Programming :: Running More Than One Script In A Bash Script And Piping Results To SSH?

Jun 8, 2010

how to set the subject of this up.. but here is what I am trying to accomplish (please keep in mine, this is only my first month playing with ANY Linux programming): My shared web host limits running 2 CRONS or 2 SSH sessions at one time. I need to run more than that.. So, my solution is to run what I need on my home computer, and then push all the results via SSH to my web server.

To keep things timed, I am trying to call 4 bash scripts from inside of 1 bash script... Each bash script has variables I need to export out to the remote (web) server. Being that I can only run 2 SSH or 2 CRON sessions on the remote, it wouldn't do me any good to open up CRON or SSH remotely or locally - either way I'm maxing out. That is why I would like to call 1 final script that takes the output of the 4 bash scripts and does the job.

Main bash calls via CRON every 30 minutes:

Code: ./script_1 &
./script_2 &
./script_3 &
./script_4 &

[code]....

I need to scp the file saved by wget to the remote server. I also need to pass the SQL statement generated in each script as a command in SSH. I'm lost how to get the info from "script_x" into a string that can be used to SSH - and doing this all inside of ONE SSH command. Would I store the SQL strings in a file and call that in the SSH command line?

If so, what is the command to make sure the variable output in the "script_#" file is sent to a file? Can I call the variable from the main Bash Script? Now - the good news is, I can SSH from my local machine to the remote one.That is about as far as I got.Again - I am so new to this that my ears are still wet. This has been something I have been working on for a while, and I'm just lost at this point.

Programming :: Piping In Bash Using Python?

Dec 16, 2010

I have a bash script that I want to import in to Python, mainly just to see if I can or not. However in the script I do use some piping of commands into sed to trim it down to what I need. When I tried doing it with the os.system() call, it didn't work. The exact error is

sed: -e expression #1, char 16: unterminated `s' command

However the command that was run can be run in bash without an error. Is there a better/another way to do this? For reference the command is:

Code:

locate -n 1 wp-config.php | sed 's/wp-config.php/
/g' | sed '/wp-config.php/ d' | sed '/^$/ d'

Programming :: Bash : Searching For Info And Changing The Color Of Keywords In The Results?

May 5, 2011

(bare with me as I am sort of new with scripting) I am trying to figure out how to run a script that does a basic chkconfig and to get only those services that are running, but changing the color of "on" to red in my output file. Here is what I am working with so far:

Quote:

#/bin/bash
RED=$(tput setaf 1)
BLK=$(tput setaf 0)

[code]....

*I had to substitute a "-" and <colon_symbol> for ":" in front of the on's, because the forum thought they were smiley faces (i.e. n) how to make the "on" to be red while the rest of everything remains in black text. I have been trying to read up on sed and awk, but it is still pretty much a mystery to me right now. There will be other things in the output file that I wouldn't want a rogue "on" to be in red, so just the instances of "on" in that one chkconfig return.

Programming :: Piping Cat Output To Variable?

Jan 10, 2010

New to ubuntu and shell scripting in general... currently I stored some data into a text file. Right now, I would like to output the data from the text file and store it into a variable. Here's what I have so far:

READ_FILE=$(cat $FILE_NAME)

This definitely works and READ_FILE has the necessary data. However, this command will trigger an output to std output and I will see data on the screen, which is not what I want. I tried:

cat $FILE_NAME | $READ_FILE

and various other variants of this. It does not output to std output but neither does anything gets stored into $READ_FILE. I tried:

cat $FILE_NAME >> $READ_FILE

and it arrived at an error of "ambiguous redirect".

Programming :: BASH - Can't Check If XScreenSaver Is Running

Feb 26, 2011

I'm having trouble trying to make a script. What I want to do is check if xScreenSaver is running in my user account. If not, run it. If it's running, kill it.

So this is the script I've made:

Code:

The problem is that I've echoed the output of $(pgrep -u $(whoami) xscreensaver) and it always seems to add 4 numbers to the pid, even if the pid doesn't exist. What do I mean by "doesn't exist"? That no xscreensaver is running in my user, and if I run pgrep -u $(whoami) xscreensaver in bash, I get not output, but if I run the command though the script, I get (for instance) 4050. If I run it again, I get 4054, and again 4058... etc. What the hell is going on with that?

Programming :: Change Running Path In Bash

Feb 5, 2010

We have a custom app that runs on boot on some older hardware running DSL linux, and their startup manager was quite simple. We purchased some newer Asus eeebox's which run xandros and things are quite stable and run nice with 1 exception.The application only runs from the root (/) location. This box auto logs in as 'user' and there is a /home/user/.kde/Autostart folder where you can stick scripts to run at boot. So I have a start.sh script, and with little bash programming tried things such as;
sudo cd /
sudo /startapp.pl

but the errors start spewing with the basic;can't find data/xyz as it's looking in the local.I thought there was a basic cwd (change working directory) but everything I try just forces the run from that location.Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated, but things like can you change the code, etc. can't be done, so it must be a programming thing. The only other thought I had but not sure, can you do a cronjob with @boot or something, that when the box starts, it can run this job as root and fire off?

Ubuntu :: Bash - Open Mlocate Search Results?

Mar 22, 2011

Upon a while of searching, I think I failed to find the correct terms and I'm posting here. I often use mlocate to search for files. For example, if I say

Code:

$ mlocate temp_2.pdf

I'll get two results:

Code:

/home/kmc/Documents/latex/temp_2.pdf
/home/kmc/Documents/latex/test/temp_2.pdf

Now if I want to open one of them, I'll have to either open Acroread and browse to their locations. Or select and copy, and call acroread in terminal like

Code:

$ acroread /home/kmc/Documents/latex/temp_2.pdf

This is tedious to me. I'm thinking of a way of quickly open its search results, I've tried pipes like this but it doesn't work:

Code:

$ mlocate temp_2.pdf | acroread

maybe it doesn't work this way. So what does the trick? What's the name of this trick? I've googled for

Quote:

Linux bash catch output, pipe output, open mlocate results And is it possible to handle multiple lines of output, e.g., can I choose which line of output get forwarded to relative programs?

General :: Running Git-svn With Cron Results In Garbage

Mar 25, 2010

I've setup a git-svn repo with cron to fetch from the svn repo daily. I have a script to do the fetching, and this is what is invoked by cron. Everything is fine with the repo, and the script works fine when executed manually. However, when it runs under cron, empty files get dropped into the .git directory. The files have names that look like they are some base64 output, e.g. juTrvjP6m8 and kcKf3hu3b4. Two of these files show up for every cron run. I thought these might be commit hashes, but they're not, git-show says it's an unknown revision. I set-up the repo as follows:

[code]...

The last line pushes the repo to a separate (bare) public repo from which others can clone. I'm piping the output from the cron job to a file, which looks like this:

[code]...

The line "fatal: unable to run 'git-svn'" is alarming, but the fetch seems to go ahead anyway. Where are these empty garbage files coming from, and how to stop them? Am I in for bigger problems in the future?

The files for Angstrom that I copy directly onto a formatted SD card boot up fine on the BeagleBoard, but I need Ubuntu on there and can't do it with these image files. The command I use is:
