OpenSUSE :: Words Unexpectedly Disappear When Typing (in Multiple Applications)

Jul 15, 2010

I have trouble when typing in Open Office Writer, Kmail, and zim, among other applications. It's not due to unintentional use of the 'insert' key, either. When I type in these applications, the word I am typing often disappears entirely if I don't add a space, return, or punctuation at the end of the word, or use the arrow keys. For example, when setting up a profile in Kmail, I typed my email address into the settings dialog box, and it kept removing the last part of the address: "" would always become "myname@univ." unless I added a space after the edu.

When I first encountered this behavior, in Writer, I thought it was a bug with the AutoComplete feature. But now that I've seen it in other applications, I think it is something more general. how to stop the unexpectedly deletion of words while typing?

Software :: Applications Not Taking Typing Input?

Jul 8, 2010

I'm using an application, then suddenly, it won't take any typed input. Happens on my internal and USB keyboard (is a laptop). Happens usually to just one application at a time (I can type in other applications). The only way I see to fix it is to quit the application, and restart the application. Very bad if I have lots of work open!

Software where I have seen this problem:

Ubuntu :: Having OpenOffice Replace Multiple Words Simultaneously

Apr 27, 2011

I have a list of approximately 50 words that I'd like to search documents for and delete those words. I was wondering if there is some type of automated process for removing multiple words rather than me manually putting each word into 'find and replace'

On that note I guess I could write the Macro in python if there isn't anything out there that does this. However I read that open office only works with python 2.3.5 or something of that nature, and I have already installed 3.1. Is that still going to be an issue?

Ubuntu :: Apps Disappear From 'startup Applications' List

Nov 8, 2010

I've been trying to add applications to my "Startup Applications" menu. Most of the time, they "stick," but sometimes simply disappear, either immediately or after a variable length of time (sometimes more or less immediately, sometimes after several restarts, or anywhere in between). I've noticed that, when they stop booting, their entry disappears from ~/.config/autostart, but changing permissions on the affected files (e.g., removing write access) doesn't seem to help.

Any suggestions? Re-adding the same things over and over gets frustrating after a while, and I can't figure out why these entries are disappearing.Currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 with an Intel Centrino Core Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM.

Ubuntu :: Use Multiple Words / Terms (boolean AND) With Gnome Search Tool

May 27, 2010

I just want to search file names, not their content.

Using gnome-search-tool, if I search for "word1 word3" I can't find "word1 word2 word3.txt" but I do find it (and too many others) if I just search for "word1"

I would have thought a boolean AND search would just be automatic, but I guess not. I've already come across searchmonkey, but I'm not smart enough to figure out how to set it up to do this - i.e. I don't want to have to use regular expressions or be typing "*" all over the place.

P.S. I do use google desktop search, but I hate using it as the results are way too narrow to be of any use and haven't been able to figure out how to widen it.

P.P.S. I also found this: In terminal type gconf-editor and find gnome-search-tool in the Apps. Then look for the field quick_search_second_scan_excluded_paths and change the slash to nothing, i.e. delete the "/".

It worked for my ubuntu 10.04 pc, but not this one (ubuntu 9.1) - so I thought maybe there's another way...

Applications :: Automated Install Of 30 Applications Across Multiple Distributions?

I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

Mainly, the accents (etc) don't work (they come 'a'e'o), and that's important for me.It happens unexpectedly; at least I have not been able to put it in relation with something I did (anyway, it had never happened before). In Personal settings -> Input Devices -> keyboard everything looks normal, nothing changed.I don't know where to begin to find a solution. OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Sound Crashes Unexpectedly In Firefox Flash

