OpenSUSE Install :: Getting The Source For /init Inside The Installer's Initrd?

Mar 21, 2011

In short. I've cracked open the initrd file of the openSuSE installer to have a look - I've determined it's an initramfs which by default would execute ''/init''GREAT! But not so much... init should find the installation files et cetera - but I haven't a clue how it does this because it's a compiled binary So, my question is this - do anyone know where I can find the source for this file ?

If not, who should I contact to find it? I really, really need to look at it.. I'm trying to throw the installer over to a USB harddrive (with multiple other installers, each in their own directory etc. etc.) - the idea is to create a USB HDD with installation mediums for the OS's I use so the recommended methods of dedicating a partition to openSuSE is not going to work...

OpenSUSE Install :: Where To Get 11.1 Kernel And Initrd

Debian :: Building Kernel - Initrd Fail And Nvidia Can't Find Source

Feb 25, 2010

So I'm building a custom kernel cuz I want the fbcondecor patch in my kernel. I use the same .config that 2.6.32 debian kernel package comes with. This kernel runs perfectly. I pass --initrd to make-kpkg when building the package but no initrd is built when I install it so I have to make it using "mkinitramfs -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.33 2.6.33" to get it to boot. Now when I try to build the nvidia drivers it complains it can't find the source. I did build kernel_headers and installed them also the source is in /usr/src/linux. I also tried to specify the path by passing --kernel-source-path= to the nvidia script but no change. What is going on? I've done this fifty times before and never had any problems. Has there been some changes to how debian kernel packages are built? EDIT: Just thought I'd add some info about the steps I took.

tar xjvf linux-2.6.33.tar.bz2
ln -s linux-2.6.33 linux
cd linux
patch -p1 < ../fbcondecor-0.9.6-2.6.33-rc7.patch
cp /boot/config-2.6.32-trunk-686 ./.config

make menuconfig Loaded .config then I removed support for maxtorfb, tile blitting and some sirrusfb thing, nothing thats relevant to my system. Changed cpu from Pentium 4 to Core 2 and added framebuffer decor
support from my patch, exited and saved. Then:

EDIT2: I have now tried to build in the same way with the same strange results, anyone have any thoughts as to what I'm doing wrong just throw it at me, I'm getting desperate and running out of ideas. I've checked all the kernel source symlinks and everything looks good.

Debian :: Make-kpkg --initrd Won't Create Initrd?

May 18, 2010

When I compile a custom kernel with this command: make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers and then install the .deb, there's no initrd in /boot and I have to create it manually. I've thought that the --initrd option should take care about this, but somehow it doesn't.

It behaves like this for about two years at least (since I've compiled my first kernel). Of course, it's no big deal to create it manually, I was just wondering whether do I do anything wrong or whether should I fill a bug report..

I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.

OpenSUSE Install :: Custom Build From Suse Studio|missing "initrd-" File?

Dec 2, 2010

If you can access Suse Studio here is thlink to the buildLFS Host - SUSE GalleryGoogle hasn't been friendly and neither has a search on these forums, I don't know which man to read so a finger in the right dirrection (preferably not the middle) would be nice as far as that goesRight now the yast live installer trips up at %84 while saving the boot loader configuration and displays a popup that says An error occurred during initrd creation. /sbin/mkinitrd: illegal optionI then press enter to acknowledge the message and the installation continues without a hitch.

When I go to boot up (no other os installed) grub says it cant find the file initrd- you boot the live cd again you can mount the boot partition and youll find a broken symlink called initrd that islooking for the missing file above.Like I said above, if it an obvious fix, all I need is some direction, I don't mind reading. (been doing that all day)If you need more specifics Id be happy to supply, I'm just not sure whats relevant and don't want to bloat the post.

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot From USB Connected External Hard Take Long Time From Loading INITRD Image To Start Boot Process?

