Red Hat / Fedora :: Unable To Install 14 On Hard Drive

Mar 21, 2011

I successfully created a live usb to boot fedora but, i want it installed on my hard disk.

So now i am in Fedora (via a (live fedora installed) usb).

I have created a 5GB (unallocated) partition on my 500GB hard disk.

Currently there are 4 partitions on my hard disk -

(assume original size)
C: of size 53GB.
D: of size 210GB
E: of size 210GB
G: of size 10GB to boot ubuntu(not installed).

AND a 5GB unallocated as i have stated above.

I am new to the installation of fedora to hard drive. So while clicking Install to hard drive i am stuck on the type of installation menu screen.

I dont know which one to select.i did checkout each one but after clicking for example replace existing linux system(s) what i get to see is only 2 hard drives/files on the left table.

1> my hard drive - detected as complete 500GB of space.
2> my 4GB Kingston pen drive on which my fedora live image is installed.

Then after reading the forums, i came across people asking for the output of the command sudo fdisk -l.(l means small L)

So i typed it in the terminal and this is what i got - Code: [liveuser@localhost ~]$ sudo fdisk -l

We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.
#2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility.

liveuser is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.

I want to install Fedora 14 on my 5GB unallocated partition.

I want to install Puppy on laptop HD. When I run the Universal Installer and select GParted it brings up the Hard Drive (SDA -ATA Toshiba MK6015MA 5.595 Gib) is on Old Compaq Presario 1200. I'll select that drive and hit ok it just takes me back to the Universal Installer Screen. When I first started the Hard Drive was listed and somehow I must have removed it. Is there another program where I can select the HD and partition it etc.

Ubuntu :: 9.1 Unable To Install On Second Hard Drive

Jan 2, 2010

Am trying to install Ubuntu 9.1 on hard drive 2 rather than hard drive 1(7 year old XP machine with 74 GB drive 1) Hard drive 2 is a Firewire-connected External Western Digital.)

with only a 41 MB partition avaialble for Linux).

Allocations are:

After install finsishes the boot process fails with:

Restored the MBR from a Windows CD, and thinking the boot loader needed to be in the MBR area of sdb, installed again with "Install Boot Loader" specified as sdb. Same results.

Restored the MBR and installed again with "Install Boot Loader" specified as hd0. Same results.

Restored the MBR and installed again with /boot allocated on sda2 (the 41 MB partition on the first hard drive). "Install Boot Loader" specified as hd0.

Booted successfully, but when installing updates, there was insufficeient space in the boot partition and could not restart.

Ubuntu 9.1 uses GRUB2 for the first time, so thinking "perhaps there's a glitch", installed Ubuntu 8.04 with the first set of specs described above - except "ext3" instead of "ext4". Got "Error 21" from GRUB which is the same as "no such disk".

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Login After Replacing Hard Drive?

Jul 14, 2011

I am running OpenSuse 11.4 with Gnome3, with 2 hard drives. One is for the system and has three partitions - root, swap, and home. The second is only data storage. Last week I started getting popups stating I had a hard drive going bad. I checked SMART status in disk utility and had several bad sectors on the system drive, so I cloned the drive to a new one with Clonezilla. Here is where everything went kooky. When I booted the new disk I had a ton of errors at boot along the lines of unable to find a drive. Upon closer inspection I realized the the system located the drives by device id instead of the traditional /dev/sdx. So I started playing with grub settings but never could get it to stop looking for the old hdd. Next, I popped in my net install disc and found I could do an upgrade install which proceeded normally. When I rebooted, no more boot errors, but I get to the black screen with spinning cursor and it will not proceed any further, I even let it run overnight and when I woke up, spinning cursor. As for troubleshooting, I was able to CTRL+ALT+F2 to a console and log in as root successfully but not as a user. When I try to log in as a user, I enter my username, then password, the "have a lot of fun" flashes by quickly and I am returned to a login prompt. I logged in to the console as root and created a new user and tried logging in again, but same thing. I am able to do an ls -l on /home/mike and all my files are there and the listed permissions look ok. I am at a loss as to what to try next. My old hdd will still boot, I just pulled it to reduce risk af data loss. I have never used auto yast before but I always see the prompt for it during an install. Can I clone the system with auto yast on to a different hard drive. Does it strip the by-device-id from the image? Which logs should I check?

Fedora :: Unable To Use Free Space In Hard Drive.

