OpenSUSE Hardware :: Change Mount Options (permissions) On USB Hard Drive?

Apr 19, 2010

I'm running Opensuse 11.2 and am using a couple of USB hard drives to store large data. One of these drives is formatted with FAT32 and one with NTFS. When I plug-in a USB device KDE4 shows me a little pop-up asking what I want to do with it, I select to open it in Dolphin which of course automatically mounts it.

My question is what if I want to change some of the mount options - is this possible without reverting to manual mounting? And second question is what system does it use to automount - Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu are all deprecating HAL in favour of pure udev, is this the case in Opensuse too?

Debian Hardware :: How To Mount Set Permissions On New USB Hard Drive?

Jul 17, 2010

You know the great thing about having a debian system is that you have to reinstall so rarely you miss all the new changes that happen in the system until you have to do something like install a new piece of software and realize that fstab has been turned into spaghetti and you no longer have the slightest idea what is going on.I just got a new 1TB USB2 drive to use for backups. I plugged in it and it was recognized fine but it was formatted in NTFS which I didn't particularly want so I reformatted it as ext4FS. It automounts fine but only with all permissions set to root. I tried doing a direct chmod on the drive but that wasn't recognized. Where in the hodgepodge of HAL settings and whatnot do I set it to make the drive user accessible and mount to somewhere other than /media/disk?

My mac osx hard drive does not boot anymore and I would like to get my important files off before I reformat the hard drive. I have run into a bit of an obstacle -- there seems to be some permissions setting that are barring me from accessing the files I need to. I can see the Machintosh HD and can access some files. How do I change permissions for the entire drive and all it's directories?

However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

OpenSUSE Network :: User Permissions And Auto-mount On Windows Drive

Feb 11, 2010

I'm running OpenSuse 11.2. I've got it running mostly the way I want and it connects to my wireless internet no problem. I have a external hard-drive on my Windows machine setup as a share folder. I can mount the drive with:

Code:

mount //10.13.23.2/D /home/james/mnt/win However when I do mount like this it doesn't give my any read/write privliages on the drive. Also on a slightly different issue but still mounting related I have my HDD partitioned into four main drives (not including swap etc). They are my Windows drive, a seperate storage partition formatted for Windows, my main linux drive and a seperate parition for linux storage.

I want to have my Windows drive, my Windows storage drive and my linux storage drive all mounted on boot. I tried adding these to fstab, and they mount fine but again I have no read/write permissions. My fstab looks like this:

Code:

/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD2500BEVT-35ZCT0_WD-WXE908AE4273-part5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD2500BEVT-35ZCT0_WD-WXE908AE4273-part6 / ext4

[code]....

Lastly I would like my Windows Share drive to mount on boot but I have been advised that I would need to write a shell script for this, to do network checks as obviously I won't always be connecting to my network.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Usb Hard Drive Won't Mount?

Jan 24, 2010

I bought a "WD My Passport Essential 320 GB" usb drive. When I plug it in (suse 11.2 x86_64 gnome version), it won't automount, a message appears ".../dev/sr2 is not a valid block device", I can not mount it manually neither Don't have a clue how to proceed in solving this issue. The drive is a bit strange though, it has some software on it for protecting data, which I wont need, but can't get rid of it neither. However when I connected it to my laptop running ubuntu 9.10 x86_64, the drive automounted ok, so I guess I must be missing some additional software on my suse. The drive was initially NTFS formated, but I did reformat it to FAT with ubuntu.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cloning The Hard Drive - Change The Menu.list?

Jan 13, 2010

Here's what i'm trying to do: i have a 300GB IDE hard drive that has a OpenSuse build. I am trying to replicate this HD so that i can have another box similar to the original one...my second drive is 500GB SATA.

So far, I just ran a 'dd' command to copy the 300GB to 500GB. Now, after having read on internet, i realized i need to change fstab & /boot/grub/menu.lst. specifically, we need to change for ex:/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Maxtor_7L300S0_L60LCJ0G-part1 to /dev/disk/by-id/sda1 i did use a Ubuntu LiveCD to access the fstab and changed the line as mentioned above. Now, how do i change the menu.lst?? right now, when i try booting up from this HD, i have issues. specifically, i get this error message: could not find /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00

General :: Setting Execute Permissions On Second Hard Drive

Apr 4, 2011

I am running Linux Mint on my primary hard drive, and I would like to access some folders I have on my second hard drive, which has Windows XP installed on it. However, whenever I try to use these folders, I am greeted with the error message, "The file is not marked as executable." While I know how to set files as executable whenever I am using folders on my Linux drive, whenever I try to set such permissions on my XP folders, I can't seem to make it work. The files revert to their former status, and I'm told that I don't have permission. Should I set the files as sharable from within XP, so that they aren't marked as read-only? Or is there another solution I've missed?

Fedora :: Weird Hard Drive / File System Permissions

Nov 29, 2009

I've been installing/tweaking F12, and I've found something that I can't say I've ever seen or expected to find before: the contents of my ~/Documents folder has lost its permissions and ownership info. I restored it from a backup last night/this morning, and I've rebooted a few times since then. Other folders from the backup are OK, just Documents.I don't know what my options are. I could try to blow it away and restore it, but that doesn't answer what caused it. If there's a "relabel" or something, that might help... though I've never had to do it before. Could it be that after these two-and-some-change years, my hard drive is giving out? Good thing I have a recent backup... but it'd be a shame to lose all my work getting F12 to work again.

Ubuntu Servers :: How In World Can I Change Permissions Either On Drive Or Folder

Jul 10, 2011

I had an old windoz 2003 server running a few recreational web sites. I've grown tired of all the hacking attempts, FTP floods, etc. Ok.. I've grown tired of windoz period. When I set the server up, I had the operating system on one physical drive and stored all of the web files on a separate physical drive just in case I ever wanted to make some changes to the operating system.in my adventurous ways, I've dumped windoz and installed ubuntu 11, 32 bit server edition on this machine. It is running fine from what I see on the server side. The first problem I've noticed is when even attempting to navigate to localhost through the server's web browser, I get a permissions issue.

So... off to the drive where the httpd.conf file points to. This is the second physical drive. When checking permissions and attempting to change them to the correct ones for the folder, I can't change them. I've tried through the GUI and the terminal as root. Neither way will change the permissions.I've stepped back and checked the permissions on the physical drive the files are stored on. I am having the same issues with the drive itself. How in the world can I change the permissions either on the drive or the folder? Is there something I should do as far as the drive's mounting?
