I recently swapped out my old network switch (10/100) for a Netgear GS105 gigabit switch. With the exception of my Fedora 10 laptop all the rest successfully connect at gigabit speeds. But my laptop (with an Intel Corporation 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03)) will only connect at 100Mbps. If I look in the logs for my network card here is what I get:
Ive been trying everything possible, and cant get this Intel card to connect. Here are the details Centos 5.5 Kernel 2.6.18-194.el5 Intel 82577LM Gigabit on dell laptop e6410 Broadband router with gateway 10.54.7.1 My network is 10.54.7.* linux sees the exact card in the configuration utility. If I choose dhcp, and try to bring up teh device, I get "no network, cable unplugged?" error If I configure static ip for eth0 like

The interface will come up (seen in ifconfig) but cant ping the gateway. At one point it did work... I just cant get it back - Ive reinstalled like 4 times... in hopes Id catch something different, no luck. My network serices about 10 pcs many of them centos linux - no problem using static or dhcp with my router- I just got this new laptop and cant get ths card to work.
I just installed ubuntu as my primary OS, but I have the disk with XP on it and I don't want to go back, but I need faster network connectivity. I have a T60p with Intel Gigabit jacked into my Gigabit router which also has my desktop (running XP) and my NAS. If I FTP files from my NAS (or SCP), I get transfer speeds around 250-500 KB/s (which is not very fast). On this same switch, from my XP desktop I get transfer speeds around 12 MB/s. I get the same speeds using my 802.11n card (Atheros) as with the ethernet NIC (250-500 KB/s).The drivers for the ethernet card and the atheros card are e1000e and ath9k respectively.I have disabled IPv6. Since the problem occurs using either interface, I am just going to concentrate on fixing it for the Ethernet interface (since I believe it to be a systemwide problem).

Clearly my card is running at Gigabit, but why the bad transfer speeds? I am using filezilla for FTP (technically FTPES). I closed every other program. My CPU utilization does seem high and I wonder if this is part of the problem. I had no problems with throughput using either interface in Windows XP just one week ago.
I have an ASUS P5Q PRO motherboard with an integrated Atheros AR8121/AR8113 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Adapter.I installed Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid" 64bit Kernel version 220.127.116.11 I have read that the driver isn't in the kernel, but there's a strange thing :
First if I try to run lspci from command line it doesn't reports Atheros Ethernet Controller.
Second If I try to run lshw -C network from command line it doesn't reports Atheros Ethernet Controller.
Third if I run ifconfig it only returns my loopback address.
Can I suppose that my Ethernet Intel Gigabit Controller is broken or that Atheros driver is missing?
I am running CentOS 5.3.The NIC on my motherboard does not support gigabit, so I bought a gigabit network card. I installed the network card and configured it via system-config-network. Everything seems to work fine as long as I keep a cable plugged into the original NIC. The original NIC works just fine if it is the only one with a network connection, but as soon as I uplug the original NIC I can no longer ping nor connect to the server via the gigabit NIC.
The original NIC is eth0, the new NIC is eth1. Is there something I need to do to tell the system that eth0 is not required or something? I've never encountered an issue like this before...
I am looking for a gigabit network card for my centos 5.4 server. I am looking for something known to work well with linux. I have been on the bestbuy site and I found a DLink (DGE-530T) card with support for linux from the vendor but after reading feedback from users with that card I am not so sure it is linux friendly. I am now thinking of buying online.
I just kickstarted this box - I used eth0 and had no issues. After booting - eth0 is not available/present. This was not an issue in 5.2. This is a dell 4600 - both the 100mb intel and gig broadcom are onboard. I am about to try a different kernel. This is not a show stopper - it's plugged into 100m switch and I can just use eth1 - but I am curious as to what is different and why this no longer works.
I have a Netgear GA311 PCI Gigabit Adapter. Any chance it might work with CentOS? It is not one of the cards listed when I do "NEW" Ethernet Adapter from the System Network menu. Maybe there is compatible choice?
I've just set up a PC with CentOS 5.3 runing on near identical hardware to an existing 5.2 machine. Motherboard is Asus M2A-VM which I discover by chance generally works very well with CentOS. Ethernet is on board Nvidia.The older machine just did run gigabit speed without any intervention at all, rather to my surprise. The newer machine insists on running at 100 Mbit which is annoying as it is connected to a NAS through a gigabit dumb switch.
The obvious difference between the two is that ethtool on the older machine says that supported ports are TP, and so the port is TP. Whereas the newer machine says that supported ports are TP or MII and insists on running MII. I cannot change this with ethtool -s eth0 port tp. Perhaps not too surprisingly, mii-tool says that the supported speeds range up to 100 Mbit.
Just did a clean install on a Dell Latitude E6400 of Slackware 13.1 and, for the most part, all is working great. Got wicd installed and wireless came right up, nvidia drivers installed and video is fantastic, but for some reason my wired connection isn't happening. The device is detected, but I can't get an IP.

