I have Opensuse 11.3 with kernel 18.104.22.168-0.1-default i686 and use KDE4-4.5.1 from the new OpenSuse repo. My system sometimes freezes while using Firefox or Chrome and also sometimes playing with Kpatience or browsing images with Gwenview.
My video card is an old Sapphire Radeon working with radeon module and desktop effects are off. The only way to bring up the system is hard resetting. I tried also the desktop kernel with no difference.
I'm using OpenSuse 11.3 with last kernel 22.214.171.124-0.1-default i686 and KDE4-4.5.1 from the new repo. When I reproduce a video from one of my USB disk, after a while it stops waiting for the disk, then go on. This behavior is not related with the program used to reproduce (Kaffeine, Mplayer, VLC) and is present in both my USB disks, one with ext3 fs and the other with ntfs fs.
Trying to install Opensuse 11.2 (64bit) on a new machine isn't working well. After loading the linux kernel, the green screen with the progress bar appears, and the mouse and keyboard turn off (at least, the leds go out and there's no response) The progress bar never moves. Esc key doesn't work either. I've tried safe mode install and other options, but the same result follows.
It's going onto a Tyan S2912 with AMD 2347HE. The hard drive is a Western Digital SATA drive I bought today. There's 4GB of RAM, and the DVD drive is a Toshiba USB unit. I don't know what else to say about it. If it helps, I've been running Pelican HPC (live) without a hard-drive andgot tired of setting the network configuration and installing a ouple of programs with every boot. (Which is why I bought the hard drive today). I want to install Opensuse 11.2, but I've tried Debian (no luck on detecting the hard-drive) and Windows 7 (installed fine, but there are no drivers for the embedded video).
After migrating from openSUSE-11.1 to openSUSE-11.2 together with a few further online updates including a kernel upgrade to 126.96.36.199-0.1-desktop, my system started freezing a couple of times for two days.
I made up my mind googling for "linux freeze", found a hint saying, that 188.8.131.52 causes trouble, fell back to 184.108.40.206-0.1-desktop, and voila: the problem is gone. What a relief!
We have just installed the 11.3 version of opensuse in a Dell Poweredge T610 with 8 Gb in RAM and two (2) Xeon Quadcore proccesors. Well, the first time the Opensuse resets the computer, after the installation (it was fine, w/o any problem) the system goes frezze showing a screen which reports a BUG ERROR in the Kernel code, specifically:

After a "button off" reset the machine boots fine and we could finish the configuration of the applications that we needed. We tested the machine by two days and it didn't show again the problem mentioned, and we believe it was a little bug in the installation, but today, the server halts again in the boot process 3 (three) times before it runs again well.We have repeated this installation in other computers, one in a 32 bit version and other in 64 bits version (like the Dell) and only in the last one has repeated the problem, I mean, no problems in the 32 bit installation. Fortunately, this new server is just a replacement for an old machine, that is running with the 10.3 version. Perhaps, does we continue using the 10.3 instead of the 11.3 meanwhile it is deputed?
I'm fairly new to linux Red Hat. We are running Rhel 3 on our VM's. We ran into a issue, (Bug 121801 - athlon-smp kernel does not support >4GB of RAM. what the stepos are to upgrade the existing kernel to the new i686? .
differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.
Could someone give a step-by-step tutorial on how to do this, for someone with no more than a basic understanding of navigating the OS?
I'd like to include architecture specific flags instead of the generic i686 ones if possible.
So far, my tests have revealed that Arch Linux runs faster than Debian several media apps. I initially thought this was due to the i686 optimization of Arch, but other mentioned it could simply be a kernel timer issue.
I know for a fact the differences aren't due to bloat, and I've installed both OSes from minimal install means. Only the absolutely needed dependencies have been installed.
I just upgraded my box to ubuntu 10.4 from 8.04, as usual fast and without complications.I want to use the i386 kernel instead of the i686 (2.6.32-24) with aptitude and synaptics I have downloaded and installed but when I restart it jumps directly to gdm, no grub to choose, I also try to unistall the i686 version trough synaptics, as I did in previous versions , but I couldnt find any linux-i686 entry

All that I want is a 32 bit - linux-2.6.30, because NCTUns 5.0 works only with the 32-bit kernel. I have tried following:

How to install the kernel as 32-bit along with the existing FC-9 64 bit kernel.
I had fedora 12 installed on a Macbook pro Intel first generation with ATI Radeon graphics card (see the attachment). Compiz crash when trying to watch *.wmv movie codified with wmvvc1dmo on kernel-PAE-22.214.171.124-67.fc12.i686. I want to convert the film to *.mpg, then I download the mplayer codecs in order to see the film, I can do it without problems with the on kernel-PAE-126.96.36.199-174.2.22.fc12.i686. But I updated my system last Saturday and when I was trying to see the movie again the computer began to respond really slow, then I began to close applications and when I tried to restart I got the message: "compiz is not responding".
I tried again but the same problem. Other thing that I noticed is that when the computer go to sleep, when I wake up it, the display show horizontal black spikes, it is like it doesn't have the appropriate refreshing rate. I think that the problem is related with the acceleration on graphic card. Yesterday, I booted on kernel-PAE-188.8.131.52-174.2.22.fc12.i686, and I watched the film, and the wake up was without problems. That is the reason I call it a regression.
One of our F14 machines was originally set-up with the i386 Kernel. I found out it had a kernel crash and the person tried to fix it by reinstalling the kernel, unfortunately they installed i686. Now some of our software that was setup to work with i386 is not cooperating. Is there a way to switch from the i686 kernel to i386 without reinstalling the system?
I have read all of the articles I could find on the problems. I am using the lilo bootloader as grub doesn't work. I have also added pci=nomsi to my lilo.conf and ran lilo -v. I can get the system to boot with kernel-2.6.18-8.el5. However I can't get the system to boot with kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.el5.i686.rpm. When I boot with kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.el5.i686 the system hangs after it prints bios data check successful. I tried adding suppress-boot-time-BIOS-data to my lilo.conf (I ran lilo -v after the change) and the system still hangs. The Optiplex 320 is running bios 1.1.12
Why won't newer kernels work? Is there a way to get more information to print before the hang to aid in debugging?
- I thought that the kernel-desktop is the one optimized for desktop usage - The KDE and Gnome live cds are used by people who want to use their OS as a desktop. I mean I doubt that anyone would install a KDE live cd on a server
So the live cds why have the default kernel installed on them? Just of curiousity, it is not a big deal to remove the default kernel and install the desktop one, but if the desktop kernel gives better experience on the desktop, that one should be used on the live cds too.
After updating to kernel-184.108.40.206-147.fc13.i686, my email (Thunderbird) fails to connect to the pop-server, and webpages (Firefox) load VERY slow, if at all.When I go back to kernel-220.127.116.11-85.fc13.i686, I have no problem at all.Network chipset: RTL8180
Recently, I upgraded 11.1 to 11.2. Everything seemed to go fine. However, for some reason the system boots with the debug kernel - 18.104.22.168-0.1-debug. According to Yast every kernel under the sun seems to be loaded on the system. Grub, however, gives two choices - one for the regular and one for the failsafe system. They both boot to the debug kernel.
How do I get this thing to load into the regular, as opposed to the debug, kernel?
Now I've got debug, default, desktop, ec2, trace, vanilla, xen installed im my system. I usually only boot with desktop, and I was wondering if it is OK to remove other stuff except debug, default, and desktop.
