OpenSUSE :: Get Back Floating Window On Desktop?

Nov 1, 2010

I was fooling around the desktop configs. and somehow I lost the floating window with "my computer, open office..." shortcuts etc. I'm not sure what I did or what to look for.I know this is ultra simple for OSS vets, but I still feel like I'm about to crash the Star Ship Enterprise

I would like to use the "suspend" function on my desktop too running an opensuse 11.1 with default kernel, but when I restart the machine the monitor is black and the only solution is to reboot it.

Is it possible to use the "suspend" on desktop? Where is it possible to get the information to make it possible?

OpenSUSE :: Lost KDE 4.3 Default Desktop Window - New 11.2 Install

Nov 15, 2009

This is a new, two days since release 11.2 install on a freshly formatted drive. I lost the KDE 4.3 default semitransparent Desktop Window with all the desktop folders. I believe what happened was when the mouse went across this window, the window side pop out with the X at the bottom appeared, the mouse pointer continued onto the "old style" desktop far away from this pop out and I clicked on blank "old style" desktop. This window appears to have treated this as selecting the X in the pop out, which I probably went over without clicking on my way past it and this window is gone. I have changed to "folder view" since I can't figure out how to restore this window for the "default desktop view".

How do you restore the semitransparent default Desktop Window when its no longer in its own "view"? The jury is still out on the obviously improved, but still not ready for prime-time KDE 4.3. I feel like a Microsoft OS user being forced into using a "new" burdensome/buggy interface I don't want or need at all. Even the KDE 4.3 manual admits some things (only some?) will not work as expected. The KDE 3.5 interface did everything I "needed" quickly and without problems. I've already had enough abuse from MS, please stop emulating them.

OpenSUSE :: Change Gnome Desktop Icons Back To Previous Settings?

Jan 15, 2011

I have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

If any window opens initially on full screen (maximized) the "desktop effects" switch off. I then have to reset "enable desktop effects".

It happens with any window from any application that opens full screen.

If a window is maximized after it has already opened all is fine, it does not stop the desktop effects.

Running: openSUSE 14.4

OpenSUSE Install :: Kernel Floating /var To Death

Mar 21, 2010

I tried to install the kernel (as suggested for security reasons) twice, and each time, I got a *BIG* mess up of the installation. Here is the story (I'll try to keep it short): The installation of the kernel was not a problem, it went fine both time (I just had to reorganize Grub entries a bit). At first, all was running normal. Suddenly, after having left the computer idle for a moment, I was faced with a black screen (blanker probably) and I could not wake up the system: no mouse, no keyboard, all seemed to be frozen and I had to press the reset button.

After the reboot, and as soon as the desktop was loaded, I got an error message saying that /var has 0 bytes left ! The nightmare began... The first time that happened, I tried to find what was wrong in /var and /var/log , but found nothing abnormal. The info given by the Diskinfo tool were strange, sometimes showing /var as 100% full, sometimes it was /home that was 100% full and some other times it was /. I tried to fall back to kernel using Yast, but it failed at the middle of the process. At this point I realized that the system was very unstable.

I then booted the Install HD and run the repair mode. Some errors were found and corrected, but in the end, the system was not repaired; and worst, Grub lost all entries except the floppy one. (Hopefully, I knew how to boot the Install HD from Grub's command line). I tweaked again and again, and finally got my system up again with kernel (don't remind all the steps). Recently, as the kernel update was still suggested, as there were other updates in the meantime (like mkinitrd), and as haven read anyone else complaining about, I decided to give a try again.

And again, a couple of days later, same symptoms: black frozen screen, no space left in /var. As I knew the system was unstable, I immediately booted the Install HD. Tried the repair mode and it failed (just mess Grub again). Tried to (update) install kernel from there and it also failed. I then started the rescue mode and tried to delete some big files in /var (again I did not found any monstrous thing in there), then tried again the repair and update process with no better results.

From rescue mode, I finally deleted everything in /var (that was not a good idea as I also deleted some NEEDED files)... Got the system to boot, but only to the text login: nscd failed because of missing files in /var, starx failed because no X server found, ... Fed up, I lastly decided to "update" all system base RPM, the Gnome and KDE desktop environment from the 11.2 install HD, then update everything again with Yast Online Update.

Ubuntu :: Put Back Wiped Window's Files To C Drive?

Aug 3, 2010

I accidentally wiped my mounted c drive with rm /media/MY_C_DRIVE/ -r (The actual path is /media/51FAEE1F4B26FD12/ - that's why I wasn't aware of it). After 3 seconds I realized that I just did something terribly wrong. I hit Ctrl+C to stop but it was too late. The important system files were gone and I couldn't boot into windows. So far, I have tried to recover the files with photorec. I could recover about 68,000 files from that c drive but the names are f000001.exe, f000002.txt, f000003.jpg,. I don't know what these files are and where to put them back. Is there any way to recover these system files?