Jul 28, 2009

I installed Fedora 11 about a week ago. And all was going well until I woke up this morning, and started using it for a little bit. I noticed it was going painfully slow... (almost like Windows Vista >.<) and I started to look for a reason why. Turns out my free space in my filesystem is running out. I have a 500g hard drive, and for some reason my filesystem is only set to use 9gigs...

Why can I only use 9 gigs of my hard drive? And how can I increase that size to something less annoying so I don't have to delete stuff every few days? Also, I'm kinda new to Linux. So if this is a newb question, and you can link me somewhere to get the information, please do. I just spent an hour or so searching google, and using this forums search to no avail.

Fedora :: Unable To Access A Usb External Hard Drive

May 27, 2011

Running fedora14 on a dell latitude-d600 laptop and I'm trying to access a 500gb sata external hard drive that is connected via usb. The laptop can see the drive as '500 GB Hard Disk: 524 MB Filesystem' and it's clearly mounted under the '/media' directory. However, when I attempt to read the files on it, I am only able to see the 524mb section of the drive. The external hard drive is an ext3 file system (running fedora13) and I believe it's encrypted.

It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive. If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

Fedora Installation :: Hard Drive Not Recognised During F11 Install?

Jun 11, 2009

I'm reasonably noob to Linux but now seriously confused Installing F11 onto a Dell Precision 490, 4GB RAM and 250GB WD2500YS. I get through to drive partitioning and there is no drive listed. Especially odd as the drive is running F10 quite happily. Reconnect a Seagate Barracuda 500GB and restart, this is seen and is the only drive listed even though it is SATA1 not SATA0. Boot the F10 installation DVD and that recognises both drives! I have tried both AHCI and ATA modes with the same results. Can anyone point me in the right direction or do I go out and get another Seagate drive, no I can't use the existing one.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Install To Hard Drive, From F13 LiveDisc?

When I went to install to Hard Drive, from F13 LiveDisc I got to the point where it said "by installing you wont necessarily have your existing files deleted." At this point it was wanting to install to my HD. I dont know if there are more choices for places to install to after agreeing to install to my HD. I didnt want to chance overwriting my W$ OS. So then, my question is, if I continue with the install from F13 LiveDisc, to my HD, can I then navigate to VirtualBox for the install?

I have a new Acer computer with Windows 7 on the 640 GB hard drive and 12 USB ports. I want to connect hard drives to USB ports and boot them by changing the boot drive in BIOS and using the boot setup. I have an old 250 GB hard drive with Windows XP and another old 60 GB hard drive with Linux Fedora 10 or 11. On my old computer Windows XP was on the C250 GB hard drive and Fedora was on the secondary 60 GB hard drive using GRUB. tried connecting my old 250 GB Windows XP hard drive through an IDE to USB enclosure to a USB port restarted my computer, changed the first boot drive in BIOS to USB. I saved and exited BIOS. I then pressed F12. This caused a popup of a display showing all the USB ports. I was able to recognise my 250 GB hard drive. I selected it. I got a message "GRUB loading, please wait". I then got a message, "Error 17".

Fedora X86/64bit :: Install To Hard Drive" Feature Of The F14 X86_64 Desktop Disk?

Jan 5, 2011

I managed to have the ATI Catalyst driver (10.12) installed on a machine with F14 x86_64, Radeon HD 57xx and I also installed the ATI SDK Samples for OpenCL. ATI Catalyst reports OpenGL fine, glxinfo is fine, all OpenCL samples that do not use OpenGL are working fine. I used the "install to hard drive" feature of the F14 x86_64 desktop disk. Problem: which headers and libraries do I need to install in order to use OpenGL in an application? I would also like to have the OpenCL working on the system for another application.

Previously I had a small application working with SDL + Mesa library on FC9 using software rendering, but after F14 installation and ATI card addition the app is not working. Files gl.h, glu.h are missing. I checked the system and I found only a glew.h header. I tried linking against glew but it complains about glu.h (file not found).

I looked on the Internet and I found a post that someone suggested installing xorg-x11-devel, but there is no such package. I tried installing libX11-devel...f1.x86_64 but the gl.h/glu.h were still missing. I tried compiling the latest Mesa library with make linux-dri-x86_64 and it complains about egl. All dependencies have been checked (dri2proto, X11 version, libdrm, kernel version). After Mesa installation ATI Catalyst is no longer reporting OpenGL and glxinfo is not working. Am I supposed to install just the Mesa library without the ATI driver? Am I supposed to use glew only with the ATI driver?