May 2, 2010

flash version 10.0 r45 in firefox plays video, graphics, and sound just fine. however, while i'm playing a video on videos, or listening to pandora, the sound could unexpectedly crash. when this happens, sound doesn't just stop playing. it keeps playing but loops the sound every second or so - it's kind of strange to describe; the sentence, "hello, how are you?" could sound like "he-he-he-he ar-ar you-you-you". has anyone experienced this? i say it happens 'unexpectedly' because i can't replicate the crash on demand, but it happens in every firefox session. it seems that it does not matter what i'm doing - i've tried crashing it by making a flash video full screen and exiting continuously etc. because sometimes it happens when i'm going to full screen or changing tabs.

however, most of the time it happens when i'm not even touching the computer - i'm not sure if some background process can cause flash's buffer to overflow, or whatever. other times, it doesn't even need me to play anything for it to crash the sound in flash - it could loop sound from the first time i tried playing it in flash in that ff session. even when i exit firefox or pause the sound it takes a few second for the loops to stop. however, when i restart firefox the sound is fine until it crashes again and i have to restart, again! i tried removing libflashsupport as i read in other threads that it causes sound issues - no luck there. i uninstalled, installed and all that jazz. tried strace - doesn't report any flash errors for some reason, or as far as i can understand.

i also installed the flash debugger for use with the firebug extension, flashbug addon in firefox, but i'm not getting anything there either - i think it can't locate the flash debugger, although it lists the right version. i haven't had this problem with chromium yet, but i mostly use it when flash sound in firefox crashed and i don't want to reload ff; i think they use the same ''? also, just to clarify, sound from the mplayer plugin works fine, and when the sound crashes in flash it does not cause ff to crash and quit. firefox continues to run normally but when i play sound in flash it starts looping. i've had sound problems in the past and i'm thinking there is something i messed up in the packages i have installed. i uninstalled pulseaudio because it was the only way i could find to get my skype working. how would i know if there are conflicting elements?

here's what i get from 'lsof | grep snd':
firefox 956 angelos mem chr 116,4 3850 /dev/snd/pcmc0d0p
firefox 956 angelos 120r chr 116,2 0t0 3751 /dev/snd/timer
firefox 956 angelos 122u chr 116,4 0t0 3850 /dev/snd/pcmc0d0p
firefox 956 angelos 123u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
keytouchd 4518 angelos 4u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
knotify4 4683 angelos 12u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
kmix 4690 angelos 10u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
keytouchd 8563 angelos 4u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0

it seems to me like there should be a conflict between all those using the same sound control? however, why would it just happen unexpectedly? also, is there a way that i could dissociate sound from firefox without having to reload a whole session with many tabs?

Usually the documentation you find online to install programs assumes the end user knows how to install.I need to know how to install the touch-pad driver from start to finish and all steps in between.

OpenSUSE :: Spaces Allowed In-between Words In A File?

Jan 12, 2011

I tried Suse five or six years ago and ran into an issue that was not comfortable to work with so I went back to windows. The problem was open spaces between words was not permitted with my music files. I have transferred all of my CDs and LPs to MP3 and have a tremendous number of them and the Suse of five years ago required I convert a title like Foggy Mountain Special.mp3 into something resembling Foggy_Mountain_Special.mp3

I don't care to convert literally a hundred thousand titles to fit the latter format. Does the current version of Suse allow the use of spaces between the words or is the 'no open space' convention still required?

OpenSUSE Network :: How To Avoid Typing Route Add Default GW

Jan 14, 2010

In the routing section I do have my default gw coming up there, with the the right nw i/f (eth0) associate with it. However, when I boot up, y config seems to ignore that fact, and I have to keep goign to root and typing "route add default gw <mygwip>" each time, which is something I want to avoid. Isn't it odd that the route settings created by yast have no effect? If they did, the route would be set up on bootup and I would haven't to do that typing.

I have not tried removing and reinstalling emacs so I am not sure if that will work but since the problem has occurred in more than one application now, I assume it points to a larger issue. I have done some research on bus errors but it isn't clear why this problem would manifest in different applications in this manner. After the a failed launch the dmesg reports this, which seems relevant:
