OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.1 Nvidia Quadro FX-5000 (190.53) - Fatal Server Error: Caught Signal 11. Server Aborting

Mar 3, 2010

I am having a strange problem with the Opensuse 11.2 Xorg server. Graphics hardware is Nvidia Quadro FX-5000, driver is ver 190.53. 90% of the time, I am getting a seg violation from the Xserver on trying to login via kdm:

[Code]... the error that is present in the "kdm.log" file. So far, it doesn't seem to be user dependent (happens either as root or joe random user,) Again, so far, it only seems to happen with "driver nvidia" enabled in the config file, not with "driver nv" The failure occurs shortly after hitting return on the login screen. After it fails, it starts up a new Xserver, and presents a new login screen. Repeated attempts seem to *eventually* succeed, but 90% of the time, it fails I strongly suspect the Nvidia driver, but I have not been able to find anything documenting any similar problems.

OpenSUSE Install :: Root Sends Reboot Signal?

May 26, 2010

My server is opensuse 11.1 I recently wrote a small script to quickly shut down or reboot my server (I needed this because I need to close an application manually before shutting down. The shutdown line in the script was: /sbin/shutdown -r now When I tested the script (as root) from the console terminal, It worked just fine but after reboot strange things started to happen if I logged in as root - while the mouse works, the keyboard freezes (rebooting the server does not help). While I can still use console terminal, if I try to start any application that requires root permission or log in as root from my sftp client then I will get an error on the server that says; broadcast message from root (time & date), the system is going down for reboot now! I have since commented out level 6 in my inittab, so that now when root sends a reboot signal and It shows the message about going to reboot, it does not actually go into reboot anymore because of the commented out line but that is ofcourse not an healthy way to go about it.

Sometimes when I boot, the TV does not receive a signal until the boot stage reaches the KDM. I do not know how to reproduce this exactly.

I would buy a new HDD but i cant really vouch spending $80Aus on a IDE 2.5 just to play with linux. Anyhow it seems to read the USB stick which was created following the directions on this site but when it attempts to load the Realtec LAN (i think) it seems to get stuck in a loop. I have attached a screen print of what i see, it hangs for a few seconds then starts over with the same writing. Anyone know what that means or how i can fix this so i can try 10.10?

Ubuntu :: Caught In Login Screen Loop - Karmic 9.10

Mar 16, 2010

I have a real issue and need urgent help. I am stuck in a login loop and have looked in several threads in order to find a solution for my issue. I am relatively new to Ubuntu/Linux and do not really know my way around especially when it comes to command prompt. Thus I need someone with patience and who can guide me step by step in order to get to the bottom of the issue and to fix it.

The issue started all of a sudden, no particular reason. I only uninstalled evolution before and then rebooted. The shutting down process got stuck forever and I turn off the PC by holding the power button. Then I attempted to start, the PC boots to the login screen and I select my name and enter the correct password as usual. Then the screen changes for a split of a second to the back command screen and I can see the word crypto or so. Then the screen returns to the login screen and this loops.

Ubuntu :: Mouse Caught In Firefox Even Alt-tab Doesn't Work?

Oct 31, 2010

When I start firefox the mouse seems captured by it.I can use the mouse inside the firefox screen (change tabs, use menu, select/paste) but not anywhere else. Even if a popup appears (site wants to register a cookie) then I can only use the keyboard to "ok" it. alt-tab to another window is not possible.Using the mouse in the gome-panel won't work.I can get the mouse pointer anywhere on the screen but mouse clicks don't seem to register. I've had this problem before on 10.04 and the only thing that worked then was to create a new useraccount (a lot of hassle).

edit: The window manager also won't react to the mouse so closing the firefox window is not possible using the windowmanager buttons(X - 0)It's also not limited to Firefox, after I closed firefox via it's menu and then started a gnome-terminal the mouse was caught in that. After closing the gnome-terminal and restarting firefox it degraded even further in that the mouse would'nt even work in the window itself anymore.Only a reboor would reset the problem.

