General :: Generate Random Number Either 1 Or 0?

Jan 21, 2010

Not only that but I need tons and tons of them generated, and I need it to be totally random each time.

matthew@mvm:/h/misc> cat a
for i in {1..5}; do
echo $RANDOM

There you can see that it is the same number. It does that every time!! Grrr. The strange thing is each time I manually type [or copy & paste] it into the terminal, it gives random [not static, like I am getting from my script] results.

The reason I want this is because I am making a script where this line will randomly go up or down [depending on if the random number is 1 or 0].

How do I fix this?I have also tried failsafe booting, but it stops at the same spot also.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Connect To A Small Number Of Random Websites: Otherwise Networking Is Fine

Dec 29, 2010

I was having no problems (that I knew of) browsing the web since installing Ubuntu 10.10 a week or so ago. I was previously trialling Win7 as my customers will likely be using that in the future. Then I wanted to go to Got the following: Quote: Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at or Quote: Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to

As it was just after Christmas I thought it must be down, for upgrades or maintenance etc. I later tried to go to; same error. I've been having a small number of other websites give the same error. I thought nothing of this until I tried it on my wife's macpro. I could log onto all the websites I wanted to and none gave any indication of having been down. Both boxes are on the same adsl connection. I still can't access internode or freebsd on 10.10 yet have been able to access every website on OSX. Now, I was only looking at them for info but am worried I won't be able to access something important. (so far everything I 'need' is working)

ping just drops out. edit: weirdest thing! I just retried and now can not emulate the problem for internode. freebsd still won't show. that is less than five minutes between problems and resolution! I hadn't even posted! But I still would like to have an idea of what is going on. Here is the ping error for freebsd: Quote:

Programming :: MySQL - Get A Random Selection Of An Ordered Data Set

Jan 11, 2011

Given the following data structure: Quote:

What is the minimum possible MySQL query to get a random data selection that includes each Index number only once and ordered ascending. The maximum index number is known. For example running the query should get the following data: 01, 06, 07, 02. Running the query again, you may get the same data or another possible combination like: 01, 05, 07, 04. Of course you could run a loop for 1 to max_index and process a random ordered data selection until the next index number is found. But I think this will result in too many database access. Also you could run max_index queries to get all IDs that correspond to the given index and randomly select one ID for each index.

Programming :: Perl Match Character - Random Sentence Generator ?

Aug 11, 2010

I am trying to make a random sentence generator in perl. So far I can loop it x times to make a fixed quantity of words, but I don't want to do that. Or I can let it go on until I hit ctrl-C :/

I want to have it so that when it reaches a word with a sentence terminating punctuation mark it stops.

My attempt to do that was with:

This is doing the woooosh text until ctrl-C thing...

Now however I am not sure how I can cut off everything after the punctuation mark (when it exists).

Programming :: Grep For Exact Number 0?

Aug 6, 2010

1) I need to search a field value to check for exact 0. If the number is 0, it should throw error.

The line to be searched looks like as below. "Output Rows [1], Affected Rows [1], Applied Rows [1], Rejected Rows [0]"

Here I have to search whether the affected rows is 0. But the code below picks up other values also (lie 10, 20.. etc). How do we write to get an exact match for 0? Code: affected=`echo ${line} | cut -f6 -d" " `

affectedcount='echo ${affected} |grep 0 ` 2) Also, I need to check whether the rejected rows > 0
Code: rejected=`echo ${line} | cut -f12 -d" " `
rejectedcount='echo {rejected} |grep [1-9]`

3)Can we combine these two statements in a better way to get the desired results?

Programming :: Getting Number Of Digits In Uint64_t?

Jul 7, 2011

I'm having a hard time trying to get the number of digits in a uint64_t variable. The reason I'm using this is I want to make sure I get x amount of digits inside of a variable before I use it, but since the higher the digits, the better the program is.I currently use the following code, and it works, but my loop will never exit because the length is always 0:

* numbdigits()
* number: The number to evaluate [in]
* Returns the number of digits found in a number.

getrand() returns a uint64_t as well (and works). The only way the while() loop ends without my intervention is if I do curd += numdigits(val) instead...but, that gives a false value as well.
