OpenSUSE Hardware :: Slow External Hard Drive / Make It High?
Jan 7, 2010
So I just reinstalled OpenSUSE 11.2 and I went from having 20-30 mbps speed to and from my 1 tb usb ntfs external hard drive to having about 1 mbps transfer speeds now. Is there any suggestions for how I can fix this? I know it can go faster, I just need to figure out how. and would setting acpi=off at boot affect this?
EXT4 main disk
I'm trying to back up my hard drive to a 2 TB WD external so that I can do a clean install of 10.10, however I'm getting tremendously slow write speeds. It hovers around 1.5 MB/s and steadily slows from there. It tells me it will take 150+ hours to transfer 400 GB of data.
I have a AMD quad core processor and 8 gigs of ddr3 ram... USB 2.0... I feel this should go much faster.
My father installed Kubuntu to his external hard drive to try it out, however, it is running extremely slowly. It takes a good minute and a half to boot to the Plasma desktop and it even seems to run faster off of the LiveCD.His system easily meets the specifications to run Kubuntu (4 gigs of RAM, decent NVIDIA graphics card) yet it slows to a crawl immediately upon booting. Does anyone know how to fix this? The hard drive is a Western Digital MyBook, 475GB model.
I am trying to boot from an external hard drive, and have tried to use unetbootin like I used when crating a bootable usb drive but it does not see my external and will not create bootbale iso for me to run from my external hard drive.
What im trying to do is install ubuntu on to an external hard drive, partition it and make it work. ive got a problem, as i have 200GB of games and other things already on that drive, before you say "copy it to another drive and then back" i cant, i dont have any other drives apart from my internal which has only got 20 gig left

I got a dell inspiron 1501 laptop with a 80Gb sata drive what is the best solution to add data storage space for someone that love to have multiples operating systems at hand Note: I use mostly linux so I won't need to change my laptop for many years maybe ...
I have CentOS 5.5 x86_64 with Apache, php and mysql. I have just installed OTRS (helpdesk - trouble ticket system) on that server and no users. This system works with perl, apache and mysql. I notice that is slow to respond and at times unresponsive the apache welcome page. code...
My external disk does not appear as mounted on the desktop (It's e-Sata and NTFS, samsung 1.36 Tera bytes ) There's nothing in /media, nor it appears on the desktop as mounted. What can i do to be able to use it?
What I've done is partition my external hard drive to have 130g for my Windows info. Then putting the 90g towards Linux. I used a live cd on my home computer to format the 90g of Linux. I'm simply wanting something to learn more about from time to time that I can use on my home computer, laptop, fiance's computer, etc. So the formatting went successful. I have linux on the 90g of hard drive that I wanted it on. The problem is this. When I take the live cd out, when I remove my external hard drive from my computer. The home computer (which has Windows) won't boot. It comes up with a error 21. But now when I boot with the external hard drive I use, I make it to the boot menu and can boot from Windows.I need to be able to boot from Windows on this home computer, since my mother and grandparents use this computer quite a bit. I'm not always going to have my ext. hard drive plugged into this computer, so I need some help if you all know now.
I'm trying to get an external HD to mount on my Dell Laptop running OpenSuse 11.1. When I connect I get the following:
usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 usb 1-5: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice scsi3 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices usb 1-5: New USB device found, idVendor=0bc2, idProduct=0503 usb 1-5: New USB device strings: Mfr=54, Product=69, SerialNumber=95
But am left scratching my head. I don't think its showing up in the etc/mtab - which i think it is supposed to?
(Just to clarify: This has nothing to do with the 11.4 mount problem with external NTFS drives that is stickied in this forum.)
I have this 2 year old WD Elements drive (500GB) that is NTFS formatted and that I've used for backup all this time, until a few months ago it failed to be recognized by any computer. The power supply is working, so I first requested a new cable, which didn't help, and now I received a replacement. But still I would like to save some of the data on the hard disc. I need to have this figured out within this week as I have to return the old drive, or they will charge me for the new.
So far, the only software to still recognize the drive was a WD analytical tool for Windows. It didn't find any problems or show any error messages as far as I could tell. They recommended using testdisk to recover the data, but testdisk doesn't recognize the hard drive in the first place. I also tried KParted, but no success.
I have a laptop with only 30GB storage and I want to install Lubuntu in virtual box but Lubuntu needs 5GB of storage space which i dont have. Could i use an external 160GB hard drive to act as the hard drive for the virtual machine without affecting the files that are already on the external hard drive
It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.
Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.
I can not use disks
I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)
I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.
I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.
I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.
When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)
Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.
I've been searching for awhile and can't find any threads that can solve my problem. From other threads, however, I have noticed that I should probably include my menu.lst, listed below
I have also ran the boot info script and received the RESULTS.txt file it generates. Listed below
I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.
Code: sundar@sundar-sundar:~$ fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
I'm using my F11 box primarily for browsing. And I have freakishly low RAM (256). All was good up until recently. Now Im experiencing a lot of HD access with a lot of grinding and HD light flashing at different intervals when going online. I've searched but found no mention of viruses that would do this. I would typically associate this with a lot of downloading, as with software update. However I've disabled this program (since the box was in a stable state for my intended purpose and I did not want to invite new maintenance).
Any ideas what could cause this? It can become so intensive that the mouse is practically disabled and any attempts to close a window take upwards of 15 minutes. I frequently receive the Firefox message that the application has become unresponsive, do I wish to kill the program or wait.
I need to be able to schedule and automate the recording process, to record DV with audio directly to the hard drive. Can anyone tell me if this is possible with linux? Can anyone suggest hardware/applications that would work to accomplish this? This is not for security purposes. This is to record classes that will be made available online.
I worry about mounting properly an external USB hard disk. It is a sata 1To NTFS formatted It works perfectly with a XP SP3. With xuxbuntu 10.10 , with ntfs-3g installed , it is VERY long to transfer data:it took almost 3 days for 360Go. When I connect to the station , it automatically mount by itself on /media/disk without any option;I suspect bad options are used and no use of NTFS-3G. How to oblige it to mount with good options?
I have 350GB external Western Digital USB hard Drive. When I try to remove it from the system by executing Safely Remove Drive menu the fedora 15 system gets stuck. The processor starts giving a hum sound and it goes on even if it is left for half an hour in the stuck state. The Mouse is not working and everything is halted.
I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation
Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
i have installed fedora 14 with so many libraries ,development tools installed on my pc but i usually have to present some projects which can run on my system .........and can't be executed or compiled due to absence of libraries and tools there so, i there some way to so that i can use this current installation on my hard drive of my pc to some external media like external hard disk and plug and use that installation anywhere on any system..
I initially installed OpenSuse on my Laptops internal drive (clean formatted) and everything worked fine. Later I took out laptop's hard drive and put it into a USB enclosure to use as an external drive.
I'm getting a really low speed (2-3 mbps) while transferring data to my USB drive and external hard drive. I've heard this problem's there in Karmic but not in Jaunty but i have Jaunty and yet I'm facing this problem.
My ubuntu login window seems to be chrased and seems no way to restore it. I was planning to move ahead with reinstalling it but could any1 tell me how can i copy data to external hard disk. I am in Mannual restore section with promt staying at root@ubuntu :/#