Jul 18, 2011

I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

OpenSUSE Install :: Install 11.3 But The PC Restarts Itself Before Loading The Installer Dvd

Aug 29, 2010

I am trying to install opensuse 11.3 but the PC restarts itself before loading the installer dvd. When I run the installer dvd from 11.2 i can see all the files there, i click on auto run and it gives me an error msg saying cannot find autorun program also have a live gnome desktop cd and same problem, cant boot install media. This were both created on opensuse 11.2 using k3b for the first one and brasero for the second one. I have put both on an xp laptop and the installers start with no problem, both media check are fine, no error. On top of that I have some ubuntu dvd and some xp dvd, I have tried both on my pc and they boot fine, so its not a boot problem,

this ones were created on this same pc before I had opensuse, seems only cd or dvd created in opensuse fail, but it only fails when booting on my opensuse pc and work fine when I put them into xp laptop. I have been trying all day and I cant find any info on this problem. The only thing I can think of, that I have not tried is to try to burn a dvd using xp and try that one.

OpenSUSE Install :: Installer Says I'm Out Of Space?

Apr 7, 2011

I tried to install suse 11.4 from live usb when it was installing, it said at one point that there is 0 b available on my disk. It's impossible because I had a partition with 15 GB of space devoted to this installation. My hard drive is 300GB,100mb for system reserved, about 50 + 214 for windows and the fourth partition is extended 35 GB. The extended 35 has 20 GB for FAT 32 and then 15 GB for the suse. And it said there is no room. pressed explore or something from the error message and then the whole computer froze. I had to reboot and the grub was ofc fcked up, nice. So, atm I am running from another live cd. When I tried to boot the openSUSE live usb the usb was ruined.. I don't know what had happened but it tried to load the live usb, it had it's cameleon ture and then error messages that said something about the usb being read only. So, do you have any ideas what might have happened, why did it say there is no room when there clearly was?

Ubuntu :: NVIDIA Installer Can't Find Kernel Source

Mar 7, 2010

First my uname -a

Code: Linux quad 2.6.33 #1 SMP Sun Mar 7 18:22:02 CET 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux I am using Trisquel GNU/Linux 3.0. I am asking my questions here, since this involves non-free drivers. I succesfully installed the nvidia driver on the default kernel. But the default kernel has removed all support for DVB USB sticks, so I had to compile my own kernel.

I got the newest version from Saved the archieve to /usr/src/. unzipped the file in the directory (so my kernel source is now in /usr/src/linux-2.6.33/.) Made a symlink with ln -s linux-2.6.33 linux. I compiled the kernel succesfully. Did a "make install" and "make modules_install" and ran "update-grub". Restarted system. Cd'ed to my source directory and ran "make headers_install" succesfully. Looking at my timestamps, it looks like the kernel headers has been installed to /usr/src/linux-2.6.33/usr/include/linux/. I downloaded the latest x86_64 drivers from nvidias website. Went to console 1 and closed up X. If I start the installer without any parameters (sh NVIDIA*.run) I get the following error:

Code: ERROR: Unable to determine the version of the kernel sources located in '/lib/modules/2.6.33/source'. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' or 'kernel-devel' RPM installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' command line option. lib/modules/2.6.33/source is a symlink which point to /usr/src/linux-2.6.33

I get the same error if using --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux/, /usr/src/linux-2.6.33/ and similar options which link to this directory through symlinks. If I use --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-2.6.33/usr/include, I get the following error:

where is the script or which is the script does the mount things in rescue image?

I can't see away from within openSUSE to increase the size of my home partition after the install either. With my limited linux skills I think the simplest solution would be to just format the whole drive then install openSUSE. I tried to do that with some XP CDs, but none of them will boot, they keep listing various errors. I tried putting the drive in an external holder to plug it into another computer and format it just using windows, but windows won't recognize it.Using some free live cd/USB I don't know about
Using some setting in the openSUSE installation menus I don't know aboutUsing windows or a windows CD (I can post the boot errors if needed)

When i booted the machine off of openSUSE 11.2 disk it booted nice and fast, then installed without a hitch. When i put the Ubuntu disk into my laptop it booted fast and fine there.I'm just curious if anyone has any ideas why that desktop would seem to disagree with a bootable Ubuntu disk like that.
