OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Specify Hard Disk / Cannot Find Repository

Sep 19, 2010

I am new to linux. I am trying to install suse 11.3 on my desktop which has following configuration:

Intel Pentium 4 processor 32 bit
512 mb RAM
80 gb Hard Disk

I made a 20gb partition on my hard disk and formatted it as fat32 for installing suselinux on it. I changed my boot priority and booted the system from the bootable dvd. The problems are:

1). Message is displayed telling to ensure that cd 1 is in the drive. I cannot make out what this means when the dvd is already in the drive. If I press ok same message keeps coming if I press back following occurs.
2). The installation starts and asks for language and keyboard type. Then it asks me to specify the hard disk and then a message is displayed that it cannot find repository.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Find Active Update Repository For 10.3

Aug 12, 2010

I am trying to update four OpenSUSE 10.3 servers. This worked once on one server, but I have been unable to repeat that success. I use yast's Online Update to select repositories, but at the end of the repository refresh they keep coming back with 'No active update source is available. Exit Online Update now?' I get this error:
Download failed: File /repodata/repomod.xml not found on media: [URL]

It appears to connect to remote repositories, but always fails. Is it realistic for me to expect to update 10.3, or is it a lost cause? I am not ready to jump to 11 yet, but I am required to update them. I am a newb, so I am not clear on the process. Are package versions locked in place for specific versions of OpenSUSE? If so, how can I find out what the final versions were for 10.3 so that I can at least tell my auditors that they are as up-to-date as they can be?

General :: Install All Packages From An APT Repository?

Jun 11, 2010

Is it possible to install all packages from an APT repository?

I know it is possible to do it manually, but then you would need to know all the package names, and I don't.

I want to install all the packages from BackTrack into my Ubuntu installation. I really don't like the idea of having it in a VM and having a separate partition for it is even more out of the question. I know that the folks at BackTrack doesn't like it when people leech their repositories, but that's what you get for releasing open source software. Stupid? maybe.. A valid reason? probably not.. Do I still want it? Yes.

Another edit: I have now given up on this as it seems impossible to get it to work even by manually installing packages.

OpenSUSE Install :: Blank Screen After Boot - No Present Windows

Nov 4, 2010

For some reason, sometimes after I just turn the computer off by pressing the power button while hooked up to the video mount, I'll turn the computer on and (after it automatically logs into the standard user) come to a blank black screen. The only thing I can access is by pressing Alt+Tab to get a "no present windows" window, and thats it. Could it be that an activity or something has been deleted somehow?

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgraded From 11.2 To 11.4 - Switching Systems Packages To PACKMAN Packages

Aug 31, 2011

I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.

The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.

Ubuntu :: Repository May No Longer Be Available

Apr 30, 2010

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.I am using Debian in case you noticed by the screenshot but the solution should be the same as it would be if the OS was Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Repository May No Longer Be Available / Could Not Be Contacted

Jan 2, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 (unable to upgrade to 10.10 just yet). About a week or two ago, Update Manager started complaining. After choosing "check for updates" I'm getting the following error:Could not download all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

I'm getting similar errors when using apt-get. I tried to use a repository of a different country (fi instead of il), but still got 404 response, so this doesn't seem to be a local server problem. I would find it odd that 8.10 would be removed from the repositories, but if not - what has happened? I'm not even sure if the problem is on my end or not. I can't find anyone else complaining so (unless I'm missing out) the problem is probably local, but I don't really know where to start looking.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Install 12.1 M5 From Hard Disk - Error - No Repository Found

Sep 13, 2011

I would like to test 12.1 M5 on my real hardware, so I have special for this purpose two additional partitions (sda2 (to install milestone) and sda3 (to store installation ISO files)). I am running my stable 11.4 with Grub on sda1.

I do not like to burn DVDs just for short test of one milestone, so I was used to download DVD ISO, to unpack it to sda3 partition with all its files, then I changed Grub to boot install Linux from sda3. Installation complains there is no DVD or CD, then I chose to force installation from hard disk and select sda3 partition and select root directory "/". As I was used to from 11.4 this will start installation as it would be started from DVD.

But I think the problem has appeared since 12.1, where I get message: No repository found. (on sda3 / ), so the installation does not start.

I know this is not official way to install openSuse, but it worked before, and it was fast and easy for me, to install from hard disk.
