I am installing new machine on my xen host and using images on nfs share; whole host-machine freeze during installation (random time, random packages, but it freeze everytime). I had to hard rebooted. Machine do not respond to ping. Performing same installaltion from local copy of same image (copy is done through NFS !) is always vithout any problem.

Xen host machine is MSI Wind and it have gb ethernet. I had some problem with it on Windows XP (disconecting) but on Windows Vista it was ok. On Linux I also did not encounter any problem so far.

Strange thing is that after hang there is no error in /var/log/messages. I would like to investigate what`s going on, what cause this freeze.

I am thing about sysrq messages, but this machine do not have any com port.

Here is output of lspci just for info

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Freeze Of 20-30 Seconds When Starting Computer / Solve It?

Mar 31, 2011

I have openSUSE 11.4 KDE 64 bit. openSUSE is really great, but I hate the freeze when I startup my computer. Desktop appears but I cannot do anything. This takes approximately 20 to 30 seconds and than my plasmoid-networkmanager shows network is up. As from this moment freeze is over.

I already tried to switch off ipv6 and put nomodeset in grub, though this is not helping. Does anyone have any idea what this is and how I can solve this?

Ubuntu :: Unreadable Files In /dev - Computer To Freeze: Graphics Driver Or Gnome Or The X Server?

Jun 9, 2011

Basically, this has required me to force restart my computer whenever something causes my computer to freeze: graphics driver or gnome, or the X server, I'm a newbie so I don't really know what the problem is.

I looked into the /dev folder today to find nvidia0 (I saw an error message once that said that it couldn't open it...), and there were TONS of files marked as unreadable/unknown file type. There were files called tty up to 63, ram up to 15, and vcsa up to vcsa7...etc. I saw this thread when I googled my problem, and I'm worried about the effect all these force restarts are having on my computer. I can't imagine this is a good thing, how do I stop/fix this?

Come to think of it, I didn't start seeing the 'blue mist' mentioned in my other thread until I force restarted the graphically demanding program that froze everything. Could this be the source of my problem?

Ubuntu :: How To Avoid Flood When Using Gparted

May 15, 2010

specs: toshiba lappy
110gb hdd, 1gb ram, core 2 duo 1.6ghz, nvidia 7600
windows xp pro service pack 3
jaunty jackalope

my problem is: i wanted to repartition (shrink xp and create partition for data storage) my hdd using gparted live cd 0.5.2-9. everything went fine until i clicked exit and reboot. after the cd tray automatically ejected i got a flood of "VFS: busy inodes on changed media or resized disk srO". this doesnt stop until i press enter. after that it reboots normally and there is no problem with the os.

my questions: 1) is that flood anything bad, is there a way to avoid this. i read somewhere that the problem is solved when using the terminal sudo eject - then push back the cd tray - then sudo eject -t. i tried that but it said failed because gparted cd is in use.

2) the first time that happened i didnt know what to do, so it flooded like for 15min or more until i pressed enter. my question is if the flood is being saved anywhere on the pc so that i have to delete it?

and a question regarding extended partition: 3) i have 50gb left that i want to use for data storage. i read that you can only have one extended partition. so since there is already one extended partition from ubuntu, i cant have another one for windows? so i can only make the data partition as primary or is there another reason why the "create extended partition" is greyed out?

last question: 4) when i set up the partition for swap i made it 1032gb big but in gparted it shows 980.53mb. is that still enough or why is it like that because somehow the sizes of the partitions seem a bit different than how they originally should be. im actually used in seeing the size shrinking a bit but i found it weird that the ubuntu partition shows 4.76 when it should be 4.5gb. i know its not much different but im just curious to know why..

partitions order: windows - unallocated (-->data partition) - ubuntu (primary) - home folder (extended) - swap

in windows the partitions are shown as: windows xp (31,74gb) - unallocated (50,05gb) - 4,76gb unkown - 24,27gb unkown - 981mb uknown

in gparted: its almost the same, only difference: there is unallocated space (7 or 8mb) between home folder and swap

Server :: Iptables Configuration For UDP Flood?

Feb 21, 2011

Banning the IP is the best way to protect your server but of course, attacker can use another IP and use a lot of your bandwidth until you find and ban the IP. So the only thing we can do to prevent this is, block the packets my iptables length module.

I check the bandwidth usage through "iftop". Incoming traffic is always like 120kb/second and that has to be that way because the traffic enters my server no doubt that it gets dropped by iptables later.

The actual thing what the Ddos ( UDP Flood ) does it that it causes an outbound traffic that eats up like 5mb/second easily and my servers lag. Only if the IP is banned, the outbound traffic comes to an end.

Now I want to use the length module to block it but it just won't work. I've tried the following and shuffled them too but no help.

iptables -I INPUT -p udp -m length --length 15 -j DROP
iptables -A INPUT -p udp -m length --length 15 -j DROP
Packet length is 15 according to tcpdump:

19:49:34.504864 IP > UDP, length 15

I don't want it to stop the flooding or anything, I just want to be notified by email or something.

Networking :: Suitable Limit Rates For SYN, LOG & Ping Flood Prevention?

Jun 26, 2011

one thing I'm not quite certain about is suitable limit rates for SYN, LOG & ping flood prevention. I suppose it depends a bit on traffic, as well as bandwidth. However, I don't want to limit the former. FWIW, I expect about as much traffic as a country road in the middle of nowhere, and my bandwidth for requests is 15 Mbps (Don't laugh. Content delivery is a pathetic 2 Mbps. That's a residential cable connection for ya...)Of all the tutorials/examples, I chose to go with Rusty Russel's limits, though they're dated 2002. Thus an excerpt of my firewall "script":

Fedora Security :: How To Tell If Computer Is Being Attacked

May 16, 2010

[URL] This web page says: "The team set up weak security on four Linux computers with Internet access, then recorded what happened as the individual machines were attacked. They discovered the vast majority of attacks came from relatively unsophisticated hackers using "dictionary scripts," a type of software that runs through lists of common usernames and passwords attempting to break into a computer."

How did they "record what happened as the individual machines were attacked"? How did they figure out that "the vast majority of attacks came from relatively unsophisticated hackers using 'dictionary scripts'"? What I am really getting at is that I've searched the net and found lots of advice on how to detect if your computer has been hacked but I haven't found ways to know if your computer is being attacked. Obviously, this group did that.
