Debian Configuration :: Cannot SSH Tunnel Anymore

Oct 25, 2015

Unfortunately I have followed a misleading guide to set ssh and scp in order not to supply password everytime and...I messed up my ssh/scp settings as it does not work anymore.Well, in my attempt:

I moved to
Code: Select allcd ~/.ssh
then I created a rsa key
Code: Select allssh-keygen -t rsa

without giving any passphrase.Then

Code: Select allcat id_rsa.pub >> authorized_keys
chmod 600 authorized_keys

Then I tried tunnelling and...it didn't work. So, ok, I tried to recover previous settings erasing all the items in the folder ~/ .ssh/. After I tried copying a file with the "usual" command that used to work before (i.e. scp file user-id@server) and...I've found out it does not work anymore!

I get this error message:
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host

Debian Configuration :: Bad Bandwidth Management Behind SSH Tunnel

Mar 2, 2016

We have an Apache Subversion (http) server for hosting our codes, and, for the 3 next month, we are behind a DSL connection (max upload 100 kB/s).

When a remote co-worker try to download a new fresh copy of our projects on his computer directly over http, the transfer goes fine : with a bandwidth monitor (gnome-system-monitor or bwm-ng) we can see that the server is trying to send ~95kB/s and the connection remains usable for others task in parallel (just a bit slower, which is normal).

But : when the remote co-worker is connected through SSH to this server, and uses tunneling to communicate with Apache Subversion, the server is sending more than 200kB/s : the connection is not usable for other tasks during the transfer as with ~102kB/s actually transferred through the DSL Line, it's completely congested and more than fifty percents of the packets are lost.

I think that I understand why : TCP/IP auto-detects the max amount of successfully transmitted bytes per second, and try not send more than this maximum value.

When the Apache server is connected to the local instance of openssh-server through localhost, packets are transmitted successfully between them. Only after, openssh-server try to send it to the client (and should retry if it's not successfull) but during that time, Apache is already giving the next one... giving this saturation effect (Apache is not aware of the saturation, or at least, not enough)

Debian Configuration :: Tunnel All Traffic Through PPTP VPN

Dec 12, 2010

I installed the PPTP Client [URL] and can successfully connect to my VPN (creates interface ppp0). The problem is, I'm trying to tunnel all of my traffic on my system through the connection. I've seen conflicting howtos and scripts including pptpclient's documentation (the ip-up and ip-down scripts don't work). How does one simply (even if I type it manually) tunnel the traffic?

Debian Configuration :: How To Show Active Ssh Tunnel Connections

Apr 23, 2011

My Debian server is used by people to set up ssh-tunnels for use as a local proxy ( on their remote machines).Since only the tunnel is setup, and no shell is used, I can't use "who" to see which users have an active ssh-tunnel on my server, but I would like to have an idea about who is active etc. I think I should be able to determine this from the auth.log file, but then I would have to use some script to determine what connection is still active. Is there an easy way to see what users have active ssh-tunnels on my Debian server at any given moment?

Debian :: Modify Configuration To Enable OpenVPN To Act As Tunnel Broker

Feb 18, 2011

I currently run openVPN on my Debian box that provides secure ipv4 routing from my laptop to my VPS in a different country (and from there the internet via this box). This works fine. However, id like to sort out ipv6 through this VPN as well as IPV4 and not overly sure how to do it. The remote server itself has native ipv6 configured on device eth0 and it works (ping6, traceroutes all fine, incoming to web servers etc) nicely on dual stack.

How would i go about modifying the config (both client and server if needed) to enable openVPN to act as a tunnel broker to enable the laptop to use the ipv6 through the server as well as the old v4? (the internet connection laptop end will not/does not have native ipv6 from the ISP. Currently im using he-net tunnel broker but id like to run myself through my existing openVPN). VPN config details: Its using UDP, port 1194, creates a TUN interface, redirect-gateway etc and the rest is normal config. Edit:- if it matters the clients are all running windows so i cant use sh scripts to set up stuff client end.

Ubuntu Networking :: Playing With IPv6 Should Be Able To Do So Using '6to4'?

