OpenSUSE Network :: Server Rejects Client Requests?
Dec 27, 2010
Background:I have a small PC104 running opensuse 11.1. I'm writing a small client/server application for debugging purposes using mono and WCF. All the client does is make a request for information every 100ms.Problem:After about 20 requests the server quits responding to the client. Even if the client is running on the same machine. I've run the exact code on another laptop running opensuse as well as a laptop running windows and everything works great. Hopefully that closes the option that it is a code, mono, or opensuse flaw.Is there a kernel option or a network option that anyone knows about that might cause this sort of behavior?

So a while back I decided I wanted to get to know Linux a little bit and I figured the most immediately useful thing for me would be a small home server. About this time I discovered plug computers and I eventually bought myself a Guruplug for this purpose - a small, cheap, power-efficient ARM architecture thing running Debian 5.0.6. Since then I've kind of ambled along with the project as and when time permitted (installing, tweaking, scouring manpages and tutorials is fun, but takes a lot of time), and have now finally got a nice big external harddrive formatted as ext3 and hooked up to it. The time seemed right to go for the samba install. I installed from the Debian repository, configured using SWAT and immediately hit problems.
Since the only user is me and the only access to the computer is over SSH, I have few accounts - there's root which I've disabled from access altogether, there's my sudoer account magnus, and there's my new test account magnus-smb. This one is a standard user, and has identical Unix password and samba password (added with smbpasswd). I intend to keep this up with a separate samba-access account - I'm a little paranoid about allowing any kind of access to sudoer accounts and won't even let SSHD accept password based logins.
Setting up samba, I basically tried to make it do as little as I needed to get a local file server going. The only share is homes, and its path goes to my external drive. The drive itself is mounted as rw,noexec,user from fstab.
Now, with all of that set up I'd hoped I'd be able to mount my homes shares and go. This proved not to be the case - if I set encrypted passwords = yes, my Windows 7 clients behave differently. The magnus account connects but can't authenticate - all passwords are rejected. The magnus-smb account is apparently accepted but then receives a "network path not found" error. If I set it to no, both accounts are prevented from even attempting to authenticate, and I get an error message about "this account is not approved for logging on from this station" (translation from Norwegian). I've been searching around but not finding much. I did find one article claiming this was easier after samba 3.3 and discovered that my manpages said samba 3.2. Yesterday I therefore decided to reinstall samba from source, only to find that the current stable release (3.5) also claims to be version 3.2 in it's manpages, so I probably might as well not have bothered. Oh well, at least I've installed something from source now.
My smb.conf:
Code:
# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from UNKNOWN (Q@)
# Date: 2010/12/08 12:59:41

I have an opensuse 11.3 install which I want to set up as a network boot server to install Solaris 10 on a Sun Ultra 10 client. According to what I've read, this requires rarpd and tftpd which I've set up on opensuse, but also bootparamd which I can't find for 11.3. It seems it was last included with opensuse 9.2. Does anyone know if it's available, if I could use the suse 9.2 version, or any alternative?

until 2 weeks ago I had o.S11.3 on both my Siemens and Asus laptops. I have installed NX No Machine. ( I know it's not open source,I am using the free version). With commandline ( root) /usr/NX/bin/nxclient I was able to connect to the other machines. I got Qt: Locales not supported on X server, the NX menu popped up and I was able to connect by inserting resp codes. After fresh install of o.S.11.4 on the ASUS the commandline (root) answers:
xlib: connection to":0.0" refused by server
xlib: No protocol specified
nxclient: cannot connect to X server:0.0
The ASUS can still be reached from the other machines (one with o.S.11.3,the third one with o.S.11.2 ) SSH ( Lan)connections are all working forth and back between the machines, even to and from Win XP, however only from Win 7 on the ASUS, but that's a Win7problem. Comparing the installed xorg-x11- server-extra : on o.S. 11.3 Additional X servers ( Xmdx,Xephir,Xnest,Xvfb ) ,on o.S.11.4 the Xvfb is missing, might that be the reason?

So a while back I was able to mount a directory from my OpenSuse server as a NFS on an Esxi server. After restarting the Esxi server, the NFS became inactive and I was unable to remount it. The error given was that the Esxi client was unable to connect to the Suse server. I was looking into the showmount -a command on the Suse server and it showed the mount point on the Esxi server. Could this be causing the Suse server to reject new attempts to mount the directory? What else can I try to fix this problem? Also I should note that both servers can ping each other.

I setup an ssh server that works fine when using the terminal, but trying to run programs like firefox fails. It will open partially and then simply hang. Less complicated programs can open successfully and run fine, but cause my remote computer to pause every 5 seconds for about a second.

I have a 11.1 NFS server and several 11.1 NFS clients. If for some reason the server shuts down before the clients then the clients become almost frozen, particularly KDE is rendered useless even after cycling back to init 3 then init 5. I would like to make the clients immune to shutdowns on the server.

