OpenSUSE :: 11.3 Crashes Very Often When Change Desktop Background?
Aug 14, 2010
It has been about a month since I installed openSUSE 11.3 (64bit, Gnome), and overall it is better than 11.2, but I have had some stability issues that I did not have with 11.2.
1. openSUSE 11.3 crashes very often when I change desktop background. I haven't experiment with it but it happens with downloaded images.
2. Changing monitor environment makes openSUSE to freeze. Fresh boot with external monitors connected usually works, but plugging & unplugging monitors usually makes openSUSE freezing. (I have to force power down)
3. Suspend makes openSUSE freeze a lot. Usually one suspension works, if I re-suspend it, it usually freezes.
I was wondering if these are common with 11.3 or I'm the only one who is having this.

After installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

It takes about 30 seconds for the desktop to 'fully load'. When I login I see my background, but nothing else. Then you wait 30 seconds and you see the panels appear. Is there any way to fix this lag, and make it an instant load? Cause really it should not take that long to load a panel with not really anything on it.

Up until KDE4 I could select a different image for each of the 4 virtual desktops. Now I tried Suse11.1 KDE and it seems like there is no such option. I can change the background image allright, but all 4 desktops have the SAME image.

How do I get it to display a different desktop background for each desktop? I'm sure I saw this option somewhere, but I can't find it again.
Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?

I've had this problem for a long time (since I first installed 11.2) but I hoped KDE SC 4.4 would fix it for me. Since it didn't, I decided to make a thread about it. I have a really weird problem ─ I can only set svg graphics as desktop backgrounds. I can't put any kind of png/jpg (haven't tried others) picture as a wallpaper. All I get is a black background. The weather backgrounds etc. work perfectly fine. I can create a svgz file in Inkscape and insert a png image in it but that's kind of a stupid workaround for a problem. Has anyone encountered a problem like this?

I can't imagine no one else has run into this problem, but I tried several search phrases and couldn't find anything. When I bring up the "Appearance Preferences" window and change the background, NOTHING happens! If you log out and log back in, then the new background is displayed. But surely this is not the way it should work. Shouldn't the background change immediately?

My screen saver crashes.Even trying to look at the screensaver in the desktop settings crashes. The crashhandler says "This backtrace appears to be of no use. I'm running SUSE 11.3 32-bit and have run into an issue with the KDE Plasma Desktop crashing after login. I've submitted a bug report with the KDE folks, but thought it might be OpenSuSE specific. Details from the my KDE bug report [URL].. is as follows:

I had openSuse 11.3 KDE4.4.4 installed and used the 1-Click install to get the nVidia drivers. However, this gave me the problems with Amarok and other applications crashing. I switched the system repos to use packman but that didn't help.
The solution on the forums seemed to be either recompile with an old nVidia driver or upgrade to KDE4.5 as most people were reporting to not see it under 4.5.
Upgrading seemed to be the easiest method, especially as there appeared to be a stable repo now.
I upgraded and now plasma-desktop crashes on login! Is getting the old nVidia driver my only option now?
zypper lr -d
Code:
# | Alias | Name | Enabled | Refresh | Priority | Type | URI | Service
--+--------------------------+-----------------------+---------+---------+----------+--------+---------------------------------------------------------------------------+--------
1 | KR45 | KR45 | Yes | Yes | 99 |

I am trying to get an extended desktop (laptop monitor + extra) on my OpenSuse 11.3 system (64). I use kde 4.4.
It used to work on my OS 11.0. Here is the deal now:
- I use NVIDIA G2 driver from the OS repositiory
- laptop screen works fine, including compositing, 3D etc
I run nvidia-xconfig to generate an xconfig file. Everything still works fine (even after x reboot):
Code:
Next I login as root and open the run nvidia-setting program. There the second monitor is detected. I enable it as extended desktop and check: enable Xinerama.
I reboot.
Problems:
- compositing is off, I cannot enable it
- if I move my mouse cursor to the second screen, it only stays there for a second and vibrates enormously.
- if I use a window on the 2nd screen. X crashes
Things I can add/remove from the xorg.conf?
Now the xorg.conf is as follows:
Code:

I originally have Ubuntu Lucid on my machine. I just installed opensuse 11.2 on another partition without bootloader installed. So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse
Code:
menuentry "openSUSE 11.2 (i586) (on /dev/sda2)" {
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,2)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 9ac05ede-e7c4-47f3-b55b-66d5844$
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop root=/dev/sda2
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop
}
which parameters should I add?