May 7, 2011

Anyone who's interested in playing with IPv6 should be able to do so using '6to4' - even if you're behind a NAT device! The following steps works for me on Ubuntu 11.04 (taken[URL].. 1. Make sure the 'iproute' package is installed:

Security :: SSH Tunnel Not Accessible From Different Machine On Same Network

Dec 16, 2010

I have an SSH tunnel setup between a local server and a remote postfix relay VPS. This is so we can route all our outgoing mail through this SSH tunnel to a private relay VPS, this seems to give us much more consistent mail delivery than using our ISP's relay. So the SSH tunnel is set to route port 1025 on machine A to port 25 on the VPS This part of it is working perfectly and has been for months. However today I wanted to set our e-mail newsletter software (on the same network as the SSH tunnel start-point) to send through the SSH tunnel. So I punched in the IP/port... 192.168.1.5:1025 but it doesn't work. Is there something I need to do to allow connections from other machines on the LAN to access the start-point of the SSH tunnel? Or are SSH tunnels restricted to localhost connections only?

Networking :: Ipv6 Connectivity Using 6to4?

Jan 14, 2011

The goal: ipv6 connectivity using 6to4 The problem: no connectivity on some internal hosts (mixed win & debian) and no ipv6-web access on any host. Let's start with my external box. It is headless debian lenny dhcp/local-dns & cache/firewall. It has the following interfaces after a reboot:

[Code]...

My understanding is that ipv6 will auto-configure itself and that the radvd file is all that is needed by the external host to give all the ipv6 enabled internal hosts ipv6 web access. My question: How is my external host misconfigured? Or are the problems specific to the internal hosts? I am assuming that I have issues on both the external and internal hosts since some of the internals have golobal ipv6 address and some don't. I do however wish to address the external host first.

OpenSUSE Network :: Offline Rpm Configuration Using Windows?

Jan 6, 2010

Look I have just installed suse 11.2 KDE at 32 bit. Now I need to get all the drivers and codecs to work properly. So I can download using yast and a bunch of repository urls. If Im wrong please correct me. My internet connection is one of those 3g HSDPA connections so I usually connect a usb modem to my computer (Huawei e220). I've googled around and from my understanding, I need to download an application called kinternet. However kinternet has naturally got dependencies and those dependencies also have dependencies and so on... I'm assuming this tree is pretty massive given the fact that I installed via live CD, the question thatbeckons is how do I download kinternet along with all known dependencies...wait for it.... in WINDOWS??? is it possible or do I have to hunt down every single dependency?? the idea is to get these rpms install them manually on my PC in order to get my modem working on the freshly installed system and perform any future updating using yast on that system with my 3g modem.

OpenSUSE Network :: Wireless AP Configuration - Doesn't Have Internet Access

Aug 7, 2011

I'm trying to setup a wireless AP with my old asus eeepc, so it can act as a repeater to connect my android device on the other end of the apartment. I've already created the Wireless Access Point using hostapd. It took very little configuring, just changed from mode 'a' to 'g' and changed the channel from 60 to 1 and It was all set. Next I setup a dhcp server. Also simple enough using yast.

Up to this point, I was able to connect my android device to the newly created wireless network. However It doesn't have internet access. I guess I have to configure iptables for this, but I find it incredibly confusing! Here are a few specs to help with any examples: The laptop is connected to the internet through eth0 with IP 192.168.2.120 Hostapd is using wlan0, and I'm pretty sure it created mon.wlan0 So, to sum up, when I connect my android device to the network I can, for instance, see what ever pages apache is currently serving on the laptop, but can't access the internet.

When I connect with my laptop using DHCP it gets an IP address just fine. However I can't access the Internet. I think my problem is in the Kernel IP Routing Table. Here is the output from /sbin/route -n

dsl0 obtains IP from ISP eth0 is set to DHCP although that confuses me because how can the same NIC have two IP Addresses? eth1 static IP 10.30.60.1

Debian Configuration :: Network Not Work When Use 2 Network Cards

Oct 24, 2010

I'm planning to use Debian as the OS for a firewall machine, which will sit between my internet connection and the rest of my computers. Now my network is all wired, no wireless whatsoever. I'm using the onboard the motherboards cat5 socket which seems to be using the VIA rhine driver and I'm also using a 3com 100MBps card.

I can list the machine spec if you want but it's nothing special, an old Athlon 64 rig with 1gb ram and an OEM motherboard, it all seems to work ok apart from the internet doesn't' seem to work. Lenny seems to detect both cards ok and I even used the net install CD and it managed to download everything using the 3com card.

The strange thing is when I'm in Lenny, I can't seem to connect. I can ping google, but when I try and view a webpage, the browser just sits there with a while screen... Could it be that using 2 network cards is confusing Debian? Right now I've only got the modem hooked up the the 3com card, and nothing connected to the onboard network card.
