SUSE / Novell :: How To Expand OS Drive / When Have No Room Left?

May 29, 2009

I have a hd5 (?) of 10 GB for the system OS. I had used about 7 GB and believed that adding software from a NIC would not greatly exceed space on this drive but was wrong - it now has about 40KB remaining. The system has a 2GB swap drive elsewhere on the SUSE 10.1 Enterprise desktop system, 127GB HD total. The total HD has about 63 GB of "unused" space - in the hd6(?).

I could not expand the hd5 partition using the on-board partition software and did not know how to handle it so rebooted. Now the system will not start since there is not enough space. My questions: 1) How can I/can I us the on-board partition expansion SAFELY to expand the 10GB to 20GB from a scripting bootup or similar? 2) I have GNU-parted but could not install it on the Linux before rebooting - not enough space. Can it/should it be expanded on a floppy drive or similar and be used to expand the hd5 partition? I do not have another Linux machine. How can I get out of this fix?such as creating another partition, 20 GB as hd7, moving all hd5 info. into it (by script since I cannot boot up?), then deleting the orignial hd5, and renaming the new partition hd5?

SUSE / Novell :: Program To Completely Destroy All Data In Free Space On Hard Drive?

Aug 10, 2010

I dont want to wipe the whole drive, and i don't want to delete only particular files. I want to completely destroy all data in free space.I've found some articles about secure-delete package for linux that would allow erasing freespace with the command 'sfill,' but I can't find it in the repositories nor through google. This would be ideal but it seems maybe it's debian only.

I have other distros which dont make the clicking sound when they access the hard drive. I need to prevent opensuse from making the click sound when it does whatever it's doing. Im not even sure what it's doing or what settings to change, and most importantly how do i make it not click? Maybe i could copy settings over from another distro if i knew which settings to replace.

how to install a D-Link Access Point on Suse 11.0 or steer me toward documentation that will do that? I configured the device on XP following instruction from this forum and the AP configured perfectly. The AP is plugged directly into the network port on the computer. It *should* function correctly without a router. I tried a restart and Suse has no idea it's there. The computer is currently configured for a wired connection which needs to be changed. The computer itself is going to be used as a small home storage server.

Ubuntu :: Expand Partition To The Left "Quickly?"

Oct 17, 2010

I would like to expand my root partition to the left. I already moved my 100MB /boot partition overand that took like 12 hours with Gparted, so no way do I want to use it for my 60GB partition to gain another 2GB. Is there a faster way? (Besides wiping the partition, creating the new larger one and reinstalling Ubuntu? )

I've heard LVM might be good, but it sounds like I have to do that from scratch as well, and I'd rather not lose all my stuff and start over, I just want to clean up my messy partitioning.

General :: Need To Delete Old Files To Make Room On Drive

May 7, 2010

I have a Dell Netbook which came with Ubuntu Linux 8.3 (I think) in 2008. The drive is a SSD 3gb unit and the drive was nearly full when I received it. There was only 758mb free on the drive and I wondered why they would sell a computer with so little free space on it. When the updates was installed the drive was full. Is there a way to retrieve some space on the drive without deleting programs which came with the computer? I have tried ordering a new drive online without getting one, including Dell itself. In Windows you can delete old files which will free up some space and is wondering if the same thing is possible under Linux?

Server :: How To Expand Hard Drive With New One?

Oct 27, 2009

I have a linux box that I'm using as a ADSL router (slack 12.1).Until recently I had two hard drives in it, one for linux, and one for storing movies, music, etc.So, I have just bought another 1,5 TB disk. My plan was to add it to the same mount location: /opt/abram to expand my storage disk, only to come to conclusion that this can't be done. OK, it actually makes sense, if I thought about it I would realise it before. Anyway, what else can I do? Is there a way to add new drive to existing one in a way that would result in one 2,5 TB drive?

I tried it with mdadm, but as it turns out, it's impossible to crate RAID 0 without loosing all the data on sda1 disc. Also, it would be very cool if I could find a solution that would enable me to one day add a new drive to further expend my storage.I'm aware that I could mount my new disk to, let's say /opt/abram/Divx, or /opt/abram/mp3, but that's not the solution I'm looking for.

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual Boot With Backtrack4 - Partition Drive To Make Room For Bt4?

Nov 28, 2010

finally got mostly everything fixed on my opensuse 11.3. 11.3 is my only os on my laptop right now and I want to be able to dual boot with backtrack4. I used to have bt3 but it was on a usb loading up with winxp. Anyway, I've downloaded the iso image and after hours of forum reading I figured out how to mount the iso image. Doing so allows me just to look at the files. Is there an install file somewhere I'm missing?

Also, couldn't ever figure out how to partition my drive to make room for bt4. Tried downloading gparted and failed. Tried using the expert partitioner program that came with this system but it won't allow me to create another partition. Couldn't ever find a reason why. Will bt4 allow me to create a partition upon installation? How do I install?

Ubuntu Installation :: Clone / Expand To New Hard Drive?

Oct 28, 2010

I'm looking to move my 10.04 installation from an 80 GB HD to a 250 GB HD.

Last week, I successfully moved a Windows system from an 80 GB HD to a 320 GB HD using Clonezilla. However, I must have missed a command option, as I wound up with only 80 GB used on the new drive, and the remaining space unused. I used PartedMagic to resize the partition to use the full space, and all is now well.

Back to my Ubuntu move, on the second machine, I currently have three partitions - /, /swap, and /home. I'd like to expand / just a small amount, leave /swap sized as it is, and give most of the drive space to /home (as that is where I am running out of space). I think I have two options:

Option 1: Use Clonezilla to clone the drive (3 partitions), and then use PartedMagic to move/resize the partitions as desired.

Option 2: Use PartedMagic to set up 3 partitions to the sizes I want, then use Clonezilla to copy to the new partitions.

Option 1 seems to be the easier way. But, is there another option, a better way? Perhaps there's a command option in CloneZilla that I'm just not seeing, which would allow me to do the move in one step?

Looking under my computer it is formated as vfat device name is /dev/sdb

I can't copy any files to it. Can't see in terminal even being root as well. Almost started the Partitioner in Yast but didn't want to accidently crash the system. That WOULD be my luck Can't find a way to format it via GUI interface. Can I use something like fdisk in terminal. I guess I need to format it as ext3.