I have installed a working DNS server on my home network. I have an unique server, devoted to dns, gateway, storage which runs opensuse 11.0 (I known that it is rather old). Two new clients require DHCP. I have installed, using yast, a very simple DHCP server, according to the following config:
option domain-name "XXX.XXX";
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1;
option routers 192.168.0.1;
[code]...
(I have tried to add "ddns-update-style none", and to remove the ntp-servers option, since my server is not a time server, without success). Unfortunately, even if the client (a mac running OSX 10.4) receives a right IP and gateway address, it displays neither dns server address nor default domain name. The same mac, on my office network (not managed by me), receives everything.

I have x11 forwarding enabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_config on a suse 11.2 32 bit box running kde I can open x apps on a windows machine using xming and putty just fine, but when I boot the same machine into suse 11.2 64 bit using kde and try using konsole I get: cannot connect to x server
The command I'm using to log in is: ssh -X -l username host I doubt the problem is with the server I'm logging into or it wouldn't work in windows, not really sure what to look for as I've never had a problem using x11 forwarding from a linux client before only windows ones

i want to disable all DHCP request, can i turn off the client that if a MAC address changes a dhcp request is not automatically made?reason for this: I have HP blade running with an Intel NC260M mezzanine card running with virtual connect. I have experienced problems with firmware levels with this card where the virtual connect mac address is ignored and the real MAC displayed. As we are using bonds on the servers and have 6 NICs installed we have to tie down the MAC address to a bond. A blade was replaced today without the firmware update and the real MAC appeared, a dhcp request was made and my-eth[2-3] and resolv.conf files were over-written by the dhcp supplied

Ok I am new to all this, I did have a server years ago but have forgotten most of what I learned. My problem is getting ftp to connect to the server. I have centos and it has proftpd but I'm lost when it comes to the conf file. I created a user in plesk but when I try to connect with any ftp software it accepts the username but rejects any password. I have tried a million combinations but I just can't get my head around this. I have used it before many years ago and managed ok but that was using webmin. I feel I've bitten off more than I can chew with this server although I have managed everything else

I'm trying to set up an openSUSE 11.2 host as NIS client and I would like to knowwhether or not it can be client of two (or more) NIS domains. The reason is thatsome users are authenticated on server1 (nis-domain1) and some others on server2(nis-domain2).Trawling the web, I found a HP document stating that a client can belong to one NIS domain only. However, the yast NIS client interface allows adding NIS domains/servers to the seemingly default one. I'm totally confused.I made the following experiment:1. declaring nis-domain1 in /etc/defaultdomain and server1 in /etc/yp.conf: ypwhich returns server1, ypcat passwd lists the users on server1.2. in the yast interface, I added nis-domain2 and server2; in /etc/yp.conf, there is an extra line "domain nis-domain2 server server2". After reboot, ypwhichreturns server2, ypcat passwd lists the users on server2. But now the maps from server1 are no longer available.

I have an obstacle to login remotely to my server. When I used DHCP internet connection, I simply worked with the ssh (scp) commands without any problem. Now, however, I need to use the VPN client to access to internet. After I log on by VPN, I can use the Firefox browser, but the ssh (scp) commands do not work at all from the command prompt. It looks that ssh does not go through the VPN client. I have tried putty.exe with wine, but that also does not work.

I'm looking for information on how to use a single FTP command from the terminal window, that would do this:
- Login (with usesrname/password)
- Set Transfer type to Binary
- Get all files in a directory and download somewhere.
- Delete all files in the directory that was just downloaded.
- Close Connection when complete.
There lots of information on individual commands, but I want to combine them into one single command that requires no human interaction. Just one big line Hopefully from this one command line I'll be able to create more for other purposes (like login and delete one file then close).

We would like to use Kiwi LTSP to boot some old PCs straight in to a Windows terminal session. We have this working with RDesktop, but we would like to load balance the connections to our Citrix servers, which I don't believe you can do with RDesktop as it points to a single Windows server.
Is there a way to get LTSP to connect to published ICA applications on boot in a similar way to specifying screen07=rdesktop in lts.conf?

I have a crawler on my VPS VMWare Server (also tried it on my dedicated server). After many requests about 200.000/6h my network is gone. I use lynx to get any website outside of local network and any site is not responding - also tried to obtain IP address instead of host name - no results. I can get every local site. For example when I am on 190.24.2.1 I can obtain a page which is placed on 190.24.2.5 but obtaining 191.54.23.34 is not possible.I tried many things such as changing TCP timeouts to less, restarting virtual machine and no results. After few hours - 4-5 hours I get network working. It is not working as fast as it should but it is ok.
I am wondering where is the problem. Have I got to configure linux? Am I missing something? Maybe some router stack is blocking my ip? (Other crawlers put on same VPS are working properly, but after 6 hours they also crashes)I also notices that I can get like 30.000 web sites per hour (some with errors, some with no response, some with timeout surely) but this number decreases hour by hour and finally reaches zero.Can you help me and suggest where may ba a problem?My system: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server, 1GHz, 512 MB RAM, 5 MB/s.
