OpenSUSE Network :: Connect 11 Machine To The Internet?
Feb 24, 2010
So here is what I am trying to do. I want to connect my Open Suse 11 machine to the internet. I am almost there.
1. I configured my network card and eth0 is up.
2. I configured my DSL with user name and password and I am authenticated.
3. An IP address is assigned to me and the DNS servers are retrieved.
However I cannot ping or visit any website I use the YAST automatic configuration and kinternet to connect. Here are the gritty details
I do see that kinternet has trouble reading /etc/resolv.conf. It says 'permission denied' although read permissions are set on both /sbin/route and the path that it links to. This should not matter however since the existing entries are already there and valid. I also tried to turn off the firewall suspecting it could be a problem.
So I am being authenticated successfully ( verified with the logs ); assigned an IP; the route seems ok; firewall seems ok. But I cannot browse or do internet things I have been tweaking settings for 3 days now and all seems in vain. Do enlighten me on what I am doing wrong. I bet its something silly that I overlooked. I have had success configuring the same thing in red hat linux and browsing the internet without trouble. Is there something OpenSuse specific that I am missing ?
I installed OpenSuSE 11.3. The only "extra" package I put in after the install was VirtualBox-ose. The firewall is disabled. I gave the machine a static IP address. I can get to the Internet from the machine. I enabled sshd to start on boot with "chkconfig sshd on" and also verified the service is running on the machine. I can ssh user@localhost from the machine as well.
When I try to connect to SSH from another machine, I get a connection refused. I verify that the firewall is down. I also try to get to VNC -- same problem: Connection refused. I ping the machine for fun. If I try to SSH again, it sometimes gives me a logon? I would check the server logs for the connection refused, but I wouldn't know where to look. I started in /var/log/messages, but nothing seemed to jump out there. I also find it strange because I can RDP to a windows guest running under VirtualBox. The Windows guest uses Bridged Network and DHCP.
I also find it interesting that I sometimes type a "ping google.com" from the 11.3 box and it will just hang - no output. Then I open firefox and get to the internet. All of a sudden, ping starts to give output. Could this be a neetwork card issue? A configuration issue? I don't know where to start.
regarding a remote connection from my workplace to my home system. On my home a have a connection to the ISP and the provider is allocating a dynamic IP to my router. How can I connect from my work computer to the home computer? There are other application or other stuff for making this possible?
I have created a small network using Win7 (not a home network, it's a workplace network), but cannot see the Win7 machine from my Linux box (openSUSE 11.3 32 bit). I am getting the error message "Empfangen der Speicherliste vom Server ist gescheitert" ("couldn't receive storage list from server" or so), wenn I try to connect via "Locations -> Server -> Windows Network -> 184.108.40.206 (which is the Win7 machines local IP address).
Disabling the firewall doesn't help.
My setup is a DSL router to which all my computers are connected.
Despite searching the inet for hours I couldn't find a solution.
Another problem is that from the Win7 machine I can only access the public folders on the Linux machine using the root login (not the user I used to make the folders public).
I installed Suse 11.2 on clean HD. I cannot connect to the internet. Seems like Suse didn't install drivers for on board ethernet card. It is a Marvell Yukon 88E8056. I'm new to this and don't know how to install the drivers.
the thing is that I cant use Network Manager to connect to Internet, because it simply do not connect. The connection, although, awailable throught yast when i choose "traditional method with ifup", so everything is just fine, but if i need to reconnect, i have to reboot. How do I setup a !working! connection through Network Manager, or maybe i do not do something properly.
I installed 11.2 on an older HP Laptop which was running XP without any issues. Durring the install, the update processe failed (presumably unble to connect to respository). I am usind a wired connection and the nic is connecting to my router and is recieving an address via DHCP. I am also able to ping the workstion from the router's Web interface. However I am unbale to connect to the internet.I have turned off the Suse firewall via Yast and checked the settings against another computer running ver 11.1 .Everything appears to be correct but no joy.
since installing opensuse 11.2 KDE, is that I can connect to the local resources when I'm not connected via the pptp vpn to the Internet but as soon as I establish an Internet connection, I cannot. Under Windows and other distros I've tried, this has never been an issue, usually I can connect to either local or Internet resources, interchangeably. In a nutshell, I don't know how to troubleshoot this.
