OpenSUSE Network :: 11.4: Strange Nfs V4 - Invisible Files?

Mar 11, 2011

Yesterday I installed 11.4. First it did run very nice but now I am facing an odd problem: I am mounting on my new 11.4 box a folder via nfsv4 from an opensuse 11.2 server (updated to kernel

I got some folders where the 11.4 cannot see files which are defenitely present on the server. They are completely invisible to the client! In one particular case I have eg. 108 files in the folder on the server, but the 11.4 box only sees 107. One is missing. It does not show up using ls and I also can't access it blindly using eg. cat. The file does not differ from all the others in that folder regarding permissions/ownership/acls etc. It is also not big (1728 bytes) nor is it a special file (link/socket etc.just a plain C header file). That single file is just not visible when mounting with nfsv4 on the 11.4 box. When mounting it with nfs3 instead the file is visible. But for obvious reasons I want to stick with nfsv4.

I restarted all nfs related daemons on both the server and the client a couple of times but it does not make any difference. I also cannot find any problems in any log files on the server or client up to now. I rebooted the client but not the server (I can't do that right now as it is in heavy production).

I do not see these problems with other opensuse boxes running 11.0/11.2 or 11.3 in my network. They can see/access these files quite nicely. This is really strange. Does any have a clue what is going on here or how I can narrow that problem down?

Fedora :: Chmod 666 Makes Files And Folders Invisible?

Mar 31, 2010

I have a separate data partition on my F12 box with one dir for my children and subdirs for each of them. because they had no rw- rights and because they sometimes use one of the other logins to work for school I changed the permissions for their dir so that anyone has access. I used

# chmod -R 666 [their directory]

after that Nautilus displayed an empty folder even with 'show hidden files' on.however, with

ls -lh

on the dir and subdirs all the files seem to be present (luckily).

1. what did I wrong?

2. how do I get the files back using Nautilus?

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 LTS - Mysql Fills Up / With Invisible Files?

Jul 23, 2010

I'm having the oddest problem. I use Ubuntu 10 LTS on 3 Amazon EC2 "large" instances, for Drupal hosting. All three servers are seeing the same issue, where root gradually fills up with files that I cannot see by any means. ls -a , du , nothing seems to see these files except for df. And when the drive gets full (after about a week), the server behaves as if the disk is full... so I believe that df is correct here. The moment I restart mysql, all that invisible data disappears, and everything is fine again.

The MySQL datadir is on a separate device (600GB EBS mounted at /ebs ), so it's definitely not MySQL data. And /tmp doesn't have anything visible going on; certainly not something that would take up 9gb.

I suspect that something is causing the kernel to not release file handlers correctly. For all I know this could be happening with all programs, but MySQL is the only thing running that would use enough temp space to be noticed. Each server has some applications that happen on it uniquely, but since it's happening on all of them I figure it's the common elements that count. The servers are a clean install, running Apache2 (PHP 5.3), MySQL, and SSHD. All three servers were installed from the official AMI.

Ubuntu Networking :: Created Wireless Network Invisible

Aug 14, 2010

I go up to the panel and click on the wifi manager, create a new network and name it "loganspc" with no authentication since previously created networks didnt work with those settings. Now before, I used this in conjunction with my eth0 connection so i could give my ipod internet. then i got a wireless router to do that. its exhibiting the exact same problem. Both the router and my laptop's network are invisible. I create it and then i cant connect to it with my ipod. I do a wifi scan (with an app, its jailbroken) and it doesnt find it still. nor does it find the routers network.

Ubuntu :: Make Certain Files/folders Invisible To Specific Users?

Jan 7, 2011

I've got a NAS running and I'd like to somehow make some of the folders and files invisible to certain users only. For example, if I 'ls' a directory, I want to see files 'a', 'b', and 'c'. But if another user does 'ls' in the same directory, I only want them to be able to see 'a' listed.I know I can use 'chmod +700' to make certain files not able to be read/written, but the filename would still appear in a 'ls'.I know I can put certain files inside of a '.hidden' file in the folder, but then it would be hiEdit : I'd also like to mention that the users that connect to the NAS could be coming from Windows or Mac operating systems. So hopefully the solution would work for users from those systems also..

Networking :: Can Ping But Can't Wget / Strange Network Behavior

Apr 28, 2011

I have a small ARM machine running an Arch linux variant, PlugApps. It was set up and working fine at my home, with a standard networking setup -- cable modem and router. I could do pretty much anything I needed to access the net fine. This machine is a remote monitoring system for another location. I shipped it to that location and am now trying to get it set up using another set of hands on site. There it is on the network behind a dsl modem and a router. I forwarded ports from the dsl modem to the router and from the router to the ARM computer.

In both cases the ARM machine is/was configured to use dhcp.So here's the deal:I can ssh into the ARM machine just fine.I can ping hosts on the wan fine (eg: fails for not being able to resolve a valid address (eg: PlugApps package management system (pacman) cannot resolve the repository address the openntp time sync isn't working On the new network, I am able to connect to another client windows PC which has the same associated network info (Bcast address, Mask, etc. - comparing windows "ipconfig" vs linux "ifconfig" outputs) but which can resolve addresses for web browsing, etc. What am I missing? If it can resolve addresses for pings, why can't it work for other address requests? If I can ssh interact with it, why can't it connect to the net for other purposes?

