I would do a little more homework, but I already did a lot only to get stuck here, and I need to solve this sooner rather than later.
I have already: installed devel and desktop-devel and given up about 350mb of diskspace to
Code: zypper in -t pattern devel_C_C++
Only to still not have the make function available. If that install was unecessary, I'm hoping there's a simple uninstall version of that line.
Reading what it's saying, it sounds like I may have all the right kit but it needs a nudge in the direction of the kernel??
I recently upgraded my SuSE 11.2 to KDE4.4 from "download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.2/". Most things run fine, however the "Akonadi Control Center" does not appear in my KDE "System Settings". Akonadi itself seems to run, at least Contact uses it for the addresses.
I searched for all "akonadi" packages, but I didn't find ones which I do not have installed.
I am running OpenSuSE 11.2 64bit which was upgraded from 11.1. When I moved to OS 11.2, I found out the hard way about VMWare not working. Then tried to remove it and fix it myself.

Other than rebuilding my box, how can I recover from this?
Has anyone succeeded in coercing either banshee or rhythmbox to play "restricted" media? On my 11.3 install, I have all the packages from the "one-click" install that takes 49 clicks to find on the new wiki structure ... Playback works correctly in mplayer, gnome-mplayer, and smplayer. VLC works also, ... yawn ....
This is the third consecutive release (AT BEST) where this stuff is badly broken! By badly broken, I mean that installing all the needed software and codecs does not appear to be the only requirement. I was able to get it working in 11.1 and 11.2, but only via a hit and miss series of un-install the packages, reinstall one by one ... making offerings of fatty sheep ... reinstalling again .... performing the second part of the ring cycle for the neighbours cat ... remove the codecs again .... install again ... wow ... it's working ... set the entire system to ro ... sing for the cat again!
Does anyone have any insight as to why gstreamer is SOOOOOOO foobared in OpenSUSE? Can anyone articulate a series of steps that will actually get the desired result? BTW, getting this stuff working in FC13 is trivial. Add the fusion repo and install the codecs! I remember a better day in SuSE land when one added the packman repo and installed the codecs ...
After been convinced by an exchange student from Nashville I am hosting here in Germany I went into openSuse 11.2. I installed and got openSuse 11.2 to work. I must admit, that I was very impressed. It is more than 10 years that I tried a UNIX system and Linux was quite a cryptic thing. First some additional drivers had to be installed to get MP3 to play. However Internet access was possible with cable but the system failed in recognizing the WLAN.
Here is my system: HP Compaq nc4000 OpenSuse 11.2 (i586) KDE 4.3.1 "release 6" Wireless Network Atheros AR5212
I have looked through some posts but must admit, that I did not understand much of that. I Am willing to learn, however I do not see myself compiling some drivers. If you could tell me which URL could be used for dloading or installing via Yest, If more sophisticated solutions, than I will have to ask my student to do it for me, but he should learn German and learn more about German lifestile in German Bars.
I have a box already has openSuse 11 32bits installed. I want to replace it with openSuse 11 64 bits. When I insert the openSuse 11 64 bits CD, I got error message "this is a 32 bit computer. Can not use 64 bit software". so How do I wipe out the old OS (32 bits), and install new OS (64 bits)?
I am trying to install openSuse 11.2 from netinstall disk into a vmware virtual machine under vmware server 2 (free edition). The installation process starts ok, but later i receive a warning indicating that the opensuse repository can not be found. (download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/oss /)I have checked the network setup and works perfectly, also i can ping download.opensuse.org from console successfully.
I used KDE3 with 11.0 with some KDE4 apps till I needed some applications from the KDE4 factory tree and mistakenly left the repository active. Next time the online update also updated most of the applications I would rather keep, and as a result the KDE3 disappeared from the KDM login choices. So I have two questions:1. how to enable users to select KDE3 at login (currently I have to select failsafe mode and run startkde manually)2. how to replay back an update I didn't want to have?
Perhaps a combination of the above: can I upgrade to OS11.2 and keep KDE3? (please don't tell me to switch to KDE4, I acknowledge and appreciate the effort and the improvements that KDE4 got, but it's still not a replacement for KDE3 - there are so many simple things which are impossible in the new version)
I'm looking for a UPS for my computer setup. This one looks interesting:CyberPower CP800AVR 800VA 450W. The docs say: 'HID compliant USB port enables full integration with built-in power management and auto shutdown features of Windows, Linux and Mac OS X' Unfortunately I don't really know what that means? Will it work with OpenSUSE? My machine is not very power hungry buts its not light-weight. It's a quad-core system with 5 SATA disks, 2 burners, a 30" display plus some smaller accessories. It takes about 2-3 mins to shutdown due to all the services I have running on it, so to be safe I need a little margin of shutdown time from there.
Anyone used this UPS? or something similar? APC and Cyberpower are generally easy to get and have models which I can afford.
i just installed a new wireless device from encore electronics(802.11g Wireless PCI Adapter ENLWI-G2) but it deadlocks openSUSE 11.2 when i start the networking module in YaST. It also deadlocks(Freezes up) when i tried reinstalling suse. can someone help me, has anyone got this device to work? I also tried Fedora 12... it manages to see my wlan and posts the mac address of the card.. but it also locks up while trying to use it or configure it