I just finished a brand new install of 11.2 on a workstation and it can't connect to the internet at all. I can ping Google and I can ping devices on my local network but I can't browse any web pages. I am able to ping the workstation with my windows 7 workstation. I tried disabling the firewall. I have it set to use DHCP.
I can connect to google via IP. So it appears to be a DNS type issue, is there some settings I am missing?
installed openSUSE 11.3 and round that both wireless and ethernet connections could connect ok to my router but couldnt access the internet. I think its a bug because I didn't have this issue in previous versions of openSUSE.
The solution is to go into the ip settings in the wireless configuration, select the option to manually assign ddresses (not DCHP) and
- enter the ip address of your router in the default gateway and DNS server addresses
- manually assign an ip address to your computer rather than have the router do it
- it has to be in the same range as your router -n normally 192.168.1.x where x can be any number not already used.
I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3, and now I can't seem to get my network/internet connection working. I am using a router and a cable modem, and the connection is of course DSL. I am using wpa2 for security. I can't even FIND where to enter my wpa2 key. When I upgraded from 10.x to 11.2, there was no such problem.
I don't know whats happened but yesterday when i logged in i was unable to load any web pages. Today login and the same.ifconfig shows connection, I can ping whoever i want just can't get any web pages to load, can't even login to my Thomson router. Have tried with firefox, google chrome and konquerer
I have an Intel Mac that I recently added openSUSE 11.3 to to have a dual-boot system. This has been working fine for me for the last 5-6 months. Then on 1/18/2011 I shutdown my system and totally disconnected everything and moved it all out of my office, so new carpeting could be installed. After it was installed, I reconnected everything and confirmed that everything on my Mac side works just fine. Then I rebooted into Linux and everything worked until I tried to run Firefox to connect to the internet. I'm told every time that it could not connect to the server for whatever I tried to connect to. I AM NEW TO LINUX AND ANY KIND OF NETWORK/INTERNET PROBLEMS, SINCE I'M USED TO MAC WHERE EVERYTHING JUST WORKS. But, I did click on "computer" in the lower left-hand side of the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. This shows on the right-hand side under STATUS "Network: none" and then it states to click this to get it started or connected (I don't remember which) so I click it. This brought up a window asking me for my password and then a new window where it went through a checklist of things and presented me my network settings, which means nothing to me. However, after this I tried Firefox again with not luck.
I have an ubuntu kk laptop connected via wireless to my mixed network (xp, win7, other ubuntu), but i can not ping said machine or connect via ssh. Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).
I configure my server just like on the link found in novell i hope some can help me here. my client is able to recieve DHCP address and everything is working fine on the network how ever my client cannot pullup any website, but my server is able to pullup whats wrong on this one.

I use openSuse 11.xx and all was going fine until yesterday. When booting up now, I can't connect to the internet any more. I takes much longer to boot now as if openSuse tries to look for something that disappeared or got corrupt. All started with the latest safety update.
I tried to connect to the huawei cdma EC325 modem. using the network manager applet. System asked which tpe of connection i selected cdma and gave the username and password for the account and the password for my opensuse account.Still i cannot connect to the internet using huawei ec325 modem. How to rectify the problem What shall i do next.
i've just installed opensuse 11.2 everything is working fine but i'm unable to connect to the internet through my adsl modem the network is shown to be active but after i configure the dsl connection i can't see any option from where to connect
Recently i started going into OSes other than Windows. So, i installed openSUSE 11.3 32bit on my system in dual boot with Windows7 32bit. Everything was okay But i couldn't find any drivers for my laptop. My problems are :
1. cannot access NTFS drives. 2. cannot connect to the internet through LAN 3. cannot connect to the internet through Wireless.
Computer's Configuration : Dell Inspiron 14r Intel Corei3 processor Both the operating systems run fine otherwise
I can not get NetworkManager to handle my Huawei E220 usb modem. I have searched forums and tried a lot of things. I have just upgraded from openSUSE 11.2 to openSUSE 11.3 using zypper. It seems to work fine except that umtsmon stopped to work, so for now my laptop has no connetion to internet at all. Here are some information about my settings:
I have used usb_modeswitch to make the device a modem. Am I right if I say that usb_modeswitch is a one time command, or does it swap the setting each time it is called? Anyhow lsusb states that the device is a modem. (All the time.) code...