Software :: Rtorrent 0.7.9 On Fedora - Caught Segmentation Fault

Dec 30, 2008

Due certain torrent sites I'm visiting I was forced to upgrade to rtorrent 0.7.9, which isn't avaiable through F8 repositories so I had to compile it myself. It went fairly smooth and I've been using it now for couple of months with no problems whatsoever.

However, recently, it started crashing on me, at the start, throwing out following message:

Caught Segmentation fault, dumping stack:
Stack dump not enabled.

I have no clue what this is. I can assure you that I haven't altered anything on my system after I compiled the client.

Eventually, I am able to start the program, after an x-amount of tries.

I even tried to delete my session directory once. It seems to have helped at one occasion, but several days later, I was in the same trouble.

OpenSUSE Install :: Error Appeared Stating That Disc Image Was Not Burnt Due To Some Error

Dec 29, 2010

Okay, so bear with me for the lack of detail, its 3:46am and I'm really a beginner at this. So here is my issue: I decided I wanted to try Linux, so i got a Disc Image of Opensuse 11.3. while burning this disc image to a DVD-R I had no issues. But after the Validation was done an error appeared stating the disc Image was not burnt due to some error (apologies for not paying too close attention here) although the entire burn completed without issue. So I closed it and figured I would try again with another Disk when i get one.

Well as it turns out I did burn the Disc Image, and decided to try the Install. I have previously installed Ubuntu a few times and figured it was just as easy.. so I restarted my computer and booted from the CD. went through the Installation up to the Partition part.. This kind of confused me at first but I eventually got that it wanted to shrink my existing windows partition in order to make room. so i went along with it and began the install. well about halfway through the installation error messages kept showing telling me there were missing Packs. after about 10 messages I aborted the install for fear of what would happen now i have a shrunken partition and i dont know how to fix or what to do. I would still like to install opensuse but i dont have anymore DVD-R's and my Flash drive is too small. I will try to provide any info i can upon request. Oh, I forgot to mention im Running windows 7. if that helps at all which I doubt it does. I can safely access windows, nothing happened to the information on my drive. Im just missing 50GB of space now.

General :: Recovering Files On External Disk Caught In OS Installation

May 10, 2011

I was installing Ubuntu to the internal disk in my main machine, with all external drives unplugged for safety - then discovered I had accidentally chosen the external drive and it wasn't unplugged. (Seeing three drives not two listed as installation targets should have tipped me off, but I guess my IQ was low that day.)The external drive, in compliance with Murphy's Law, was my backup drive with all vital current files. The last few months of work gone. Now the drive shows only the stuff I normally expect in / on any Linux machine. It mounts showing as ext4, but the disk was (I'm 98.5% sure) originally ext3.However, the installation did not finish.Whatever files got copied, clobbered only a fraction of the disk. df reports only 1% of the space used.Maybe the bulk of my valuable files are okay, and could be recovered with some tool?

There are other questions on this site about file recovery, but many are for Microsoft Windows, or for malfunctioning disks, or some other situation. I'm on Linux with a physically healthy external disk. I'm fairly sure that the more recent and more important files are in multiple copies on that disk, so if one copy is clobbered there's hope to get the second copy.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Force X To Output Video Signal

Jan 25, 2010

I have a new cluster of four OpenSuSE servers serving VM's for a development lab. I have been fighting the good Linux/OpenSuSE fight against established Windows environment and I am embarrassed by certain hardware behavior in X.The four machines are in a cluster with an inexpensive TrendNet TK-407 KVM. The Linux Boxes are Dell T3500's with NVidia Quadro NVS290. I am not running the NVidia proprietary driver.

The behavior is that X keeps placing the display in sleep/powersave mode. If I boot the machine everything works until X takes over upon which point it decides that the display is not there and places it into standby.I don't care whether the KVM may or may not be responding correctly to some monitor protocol, and neither do I care to know or learn about the various DPMS or monitor protocols. The important thing here is that Windows experiences no such behavior. The solution I seek is to configure X to force the signal out of the card, disregarding any DPMS or other protocols.
