i upgraded from 11.1 to 11.2. Unfortunately the new kernel does not work with my sata/southbridge (i googled and figured its a known issue). So i tried to boot a 11.1 64bit rescue system to install the older kernel and the corresponding initrd. The problem is, that i cant find the kernel and initrd on the rescue system.
A fault in my USB key killed the contents of the /boot partition. I could restore grub, and got back kernel files by extracting kernel-desktop-188.8.131.52-0.4.1.i586.rpm, but now I miss initrd! (I have currently no means to make it.)Would someone having this one be kind enough to e-mail it to me? (It's around 6 MB so it should be OK.) I'll PM you my e-mail address.
I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

I've downloaded 2.6.36-rc8 vanilla kernel, then I copied .config file from my current working kernel 184.108.40.206-168.fc12.x86_64, then I've configured, compiled and installed kernel like this:

I checked my .config and ACPI, and File Systems are built into kernel and not loaded as modules... And, I have LVM but my /boot partition isn't in it, so I don't HAVE to use initrd, right? How can I boot from a vanilla kernel without initrd ?
I just did a new install of Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit) on a system with multiple older versions of Ubuntu already installed. There was a dpkg error during the install with no useful information provided, otherwise the install completed normally. When I rebooted, the old grub2 ran and presented my old boot menu. When I mounted the 10.04 partition to see what was there, I found that /boot/grub/ was empty and /boot/initrd.img was missing. The other boot files were present.
I've had a Centos 5.3 zimbra mailserver set up for about 3 months now.Every 7-10 days or so, the system will do a kernel panic and I've been putting off its resolution due to other matters.I'm now ready to look into it but I have two issues :
1) No logs.
So far, I've manually rebooted when a kernel panic occured and could look at the panic printout and write down relevant info. But since I wanted more info than I had written down, I went hunting in the logs for the kernel panic event (one happened earlier today) but, to my surprise, I noticed the system doesn't log the kernel panic at all. Kdump is currently disabled as I'd like to keep all available memory available to the system but I was under the impression it would log the kernel panic message regardless but would simply leave out more advanced diagnostic information.How would I make sure the kernel panic is logged so I can have more info about it ?

I've also seen f793bee4 instead of the highlighted part above but everything else is always the same from the times I've seen (as I haven't always had the chance to be around when a panic occured).I'm looking further into it at this point but early research seem to indicate this could be a memory issue. I'll run memtest next weekend to check that out (since I don't want to take the system offline for any length of time during office hours) but people here might have other theories based on what I've put up so far. The system has all of the latest patches and updates and is running only what I need as far as software goes (zimbra server + prerequisites, x + GNOME (not loaded on startup), firefox and vnc for windows RDP access). My system also uses a software RAID1 array (boot = md0 and / = md2 with swap files not being mirrored as there's no need to).
PS : In order to further troublehsoot by myself before posting here, I've tried to enable kdump to see if kdump is the culprit for the missing logs but I'm also having an issue with it. I'm getting a "No kdump initial ramdisk found" and "mkdumprd: failed to make kdump initrd" messages at startup. I'm thinking this might be because of my raid array ? I've found an old bug report regarding one of those error messages on centos 5.2 but it was supposedly fixed in the 30 version by RH and I'm using the latest one (56).
I need to install Ubuntu on approximately 50-60 netbooks. None of them have CD drives, and I don't want to have to install them individually, walking around with a USB stick. I figured the fastest way to install on so many machines is to use a combination of apt-cacher (http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-set-up...ith-apt-cacher) and netbooting. I have successfully booted one machine to test, but as soon as the kernel comes up, support for the network interface is gone. Specifically, the "atl1c" module is not included on the netboot initrd image. Also, I would like to try to use preseeding, and I need to get that onto the initrd as well.
So, to summarize my question: How can I create a custom install kernel and initrd? I have a feeling it's related to the "debian-installer" category in the package repository, but I have not found any good documentation about doing this.
I have a system running openSUSE 11.2 with Desktop and XEN kernel, as well as Windows 7 (not by choice though...). I have noticed a strange time issue, with Windows 7 and the desktop kernel the time is correct (like for example now: 1:32 PM) but in the XEN kernel it is ahead several hours (6:32 PM). If it was an issue between openSUSE and windows then I would think that it is a problem with the system clock but I don't know what would cause a time issue between kernels like that.
differences between Kernel Default and Kernel Desktop? I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.

