I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit, downloaded Adobe reader '.bin', from the terminal
It extracted and asked me for a installation location, to which i put [~]
It then finished the installation.
But when i click on the icon in the start menu or on desktop it fails to start, when i also click on a .pdf document it also fails to start!
this morning I got a bad surprise: Firefox doesn't start upon my click on its icon.
Tried to uninstall and reinstall Firefox.... Even its icon disappeared from menus after reinstallation (no way to see it in the menu editor). I tried to start it from command line:

and got this reply from Ubuntu:

I am using Chrome now but I had some useful add-ons on Firefox and wouldn't like to loose them...
I used to be able to open the Rhythmbox window by just clicking the Rhythmbox icon in the notification area. Now in Lucid it brings up a menu (isn't that what right click is for??) and I have to select "Show Rhythmbox", and sometimes I accidentally click on "Quit" and I have to start Rhythmbox again. It's a real PITA. Is there any way to make it the way it was before? I've looked at the Rhythmbox options and can't find anything about it. (Why do GNOME applications always have barely any options?)

Another piece of information that may be relevant: this started happening immediately after I installed a GStreamer plugin, specifically the one for aac, xvid, mpeg2, and faad. I've since uninstalled this package, but Banshee still will not load.
i have the OSS drivers installed for my M-audio Delta 66 card. took a lot of tweaking to get it my sound to work well. installed hydrogen and no sound. read that i need jackd. messed around with that and couldnt get it to work either. no matter what i do i cant get sound.
i am a super duper newbie at linux. usually i can find some writeup about how to make something work but not luck with this issue. thanks so much if you can help out.
a little background on myself and why i am such a newb: I use to download pirated copies of windows and pretty much any software i wanted. kinda thought it was time to stop stealing software when there was so much out there available for free. i am trying really hard to stick with linux. but i have a lot to learn. my friend who is big into linux told me "the linux community needs people like you" i am pretty much the average person, not a big computer nerd, but i am really into the unbuntu philosophy.
Hydrogen, the drum machine for Linux, worked 100% great in Jaunty. I upgraded to Karmic and bam, sound is crackling and laggy.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got sick to DEATH of Adobe AIR and TweetDeck screwing up constantly, and then Adobe announces there will be no more Adobe AIR for Linux. Fine, screw 'em, I'll switch to something else. So I hunt around for the options, most of which suck. Then I discover Choqok is already installed on my machine (11.4). Except the POS doesn't work.
To use it, I have to authenticate with my Twitter account. So I click Add, select Twitter, it pops up the dialog. I leave the alias as Twitter, click the authenticate with Twitter button. The Firefox icon pops up and bounces around - but Firefox is already running. So nothing happens! No Twitter access, no page loaded, nothing. I shut down Firefox, try it again. Same deal. As usual, no one bothered to test this POS software before releasing it. how to get this **** to authenticate to Twitter in the absence of ANY useful documentation for this junk?
I want to experiment with Hydrogen, Rosegarden and other music apps it seems that jack is a useful program to do that. I have a standard install of Lucid. When I start Jack, it gives a message "suspending Pulseaudio The jack apps I am using have no sound. I assume that I need to set up an ALSA device to connect Jackd to? Is that correct?
[Note: I found these instructions for "running Pulseaudio on top of jack" [URL].. but they look more complicated than I need. I'm only using jack a little each day so I am fine with turning off Pulse during those times.]
What is the simplest way to get sound out of Jack apps? If it is to set up an ALSA device, how do I do that without interfering with Pulse which will be running the other 90% of the time? Or am I totally misunderstanding the setup?

I have Ubuntu 10.10 with Realtek AC '97 embedded sound card, the sound work perfect in the machine, actually it works perfect on the program itself but in the exporting, it doesn't work, what should I do to fix this problem?

No problems, but afterwards my sound is completely gone and under hardware when I click the sound option on the speaker icon I get nothing listed under hardware.

i have just put a Geforce 7300 GT graphic card into my machine the problem is the max resolution I can get is 1024x768 at 60 hz the screen is a benq fp71g+. also the screen goes blank when i click on the display icon in system settings. i know that the screen can be run at 1280x1024 so I don?t know where the problem is.

When I click the Firefox icon, normally I can maximize and minimize in the window (either top or bottom panel). This has disappeared and I am not sure why. I had installed [URL... and suddenly after deleting/cleaning it up/restoring panels I cannot see why or how I can easily maximize or minimize any panel, not just Firefox.

With it, I can add a shortcut menu and a Stack icon. From there,I can add applications, but they have a generic *.desktop icon. When I right click on the wireless icon (the four bars, which are empty and have an X by them now). I click information about the connection, and it says "no active valid connection found" (or something like that, it's in spanish).I right clic and clic "edit connections" and it shows me five tabs: cabled, wireless, broad band, vpn, and dsl. The wireless tab is empty, there are no connections.I looked at ubuntu help, and it says to put this in terminal:Quote:sudo lshw -C networkand that it should say either "CLAIMED, UNCLAIMED, ENABLED or DISABLED"but instead it says, really fast,CPUIDPCI (sysfs)(and something else too fast to read)I put in another series of commands to the terminal to give information-- I read these on another post, that they're necessary for someone (you! View 4 Replies View RelatedIn the sound preferences if i set the sound to ALSA sound skips like a scratched CD when i move, maximize, open, close window. If i set the sound to PulseAudio sound skips on everything (vlc ,banshee)except Totem.
On both of these options Banshee is rendered totally unusable. If i set the sound to ESD, than VLC and Banshee work fine though VLC still skips a little bit though less than before. Totem however will no longer be able to play most of the files it could before without extreme unbarable static. Though some files it will still play fine.
HOWEVER with all three of these there is no skipping whatsoever when i play sound on ..... videos in the browser whereas if i play the same video in .flv on a media player the same problems persist.. so the browsers seem unaffected
OSS is by far the best in terms of skipping, none whatsoever. However OSS has a constant steady crackle behind anything that is playing. The crackle is low but still irritating and the crackling makes my ears ring after but i can still listen to music and just try my best to ignore it much like listening to a radio station that barely comes in. So how do i either to stop the static behind OSS... or stop the skipping with ALSA and Pulse, or stop the crackling in ESD or OSS??

I run Ubuntu 10.10, recently I got this problem. if I open more than one program, and click on icon of them on task bar to switch between them, KDE crash and restart with log in screen. now since 2-3 days this restart also happening when I ALT+TAB to switch between running programs .

All switches that could turn the network off is on. Every time I click on the icon in the system tray it tell me the networkmanager is disabled.
