OpenSUSE Hardware :: No Application That Can Open Type Block Device (inode/blockdevice)?

Jul 21, 2010

I'm having trouble mounting hard drives and partitions - and am rather nervous about using Yast partitioner to do this. Is there something that would tell me about mount points in Yast partitioner? So far I haven't been able to find that information anywhere. I don't want to lose information on existing drives and partitions but do want to be able to access them. Some of them appear under disk information in "My Computer" but if I try to mount them I get this error message. There is no application installed that can open files of the type block device (inode/blockdevice).I was trying to edit fstab, his didn't seem straightforward either. I've been hacking this about in other Linux distros - so not entirely clueless

OpenSUSE Install :: VFS - Cannot Open Root Device "NULL" Or Unknown-block - 3,1

Nov 14, 2009

Currently running rc2. Downloaded 11.2 final DVD, md5sum is good, burned DVD, YaST says media check is good. (And for completeness burned a second DVD and get the same problem.)

On booting from the DVD I select "Installation" - a kernel loads and starts checking available h/w devices then crashes with the above message.

Followed by Please append a correct "root=" boot option.

Tried with root=sda1 (partition that is /) and only change is unknown-block (0,0)

My best guess is that I have EXT4 (did a clean install of RC2)? And/or I dont have a swap partition?

Feb 8, 2011

I am using Wind River Linux- 2.6.27.18-WR3.0bg_standard. The problem is whenever I execute "reboot, ls, cd" and many other commands the OS prompts me an error-
"end request: i/o error, dev sda, sector "(different sector each time)" and
EXT3-fs error (device sda1):ext3_get_inode_loc:unable to read inode block- inode-4088001, block-4097027
I also executed "dmesg", it also showed similar errors. Has the disk gone bad or the kernel is corrupted?

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Browse 11.3 CD - Block Device Write Protected

Jul 15, 2010

I can browse the iso image easily enough with a loopback mount, but when it comes to mounting the actual CD (which I did first), I get:

Code:
$ sudo mount -t udf,iso9660 /dev/dvd /mnt/dvd
mount: block device /dev/dvd is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/dvd,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
/var/log/messages isn't very helpful, either:

Code:
Jul 15 15:15:56 bkorb-dt kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Jul 15 15:15:56 bkorb-dt kernel: sr0: rw=0, want=68, limit=4
Jul 15 15:15:56 bkorb-dt kernel: isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=sr0, iso_blknum=16, block=16
$ md5sum openSUSE-11.3-DVD-x86_64.iso
adf5d2a0a03c1e3aaf102fd6a4771b87 openSUSE-11.3-DVD-x86_64.iso

I burned it with K3B and it gets the same result trying to mount it. K3B seems to know that the image is an iso9660 and is able to display the various 9660 id fields just fine. It just won't mount.

Hardware :: "failed To Set Xfermode," / Getting Ext3 Errors About Failing To Read An Inode Block?

Aug 19, 2010

About a month and a half ago I purchased two new 500GB serial ATA hard drives from Best Buy to replace my other, very old 186GB SATA hard drive. Since then I've had issues with Linux. Sometimes when it's booting it gives a bunch of error messages, such as "failed to set xfermode," and then it boots. Other times, after INIT has started, I get ext3 errors about failing to read an inode block, then "cannot start /sbin/agetty" and "ID c5 respawning too fast," and at this point booting fails altogether. These errors seem to happen randomly. However, once the system has booted, everything seems to work fine, and there are no further issues.

I know it's not a faulty hard drive or filesystem because I've tried Linux on both hard drives numerous times, and I've reformatted many times, one time I even tried erasing one of the hard drives byte for byte and then formatting it, and still had issues.

I've tried Arch Linux, Gentoo, VectorLinux, and openSUSE, and all of them have given me these problems. The live CD's for Ubuntu 10.04, Clonezilla, and GParted all have trouble partitioning/cloning/installing to these hard drives. At this point, it's obvious to me that there is a universal problem with this particular model.

GRUB and Syslinux both work fine, and Windows XP works fine too. It's only Linux that's giving me issues.

I would rather not buy a new hard drive if I can help it, seeing as these two are almost brand new. Is there some BIOS setting that could be causing these problems? Is it some unsupported feature in the hard drives? Is it a bug in the Linux kernel?

The hard drive model is WD5000AADS. Both hard drives are this same model. My motherboard is an NForce 680i SLI.

EDIT: I've tried ext2/3, ReiserFS, and XFS, and all of them do this, so I don't think it's a filesystem issue.

Then a call trace...This is a brand new install of Maverick I copied my files onto a USB and did a fresh install on the whole drive using the alternate CD (the desktop and netbook editions both failed to read on my system) was previously using Karmic with no issues. I tried to e2fsck the dev/sda1 from the CD in "repair broken system" mode but the return was "clean" I read that as the file system being intact but this is an area that I have no real knowledge in.

Ubuntu Installation :: From A USB Flash Memory Stick - Warning "VFS: Cannot Open Root Device "sda6" Or Unknown-block(0,0)" And Kernel Panic On First Boot

Apr 24, 2011

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB flash memory stick. It works fine until around 95%, where I get the following warning/error:

I click OK and the installer seems to finish nicely, except the terminal throws several errors along these lines (see photo):

I tried also with 10.04 LTS, the difference being that the install warning appears two or three times instead of once. Some results from googling (Ubuntu Forums, Ubiquity bug) suggest unchecking the initial update options. I am going to try this but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the boot loader right (there seemed to be problems with this).

OpenSUSE :: Cdrecord Has No Permission To Open The Device?

Jan 7, 2010

Still getting the "cdrecord has no permission to open the device" error when trying to burn an iso image to a DVD-RW.

I did yet another clean install of openSUSE 11.2 64 on my desktop computer, did updates, added Nvidia and Packman repos (it's not a repo problem as I tried it several times on a totally clean install), added codecs and stuff as advised by caf.

I updated the DVD drive firmware earlier today.

My user is a member of ALL groups.

Drive is an LG GH22NSS50 (sata)

It all works (with the same DVD-RW) under winxp on the same machine.

Is it HAL or something else that blocks permission to devices?

I'm really getting sick to death of this problem, and would be happy just to get rid of anything blocking permissions to the DVD drive.

OpenSUSE Install :: ATI Driver - Boot But X Windows Crashes When Open Any Application?

Apr 4, 2011

I am new to opensuse, having migrated from Ubuntu. I have had some difficulty with power management on Ubuntu so i decided to install opensuse with kde as i heard it was good for laptops. I have had lots of trouble getting opensuse 11.4 to boot properly and to run without freezing.

I have trawled the forums and bugzilla and the documentation, e.g. SDB:ATI - openSUSE and SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE. Consequently i am now able to boot (normally), however whenever i open any application, e.g. Dolphin file manager, Firefox, etc, the tab starts to load (little circle starts spinning on the tab), and then it freezes.

At this point I can exit X Windows and enter the text mode. I have repeated this with the FGLRX and Radeon drivers running. This is always repeatable. I can also boot into level 3 and do things there.

My computer details are:
HP Pavilion dv6 3032TX
Processor - Intel i7 720 QM
Ram - 6GB
GPU - ATI Mobility Radeon 5650
Harddrive - 640GB 5400rpm

[Code]...

What i have tried so far:

1. First 4 steps on SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE
2. Install and run FGLRX

Note that i cannot failsafe boot - it never boots into X Windows and just hangs. I really do like the look and feel of opensuse and would love to use it, but at this point my only option is to try another distro.