I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4 (i586) with KDE Desktop 4.6.0 "release 6" on my IBM ThinPad X40. And I have trouble with getting new plasma widgets by internet. To be more concrete, every time I try to install new widget (first I want to view details of that), so when I'm pushing on blue button called "Details", BOOM and my plasma desktop crashes and after refreshing it generates the dump file for reporting to developers.
As this is quite an annoying bug, I've decided to report it, so I've installed all the necessary debugging tools, generated the complete bug report and sent it to KDE team. After this, I've got mail with link on KDE bug tracking system [URL] and found a lot of people being in the same trouble. So, one guy - Dario Andres (I think he's from KDE team) says: "The bug and the fix are in "libattica", may be your version of that library is not the latest. (or there wasn't a release including the fix)" and though after his comment there's a dozen of other replies with the same problem, all of them are marked as the duplicated bug and has no answer.
Well, even I know that my operating system is always up to dated, anyway I've checked that library version on my computer:
giorgi@linux-oary:~> rpm -qa|grep libattica
libattica0-0.2.0-5.1.i586
And I've double checked on the Internet and this is the latest version of this library. So, it's obvious that this BUG 261530 has not solved by this library.

I got a new desktop and figured this would be a great oppurtunity to update to 11.3 (from 11.2) while migrating files.. However I have had lots of problems with it, right of the bat. My first installation got messed up right after it was done, so I had to redo everything. Now the system boots up all fine but I am experiencing crashes every once in a while. By crashes I mean nothing works; the system monitor graphs freeze, the clock freezes, system doesnt respond to key strokes. The only remedy is then to "force an unexpected reboot" (ref: IT Crowd). I have a feeling that it has to do with Yast or something related to Yast, as it is the only common denominator between the crashes so far. However the system doesnt crash everytime I start Yast so I cant really say anything conclusively..
I have also realised that when I attach a secondary screen the graphics get kinda screwed as well.. if that makes any sense... Here are my system details: Dell Vostro Desktop with Core i7 64bit processor
8 x 2.8Ghz
6gig ram
graphics card: GeForce GT220
What could be the problem here? btw let me know if anyone wants to see logs from /var/log/messages

Been trying to get mac4lin to work, and in the process, I attempted uninstalling, rebooting, then reinstalling gtk-engines-pixbuf. This has now screwed my system so that the background is a light grey and any attempt to change the wallpaper just makes X crash, forcing me to Ctrl Alt Backspace. I'd rather avoid a reinstall of the system since I have it customized to my needs, so is there a solution to this? I tried reinstalling the pixbufs package, but no dice.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix on my Gateway LT3103u. I noticed shortly into using it that it has a graphics bug every so often. Especially when I change the background image. Everything will change to a warped mix of colors and pixels. Everything is affected. My mouse, the bar at the top of the screen, text and all. My netbook runs on an AMD Athlon 64-bit processor with ATI Radeon X1270 HyperMemory up to 256MB graphics.
So far I have tried reinstalling, and even the 64bit desktop edition which had the same problem. Ive noticed that it freaks out when i scroll too quick, when changing background images, and on certain websites. Then other times its completely random. When it happens it looks similar to these: [URL]

I have spent the most part of 5 hours trying to fix this issue. For some reason I cannot change the background image to any of mt .jpg wallpaper files (and .png files). I've tried using the Ubuntu-Tweak application, but I end up getting a purple screen (default) or a black screen (default). So then I tried using the terminal method by making the Appearance window appear when I would log out. That works, except when I go to use my background image, it shows as a question mark for the image preview, and the icon for the file is a gray box. All while doing this my background images that I tested are all in the /usr/share/backgrounds location. Please help! I really want to get rid of the default images and use my images... :/ My desktop/screen in 1440x900, and most my background images are around that size. They work with my regular desktop for my account.

I've been messing with settings of nautilus via
Code:
"Edit" > "Backgrounds and Emblems..."
and selected a background image.
And from that moment on, nautilus crashes (reloads) on almost every right click, menu opening, and almost any action, nautilus should do (as a file manager). Running Nautilus from Terminal and observing the output left me with a blank output ... no errors, no warnings, just reset.
