OpenSUSE Hardware :: Error - VLC Failed To Re-initialize Your Sound Output Device
Jul 8, 2010
my sound works when i boot up but as soon as i play a couple of files with VLC video or audio it doesn't matter the sound stops and comes up with an error saying: ALSA version problem:VLC failed to re-initialize your sound output device. Please update alsa-lib to version 1.0.22 or higher to fix this issue.Potential ALSA version problem:VLC failed to initialize your sound output device (if any). Please update alsa-lib to version 1.0.23-2-g8d80d5f or higher to try to fix this issue. I found latest version on net and installed and yast said install fail version already installed my sound device is HDA Intel (ALC C880 Analog)
I've been having a recurring problem on Slackware64 13.1. If I open VLC (or any other media player available for Slackware) before I open Firefox, then my sound works 100% and there's never any problem, however, if I open Firefox first, and there happens to be a flash video loading, then any other media player (mplayer-plugin, Amarok or VLC) will fail to play sound. VLC tells me:
Quote: Potential ALSA version problem: VLC failed to initialize your sound output device (if any). update alsa-lib to version 1.0.24 or higher to try to fix this issue. Now, I'm happy to do that if it will actually fix the problem, though I'll have to figure out how seeing as I'm something of a n00b. The thing is that I've not really done anything to alsa except run alsaconf on my first boot, so I'm not sure if that's really the problem I've been using Slackware64 for a few months now, I'm on my first ever install and for the most part I'm loving it. Been working through the little things that have been annoying me, and for the most part I've managed to find solutions either by reading the Slackbook, by browsing LQ or by doing a quick Google search. However, I can't seem to find any reference to this specific problem anywhere and I'm not sure what I should do.
have an OpenSuSE 11.4 (Linux 188.8.131.52-0.5-desktop) with XBMC (10.1) installed.During installation of SuSE, I've created a user called "xbmc" and enabled autologin for this user. After XBMC have been installed I added the following to /home/xbmc/.xinitrc - "exec /usr/bin/ck-launch-session /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/xbmc --standalone -fs"... so far so good - everything is perfectly fine..... or at least almost - when trying to play some musik I get the message "Failed to initialize audio device, Check your Audio Settings"... but if I close XBMC, log in to Gnome as root, open a terminal an su to user "xbmc" and start xbmc from commandline it works if I choose "Internal Analog Audio" in System -> System -> Audio Output. Now the spooky/funny parts appears... I check the options in Audio Output I see the following:
Defaults iec958 hdmi HDA Intel Defaults
When returning to auto-login - it stops working again... By the way - to be sure that it wasn't a rights-problem, I ended up changing the UID for the "xbmc"-user to "0" to ensure root-privilegies
when i start uubuntu it automatically goes to tty with out letting me login. then when i press startx it says:
NVIDIA: failed to initialize the nvidia graphics device pci:0:13:0 nvidia: please check your systems kernal log for additional erroe nvidia: messages and refer to chapter 8 nvidia: failed to initialize the nvidia graphics device! nvidia: screen found, but none have a usable configuration fatal screen error: no screen found
right before this i had activated a nvidia graphics device
I have HP ML350 G6 Server with RAID10 enabled on bios While trying to install Centos 5.5 64 bit OS I am getting the error mentioned below. "An Error Occured trying to initialize swap on device cciss/codop3. This problem is serious and the install cannot continue."
I am recently getting a very weird error on my Webmin. The result of this problem I suspect is I am no longer able to log into my Maia Mailguard which is my Spam Viewer.

I have a fresh install of Natty and i'm having some issues getting sound to work. My laptop has a built in sound card which works just fine. However, i also have a usb 5.1 sound card which isn't working at all. Both devices show up in 'Sound Preferences' but when i select the 5.1 device as the output device sound doesnt work. I ran the alsa-info.sh script and the output can be found here.
I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.
From the GUI, software update gives the error "Failed to Initialize - Failed to initialize the packaging backend. This may occur if other packaging tools are being used simultaneously." In the more details, "There are unfinished transactions remaining.
I run a terminal, switch to root and do as it tells me. It returns saying that there are no unfinished transactions. I've run it several times with the same result. Then I run "yum clean all" and "yum upgrade." The upgrade processes runs and reports "there are unfinished transactions..." However, the upgrade process still completes. Basically it is now a severe annoyance, but the system does seem to upgrade. I just cannot figure out why there are somehow unfinished transactions that I cannot get rid of. I tried reinitializing the rpm database - no luck. How can I somehow reset yum?
I keep getting a warning messaged almost every time I reboot about Ubuntu running in low-graphics mode on a Macbook 5,1. This has been happening since Lucid Beta 1.
Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module. Please see the system's kernel log for additional error messages and consult the NVIDIA README for details.
After I finish loading in low graphics mode I have to run "sudo nvidia-xconfig". Then, the next reboot the graphics card driver is loaded properly. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or have an idea how to correct it? I know it is a long shot, but do you think doing a fresh install of the stable release would work?
I have 2 NVIDIA card intalled - GT 240 and Geforce 9500.After updating by repo kernel to ver 184.108.40.206-0.5.1 and Nvidia driver by to ver 270.41.06 X server cant start