I'm having issues with Ubuntu 8.04 to see my Intel 82574L ethernet card. Ubuntu is not detecting it at all.
I downloaded the drivers from
copied it to the server, untarred, make install ,and now i'm getting notifications that kernel-devel is not installed. I installed linux-headers from the install cd ( ihave the alternate and server one), but i cannot find any kernel-devel or linux-kernel-devel. The driver still does not want to build after installing linux-headers.
I need to use Ubuntu 8.04 due to some specific requirements, do i need the network cards to work.
NIC: Intel 82574L Gigabit mobo network card Issue: After the server has been up for a random amount of time, the network connection is lost. Attaching a console and looking at ifconfig I see a large number of dropped packets and collisions.

I have been able to load CentOS on my computer. I have the motherboard DG41TY from Intel. It seems that the only problem I have is my network card does not work. On the Intel site there is a link to download the network driver for Linux. I did that. It's an rpm file. realtek-r8169-kmp-default-8.004.00_18.104.22.168_0.21-0.i586.rpm is the name. When i right click and say install it tried to connect to the internet for some thing and fails. of coarse it does there not loaded yet. I added a second nic that cent did recognize and got me online. I want to load the on board driver and remove the add on card. When I try to load now I get missing dependencys.
Just a heads up to others. There is a kernel regression in the 2.6.35 kernel with regard to, some but not all Intel Gigabit ethernet adapters using the e1000e driver. After an otherwise successful upgrade from fedora 13 to 14, no ethernet connection could be made while using the upgraded 2.6.35 kernel that comes with fedora 14. The 2.6.34 fedora 13 kernels work fine and were fortunately still available after the upgrade.
I have personally seen the identical malfunction on all 2.6.35 kernels I've tried with both Arch and Aptosid and have seen similar reported problems on the Gentoo forum. In each case, going back to a 2.6.34 or upgrading to a 2.6.36 kernel solved the problem so this is almost certainly a kernel issue. My onboard Intel Gigabit ethernet adapter is:
I've installed from the CD the Centos version 5.5. When I try to connect to Internet I can't because I received some errors. I've the Intel Corporation 82801CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller also a wireless slot (I've the wireless card DWL-G650+) When I turn on the pc and I go to "Ethernet Device", I see set: peth0 (Intel Corporation 82801CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM) ETHERNET CONTROLLER) and also set "Bind to MAC address": fe:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff I've set manually the IP address (I'm under router). Status is "Active" but can't go on the Net. When I change to "eth0 (Intel EtherExpress/100 driver)...sometimes become "Active" an other times said that the MAC address is different or to check the cable because can't find the IP. I have spent them with Fedora and liked it a lot. Today I decided to install CentOS as this looks like something I would like to be using in the future. However a problem I could not solve came right at me after the first boot.
I have one eth0 device which is onboard lan and that was correctly recognised and activated. The second device is F5D5055 Belking USB Gigabit ethernet adapter. There was no problem with it whatsoever under Fedora. According to all the info it should be automatically recognised on kernel 2.6.14 and later. However when I plug it into the USB port, I can see its correct name in the device manager but it is not recognised as a network device. I have configured my Fedora as a firewall/router for my lan and definitely want to use that interface.
Hopefully without needing to do anything in the realm of compiling kernel, cause that is where my half a day long attempt to fix the problem left me.
I've been trying to install 5.5 here for the past few days, first from USB and now from the CDs, with no success. The problem occurs when I reboot after installing. After the BIOS has done it's thing I'm faced with a blank screen with a blinking cursor at the top left of the screen.
Initially I assumed that this was due to the intel driver problem which is reported in the release notes as a known issue, and the PC I'm installing on has intel graphics. However I have now done a text install and still have the same issue. I'm able to boot up the system using the CentOS live CD, which encounters no issues, and it mounts the local system no problem. After unmounting and remounting to get write access I'm able to change the device entry in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to have the Option "DDC" "false" entry. I can also see that the runlevel is set to 3 in /etc/inittab, still I get the blank screen on attempting to boot.
Any ideas on what might be wrong here? It really sounds like the intel driver problem people have described, and yet I can't even boot in text mode so that doesn't seem to be the case here. Could there be something wrong with the bootloader?
working to sort out the damn wireless for too long. Mine in cent05 5.2 . network manager is on and I can see the icon on tray. It list all the wireless connections too, but just won't connect. WPA encry is disabled. further details below:
Actually, the title I was looking for was Belkin Gigabit Ethernet ExpressCard not seen on Dell Precision M6500 with CentOS 5.5 _when system boots with no link on this card_. When I boot this system with a cable connected to the Ethernet port, the card shows up (dmesg, lspci 0e:00.0 and ifconfig). When I boot it with nothing connected, it's like it doesn't exist. I know I could make it work with a loopback plugged in at all times, but am looking for a more graceful solution. Here are messages logs from when it's recognized
I'm running a wired gigabit card using the atl1c driver. It works fine, but I don't get gigabit, only 100 Mbps. I have a gigabit switch and other Ubuntu machines on my network are gigabit. Is there any way this could be a software/configuration issue, or is the only likely explanation that my wires are of sub-par quality somewhere?
I recently did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 on my machine. It previously had windows 7 on it and everything worked flawlessly. Now the gigabit LAN connection only connects at 10Mb/s under Ubuntu. I installed a virtual machine with windows 7 and there it connects at 1Gb/s.