Software :: Recoll Indexing Throwing Strange Errors On Some Files

Nov 15, 2010

I have installed Recoll 1.13.01 on my Ubuntu 10.04 box. I selected certain file directory trees to index and when I build the index using the gui it seems to work fine based on my limited testing. So far, so good.I planned to add a step to my nightly cleanup, backup and other housekeeping script to update the Recoll index. The command in question is recollindex While testing the command line indexing I found that an OLD password protected Windows zip file caused it to throw a bunch of errors. It appeared to continue. I located the offending file and as it was already backed up to DVD media and deleted it. I have also found a couple of other offending files which make me wonder about the robustness of this application.

The next case I had a file Session 12a.odt which for some reason was of 0 bytes - don't know why - perhaps I was just starting to write this document and never put anything in it.

It's like it starts up the app but just doesn't render the window. It started to do this with the terminal but now it's doing it with other apps like Totem. I am running GNOME 2.32.1

Ubuntu Security :: Finding Two Strange-looking Files On Windows Shared Folders?

Mar 30, 2011

Recently I've been finding two strange-looking files on my Windows shared folders! Their names are 'khy' and 'qffhtx.exe', they appear as hidden, and they're hard to delete!! especially the first one because it has no extension. I use Ubuntu 10.10, but I am worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP. Today I tried to open the .exe file in nautilus to see what is inside and I received the message "Unable to open archive", 'khy' is apparently an empty text file. Then I unmounted my /home partition so my files are out of the way, and I ran the .exe file using WINE,

Now I have a strange-looking applet on my top panel!! and it says "Script paused", also it says "Exit', and also Wine command prompt says something strange about "LockWindowUpdate", don't imagine it I'll post the screenshots so you can see it for yourselves. Also --and this is weird-- the virus apparently is trying to call a Windows process named csrcs.exe!! Again, I'll post the screenshots.

If this is a virus, then it's like a fish out of the water on my Ubuntu, it's probably trying to do something but it can't find its way around, it's kinda funny, but Im worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP, I'm having a hard time trying to remember the name KHY, it's a very weird acronym, it's the acronym of a disease, according to what I googled, i'm sure it's a virus!!! Anyway it's HARD to remember!!!

what can I do about this? How can I see the "script"? can Ubuntu kick its ***?how can I clean my Windows?

OpenSUSE Install :: Strange Behaviours After Every Reboot?

May 11, 2011

I hope I open the thread in the correct section.I have just installed OpenSuse 11.4 with XFCE environment on my Acer Aspire 5738Z.Everytime I boot, I experience the following "strange" behaviours:1 - I need to reconfigure manually the "capture device" with Alsamixer to change it from "micro" to "internal micro". Even though I restore a taylored asound file with alsactl, as I used to do when I used Ubuntu, every time I restart my computer, the capture is on "micro" again.2 - In the panel, I need to remove the Thunderbird launcher. I remove it everytime I log in on Suse, but it comes back after every reboot.3 - Skype and Pidgin start automatically, even though they no longer are in my list of apps to start automatically after log in. (They once were, but then two instances of each tried to start at the same time).Besides, I have another problem with the action button, the one that enables to shut down, restart, hibernate, etc. When I click on it, I will immediately be logged off.

OpenSUSE Network :: Move Files After N Days?

Sep 24, 2010

I have a script that moves files after 60 days from the FTP folder over to a trash folder which is not accessible by the FTP. From there I can delete the files whenever the drive get's full. That works fine so far.
The only thing that bothers me is that files moved to ".Trash" are not in any folder structure anymore (one big directory with the deleted files in it).

When I do a "ls -la" on the array {} I see the file names including the folders. I'm not sure if the find command or the mv command forgets about the directories.

This is the script: bash -c 'date;find /Volumes/data1/test/ -mtime +60 -type f -exec mv {} /Volumes/data1/.Trash/ ;;date' >> ~/mylog

OpenSUSE Network :: Apache2 Not Processing Php Files

May 6, 2011

I'm running apache2 and I installed php5 with yast. httpd2 -M states that php5 is loaded. /etc/apache2/conf.d/php5.conf is being included in httpd.conf and it contains:

<IfModule mod_php5.c>
AddHandler application/x-php .php
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .php4
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .php5

The first line was added by me since that's what mime.types actually contains.

php.ini is in /etc/php5/apache2 and since I was not sure apache/php was finding it I added a PHPIniDir "directive" into httpd.conf. I have not changed it.

Test file is the typical /srv/www/htdocs/info.php with <?php infophp(); ?>

Normal index.htm is working fine. php -a is working fine.

I spent a long afternoon around this configuration and I looked in plenty of pages for solutions. I only do occasional system administration so I might have easily overlooked something trivial, but I run out of ideas.

There is a thread in this web site with a similar problem but no solution:

Php5 not recognized in SUSE 10.2 Apache2

What could be missing/wrong if php5 is loaded and the addhandler is defined? How can I further test?

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Strange WiFi Behavior Breaks Connection Repeatedly

May 30, 2011

I have recently upgraded to 11.4 and also had to renew an AP (HP ProCurve 10ag). This was several years old but replaced an identical model which had been working well until recently. I thought it would be appropriate to flash newer firmware as the device four releases behind the times. The access point serves partner's XP laptop and my openSUSE 11.4 laptop and after flashing the firmware both machines would make a connection and then break and remake, to the extent that the openSUSE machine became unusable. I thought it was an encryption problem and spent hours changing the AP and Client setups to no avail

After reading a thread here I checked out dmesg and this is what I found:-