Red Hat / Fedora :: 12 External Hard Drive - Install Video Card Drivers Get Black Screen

Sep 17, 2010

i installed Fedora 12 on an external hard drive. Everything went fine with the installation and it was working perfectly until i tried to install my video card drivers. I have done this many times before and it has worked. I have an ATI card. Anyway after installing the driver i rebooted and now when it starts it show the loading bar on the bottom but then nothing happens its just a black screen!. The worst part is that when i go into windows and my external is plugged in windows wont read it and i have very valuable data on it. I go into disk management and it shows up but windows says that its empty. which is obviously not true because Fedora starts to boot. I really just want Fedora off my external and for windows to read my external with all the files still on it. Is there a way to get by that blank screen?

Ubuntu Installation :: New Hard Drive, Unable To Boot On CD?

Mar 7, 2010

I had a little mission this week-end = my girlfriends 250Gb SATA hard drive laptop crashed this week (video card failure), and I wanted to help her by getting all her valuable data on an old Pachard Bell EasyNote laptop I have hanging around. One big problem : this laptop does not boot on CD drive, nor USB drive, and does not have a Floppy slot. There is an old hard drive with a lot of bad sectors in it, and I have a 80Gb IDE drive I want to put in.

My tools : a SATA to USB adapter, a IDE to USB adapter, a Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD, a Windows7-run netbook, and the web.My goal : to configure the hard drive in some sort for it to install Ubuntu on boot (much like when you buy a laptop : the OS installs on first boot).I quickly found this to be impossible, as there is no Ubuntu pre-install format available (or that I found). So the next step was to get a complete install on the new hard drive, one way or another.First I tried cloning the 250SATA drive on the 80GB IDE drive, but this clearly led to an error (Grub error 18. It was looking for a 250Gb drive where I only fed him 80.)

Next step was to get some kind of LiveCD-like boot from the hard drive. This is made possible by using the UNetBootIn tool and the related Ubuntu Documentation. I met some problems during the real Ubuntu Install at the point where the laptop tried to format the drive the CD image was on. This other Ubuntu Guide gives a few workarounds and tweaks for that situation, but they didn't solve the issue for me.Final idea was to Live-CD like boot from the rubbish hard drive and install the system on the new hard drive plugged in through USB. This failed because the computer does not boot LiveCD-like on the old hard drive...

I'm kinda stuck on what to do now. I still don't have a nice boot on the computer (only a Live-CD like obtained with the UNetBootIn tool), and am still not capable of doing a "real" install on the Laptop.I'm aware that solving the boot-from-cd issue would bring me a faster solution (maybe!), but the idea was to get a hang on this so that I can install Ubuntu on my CD-free netbook soon (Although my netbook might very well boot on USB, but still). My final and last idea is to go buy some kind of adapter that would let me plug the two hard drives into the laptop at the same time, LiveCD-like boot on the new one, install Ubuntu on the old one (connected directly via IDE) and then clone the old one to the new one. But I wish I don't have to go to that extreme ;o)Writing this I just thought of one thing : I could install Live-CD like Ubuntu on a flash drive, launch it on my netbook and install Ubuntu on the new hard drive connected through USB... Would that work?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Detect Hard Drive

Aug 3, 2010

my last hard drive had bad sectors so we got a new hard drive from newegg. this is a brand. new. hard drive. never been formatted before. so i started with the windows setup disc to get it to partition the drive and give kubuntu (working off 10.04 its ordered from canonical) something to work off. it still didn't work. so i got gparted on here to see if it could - im running off the live cd - do anything with it and i find that kubuntu doesn't even recognize there is a hard drive there. i got into the terminal to check the sudo lshw -C disk thing and it swears 'C' is my cd drive.

My bios is also as high as it can go, they stopped making my board. so. any ideas? i cannot install windows as i have lost the key so getting this installed and fixed has to be done through ubuntu on a live cd.

Below is results from attempt at formatting my hard drive. As you can see a driver is installed, but not working. Perhaps something is missing? Seems a bit odd that a "unable to read" comes back when disk data is reported. The drive just went through a low level format. BTW this is a fiber channel drive. Also on board are 5 scsi drives. Adaptec raid card. Not sure if that would have any relevance, but there you are.