So for now only dismounting one of cards gives working X server.

which run without errors but an attempt to mount throws up the above error as well as saying - you must specify the file type (tried that) - and fails to mount. I've tried using YaST to format and encrypt it which throws up the same error when I run mount but actually does actually mount the filesystem Googling around has brought up info saying that it's probably a race condition brought on by invalid udev rules. I've got a (mostly) working system and the udev rules documentation leaves more confused than when I started.
i had a problem in which my ubuntu system was not able to log in into my account.

I have a HP 8510w which I attached to a sony tv via hdmi. picture is great but no sound. checked and in sound preferences, hdmi is not listed as a possible output device for sound. searched the net but couldnt find a solution. here some info:
Code: root@gre-HP8510w:/home/gre# uname -a Linux gre-HP8510w 2.6.35-28-generic #49-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 1 14:39:03 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux
When the RPM runs it come up with this error. How do I install the required dependencies? I have added more repositories, but still there are a few dependencies missing. Is there a zypper/sudo -get or something available? Opensuse 11.1 Gnome
I'm installing and configuring my first server using RackSpace CloudServers running Ubuntu Karmic Koala (9.10) and I'm now installing iRedMail. The installation runs successfully until I recieve this error:
Code: The following packages have unmet dependencies: mysql-server-5.0: Depends: mysql-server-core-5.0 (>= 5.1.30really5.0.83-0ubuntu3) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages < ERROR > Installation failed, please check the terminal output. I understand this is telling me there is some software that iRedMail (or something iRedMail is dependant upon) that needs installed. Is this correct? And if so, what is i needing installed and how do I do that (aptitude install example-package?)?
I have a strange issue with my RAID5 array - it worked fine for a month, a couple days ago it didn't start on boot with mdadm reporting "Input/Output error" - I didn't panic restarted my computer, same error. Then opened a Disk utility and it reported State: Not running, partially assembled - don't know why, I've pressed Stop RAID Array and started it again, voila - it reported State: Running - I've checked components list and there was nothing wrong with it. So I run Check Array utility, waited almost 3 hours to finish it and it worked since than, till today's morning - I've started my computer, and here we go, same error.
This is an initial state just after computer startup:
This is after I stop and start RAID5:
This is a components list:
I can see nothing wrong there yet not sure why mdadm fails on boot. I do not really like the windows solution I guess, when I check my array again, it will work fine again, but it then can fail in the same way without known reason.
i want to use linux but i am having some issues getting it to work on my system. my desktop is a p4 3.4gig with 512 DDR. When I insert my ubuntu CD it starts loading but then i get this screen/message:
Busybox v1.15.3(ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell(ash) Enter 'help' for list of built in commands (initramfs) mount:mounting/dev/loop0 on// filesystem.squashfs failed input/output error Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem/squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs if I put the same disc into my HP laptop it boots up ubuntu fine. (however it won't allow me to get online, but that is a different issue).
I have recently installed Octave on my desktop and I am very busy with RTFM ATM.However, this manual is huge and I could not find an answer to my problem. What I basically want to do is initialize a vector like
a= for i 1:100 a = [ a i ] endfor
Now my problem is that this will call the pager and I have to hit 'q' to get my prompt back. I know I can turn it off but the screen will still get cluttered with tons of output. Is there a way to initialize 'a' quietly without any screen output?
My scanner is Benq 5000 ,the default scanning software (xsane) give me the following message whenever I plug the scanner to the pc : Failed to Open Device 'Snapscan:libusb:005:002' Invalid Argument. I tried the gnome image scanning software too but it didn't recognize the scanner at all. The only software that worked is vuescan but unfortunately it is non-free software !!!!
I have been working on this for a while now and am absolutely stumped. Basically, what i am attempting to do is make my ubuntu box into a gateway for my network. I have everything working thru hard wire, but I simply cant get the wireless to work. No matter what I do, I cannot get my wireless card to transmit an essid and allow nodes to connect. I have tried assigning it in the interfaces file (shown below), and I have also tried manually modifying it using the iwconfig command. Here is the topology:
eth1: internet WAN eth2: ethernet out to LAN ra0: wireless out to LAN Here is a copy of my /etc/network/interfaces file: [CODE] auto lo