I installed OpenSuSE 11.2 64bit from a Linux Magazine #111 dvd and now cannot create DomU guests. The exact error is in the subject line. It is sitting on a software RAID-1 partionion on two (mirrored) hard disks. When I first install - formatting all partitions - it reports error 17 and won't load the OS. After running the Repair installed system from the DVD I get the impression it is doing things twice rather than doing the repairs once on the RAIDed partition. Should I go back to 11.1?

I'm I seeing this wrong or is the initrd file in kernel-220.127.116.11-170.2.72.fc10.x86_64 a zero byte file and that's why I can't boot with it( get this "kernel panic not syncing VFS unable to mount root fs on known -block (0,0)" message)
The RHEL 4 update 7 installation CD installs the kernel with version 2.6.9-78.EL and therefore must contain corresponding vmlinuz and initrd.img. However I would like to have an all modules initrd that is used during installation but for a different version (2.6.9-78.0.13.EL). Is there a way in which I could obtain/make such an initrd?
I'm having an issue when I'm trying to install SuSE linux onto my desktop.I go through all the steps and everything looks okay, but when it starts to install the packages, I get an error message that basically says:kernel.desktop - unable to install, exit status 127.I have a ATI X1950 video card in the computer, as well as a AMD 64 FX CPU in the system.
I understand that the new 11.2 version has a new kernel optimized for desktop use. Can someone tell me or show me where I can find the new kernel configuration options? I would like to see what options they choose to change.
When I installed the suse11.3, I running the "uname -r",the system shows "2.6.34-12-desktop",for some reasons,i need the kernel header for "2.6.34-12-desktop". I down the "kernel-source", "kernel-default" and "kernel-desktop" and I check the "/usr/src/" path, but only have these stuff "linux-18.104.22.168-0.7 linux-22.214.171.124-0.7-obj linux-obj", where can I get the kernel -header for "2.6.34-12-desktop".
Never thought much about it until now a but is it possible to get the desktop kernel at install with 11.3 DVD ? I always get default-kernel and have to do the kernel dance to get the desktop-kernel I prefer. I'm familiar with the multiversion = kernel-desktop and methods to retain different versions. Just wondering.
I compiled my kernel, compiled scsi support into kernel, used the new kernel and initrd, the boot failed.Then ,i unzip my initrd, found that sd_mod.ko can't be insert, i added it manual, and reboot OK.so, why! in the kernel configure , the sd_mod.ko is set to <M> , but why it can't be found in initrd?
After migrating from openSUSE-11.1 to openSUSE-11.2 together with a few further online updates including a kernel upgrade to 126.96.36.199-0.1-desktop, my system started freezing a couple of times for two days.
I made up my mind googling for "linux freeze", found a hint saying, that 188.8.131.52 causes trouble, fell back to 184.108.40.206-0.1-desktop, and voila: the problem is gone. What a relief!
Finally got around to updating from 220.127.116.11 and was surprised at the slew of warnings issued during the install. Rather than post them here, see: pastebin - Someone - post number 1792805 I would have bet money that the machine wouldn't boot after this, but it in fact did (whew). Since the kmp modules were not updated with this new kernel, I have merely suspicions....any one have the real reason for these warnings? Same type of warnings occured (thou I didn't copy the output) when I installed the ATI prop driver rpm. everything seems to work as normal so far, but it was so very different than many previous updates that I'm a bit leery.
A few upgrades ago, I had also a desktop-kernel installed. I tried starting with the standard and the desktop kernel, but could not see a difference. Why this desktop-kernel and what's the difference with the standard kernel? HP laptop with Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5600 - OpenSUSE 11.3 -KDE4.4.4
On a fresh install 11.3 gnome I am getting an update freeze on the kernel-desktop-18.104.22.168-0.5.1. This is on the initial software update after first log in on fresh system. It downloads the package and freezes during the update and causes all my other updates to reload. I went to init 3 and ran zypper update and saw that it made it to 91% and then stopped. After that I usually get a corrupted install.
I just updated to new 2.6.38-18 kernel and headers. Now the latest Ati 11.2 driver wont install completely and I cannot get any X. So I removed the ati drivers to use the opensuse drivers but kde wont start now (dont know what the issue is.. maybe someone can poitn me out the the correct log file to look for errors).. I am using gnome now. Anyone knows how to get ground this and install ati drivers.
I installed Opensuse 11.2 DVD on a machine with Windows XP. During the installation I installed the KDE desktop. I had not tried out the KDE desktop. I had a Live CD with the Gnome desktop that i had tried out and liked. I think I like the Gnome desktop better. Now I would like to run both desktops. After going to the install new software and changing the view to patterns and select the "Gnome Desktop Environment" I get this error.