Toshiba notebook is set up to triple boot win7, mepis 8.5 and os 11.3.Recent update of os11.3 left system with boot failure, "file not found".I booted mepis and used utility to reinstall grub, but no joy. Appeared to install ok but on reboot, sda5 identified as 'mepis' not os11.3 and would not boot. Win7 & mepis boot ok.
Next, booted live Parted Magic and repaired as per another thread here, but again, no joy.NONE of the systems will boot.Rebooted mepis live cd and reinstalled grub again. Sda5 still identified as mepis and will not boot. Win7 & mepis boot ok.
i've benn reading for a while so that i choose to use opensuse as my linux but i need internet on my computer and the only way i can get it is throuth my CDU680 modem of franklin and cmotech, but i dont understand the xplanation of other forums and i would like one step by step of my case. I use open suse 11.3
I downloaded the latest stable release from the opensuse download site and when I try to install it, it fails. Basically, the installation reaches 50% and then I get a message : Failed copying image file to hard disk. The hard disk on my PC is 18GB and the installer suggests 10.7 GB for /home and 7.2 GB for /root. I read somewhere that /root needs to be allocated a min of 10 GB, but the installer does not let me change the size /root to more that 7.2 GB. how can I go about installing it?
I've just migrated to Fedora after 2 years of Ubuntu, and I'm rather happy with it, except for one problem left. When I launch a windows program through wine (I've only tried games yet), it won't go fullscreen. I tried everything I fond on the internet: disabling compiz, enabling/disabling virtual desktop, but no matter what, my game is still on a tiny window. I tried switching my resolution to the one of the game, it doesn't change anything. And pressing alt+Enter doesn't change anything either, except sometimes crashing the game. The 32 bits libraries for xorg-nvidia are installed, and I don't see what could cause this problem.
install the linux-vdso.so in my ubuntu 9.04 64bits. I need it because multiple applications that I have programmed need it due to an inclusion of a 3rd party software. As I have seen this library is only available to fedora suse and other rpm OS. Should I install in my ubuntu machine? and how? I already tried to use the getlibs and tried to downloaded it but I didn't find it anywhere.
Actually, it's recommended to compile (and build) wine 32bits. But, it's possible to build Wine in 64bits and 32bits with the same sources. The solution is explain in this page : Building a shared WoW64 setup.
With this solution, if Wine 64bits is installed on your system, you can create a 32bits wineprefix by this command :
To use this command, you must to compile and make wine twice in 2 differents folder, like explain :
How to compile and make twice without problem in the "rules" files in the debian folder when i want to build a package?
The problem i have is that after sucessfully installing Ubuntu 10.04 (64bits) when i start my PC and i get to grub2 and select Ubuntu it will get stuck at a blank screen with only an "_" flickering on the top of the screen. At first i thought "Hey, maybe it just takes a while to boot" but after letting it sit there for about 20 minutes and nothing happening i decided to restart my PC. And then the same thing happened like 5 times. BUT on the 6th try it booted sucessfully! And everything was working perfectly but as soon as i restarted my PC i would encounter the same problem.
Details I should probably mention that i had the exact same problen on the install process. I tried with a CD i had burned the image on and it would show me install options (Try and install, install, etc.) But when i selected either one of those i would get the "_" flickering and nothing ever happening. Then i tried it with a DVD thinking that the CD was the issue. Same thing. After that i tried with a USB drive and i would get the same exact problem, but on the retry on the USB drive the planets aligned in such a way that i actually got the Virtual Ubuntu loaded from my USB drive.
So it installed sucessfully and when i restarted it i got to GRUB and selected Linux and the "_" would start showing and nothing ever happens. On the <random number> of restarts it actually launched and it picked up my audio, video cards, other NTFS drives, etc. But when i restarted i would get the problem again. I even went trough the whole install process AGAIN (getting it to read from the USB flash drive, starting on Ubuntu) and still no consistent results. Though on the second install it didn't pick up my audio hardware nor my other NTFS drives until the second restart where i was able to use Ubuntu normally. I even upgraded what it told me to upgrade. (now i have two "different" versions of ubuntu on grub, each with it's own safe mode only different by a .24 and a .25 on their names) and right after upgrading and restarting it booted immediately. But after that i'm getting the same issue over and over again.
Recently I installed Open Arena but didn't had time to play it at the moment. Well I had some time to play and it run very well except for absolute no bots at all. Tried all ways Single player and Multi-player, Skirmish add bots buttons are active but they don't work. Here the terminal output: (I simply opened the game and close it, if you want me to enter single player or other options just tell me I'll post the output)

SSH server work, ping work, oracle11g server works, but on one of mi servers one port of a application that develp here can be reach, the port is 2809 (corba). If i do telnet xxx 2809 on the machine, port is responding, but if i do the same in any machine in LAN, dont respond. This only happend on one server!!! the other just work fine I have all firewall disabled!!
I have an old Lenovo PC on which I have Debian 8.3 64bit with no desktop environment. It has an onboard Marvell 88E8056 NIC that SHOULD be able to run at 1Gb/s but the driver (SKY2) that is loaded will only do 100Mb/s.
So I try to get this thing to work with a new driver.
For that it seems I have to download it from here: ....
There I download Linux_v10.93.3.3.tar.zip which has directions on how to compile and install the SK98LIN driver.
Since I never done that before, I found this on youtube : ....
But where for him it does compile, for me it breaks off with saying missing version.h :
.<snip> . Check kernel header versiongrep: /lib/modules/3.16.0-4-amd64/source/include/linux/version.h: No such file or directory ./functions: line 1117: [: !=: unary operator expected grep: /lib/modules/3.16.0-4-amd64/source/include/linux/version.h: No such file or directory ./functions: line 1126: [: !=: unary operator expected (Kernel:3.16.0 == Header:) [ OK ] Check kernel functions (Changed: nothing) [ OK ] Compile the kernel (error) [ failed ]
An error has occurred during the compile proces which prevented the installation from completing. Take a look at the log file install.log for more information. Installation of package failed. root@debian:~/setup#
