Networking :: UDP Thrashing 224.0.0.54 (140 Times Every Second)

Jan 12, 2010

My ADSL router NAT's any computer behind it here at home. I have a PC or two a Sun ultra10 and ultra5 and E450 etc.

The problem is my PC reports via "tcpdump -i eth0" that
22:54:47.035683 IP icute.pelnet.net.50683 > 224.0.0.56.46144: UDP, length 1292
is going on 140 times every second.

How do I prevent this from continuing and why is it happening? If possible I don't want to invoke iptables as my NAT router does a fine firewall job.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - What Process Start Thrashing HD

Nov 20, 2010

ubuntu 10.10 At times something starts thrashing the HD. Often after the computer has been taken out of Suspension. The whole things slows down and stays slow. This can be fixed by logging off (which takes quite a while under this condition while the HD light stays on, solid) and logging back on. Then the system becomes responsive, with only HD light flickers. Anyway, I can't determine what process is doing the thrashing. System Monitor doesn't show any memory problems, and neither do top or htop. htop shows plenty of swap space available, and memory usage is on par with what it looks like when there is no thrashing. Is there some tool that can display what processes are running the HD so hard?

General :: Hard Drive Thrashing With EXT4

Nov 1, 2010

I'm dual booting Ubuntu 9.04 and 10.04 on an ASUS P5VD2-MX SE mobo with 3 hard drives, a couple of DVD writers and a multi memory card reader (USB).

The hard drives are:-
1 250Gb SATA MAXTOR STM325082
1 80Gb PATA HITACHI IC35L090AVV207-0
1 80Gb PATA MAXTOR 6Y080P0

9.04 lives on 2 ext3 partitions of the 250G SATA
10.04 on the 2 ext4 partitions of the 80G MAXTOR
The HITATCHI has 1 ext4 partition mounted as a common data area for each O/S
The 250G drive has GRUB Legacy in the MBR with its files in a small ext3 primary partition chainloading the 2 O/S's, GRUB Legacy for 9.04 and GRUB2 for 10.04. It also contains the common SWAP partition (primary)

When I boot into 9.04 everything works as expected with as far as I can see no unusual disk activity even when the ext4 data partition and the 2 10.04 ext4 partitions are mounted. When 10.04 is booted however, after about 5 minutes (irrespective of whether or not the other partitions are mounted) I see the hard drive activity light come on and stay permanently on. The system monitor shows nothing unusual. dstat doesn't give any clues either. I've tried running iotop but it fails with a missing CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT error.

Is this a known problem with ext4, should I rebuild 10.04 onto ext3 partitions? Are there some special ext4 mount parameters I should use? (I simply copied the fstab lines from 9.04 and just changed ext3 to ext4). I've read that the journaling process(es?) for ext4 by default commonly access the drive(s) every 2-3 secs but that should just cause a flicker surely.

Is this something to do with 'nepomukservices' that seems to be taking a fair amount of cpu time? Not used to KDE 4 so maybe this is normal.

Fedora :: Rhythmbox Thrashing Hard Drive On Startup

Apr 29, 2011

I'm using the rhythmbox installation that ships with fedora for my music playback. Every time is start the darn thing up though I can hear my external disk (media library) being accessed really hard. I assume this is part of some sort of library self check and probably a check for new music(?). So this got me wondering on how rhythmbox keeps up with my media library and if there is a way to make it more! I assume that atm rhythmbox just checks every file it now in my library for 'something' and at that also checks for new files and folders in the library directory. So I guess It would be quite a boost in startup performance (disk thrashing) to just skip the existing files checks. Right? Well, I obviously don't know how rhythmbox ticks so be nice.

But before I do that, what added value does it bring to the party? It seems like it's mainly involved with desktop indexing, which I never use (does anyone?).

Ubuntu :: Disk Thrashing/apps Freezing For Approx 30 Seconds

Sep 8, 2010

I've been having this issue since at least 9.10. I'm randomly encountering disk thrashing and application freezing which lasts around 30 seconds. Some applications seem to encounter this more often than others. Firefox and Picasa are pretty reliable at reproducing the issue. It also happens often when I'm using Transmission. CPU usage is not unusually high during the 'thrashing' sessions. Running iotop hasn't shed any light on the problem either. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this or maybe someone could give me some clues. I'm running a dell inspiron 530 with ubuntu 10.04 64bit. I have 4gb of ram. Ubuntu Servers :: Crashed - None Of The Sites Were Responding - Sounded Like It Was Thrashing The Hard Drive

Aug 2, 2011

I have a ubuntu 11.04 LAMP server at home.

Its runnign a few small sites on a drupal CMS.

This morning I found none of the sites were responding. The server itself sounded like it was thrashing the hard drive.

It wasnt responding to the FTP client or SSH connections. Web pages just sat there like they were loading very slowly but never actually loaded.

How can I find out what went wrong. I dont have a massive amount of experience with linux, particularly the server variant.

Its worried me a little that the drupal report shows several page not found errors like someone (a bot maybe) was trying to see what php setup files they could access.

Code:
sudo -s
echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf

Still not working right. My wifi works ok at first...gets slower and slower...and eventually times out on everything. At that point, I have to restart the computer so it can work normally for a short time. Works totally fine when wired. Works totally fine wired or wireless on my Windows 7 partition. Both wired and wireless worked fine when I was using 10.10.

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow DNS Lookup Times In 11.04?

Jun 4, 2011

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 in a dual boot environment on a spare laptop( Dell Inspiron 6000 ) I have other machines using older distro's of Ubuntu but do not have them all on line... utility costs are ridiculous here..anyway.... I found some optimization tips for Firefox and those have been done and I did find earlier information about this or a very similar problem but all the suggestions mentioned there are already in place here network wide.. Basically what is happening is this: When a web site is opened from the browser in the lower left hand of the screen it displays "Looking up www.google.com" or what ever url was entered.

I know Win is not a good comparison and I haven't gotten any additional Ubuntu boxes on line yet but Win seem unaffected by this.

Any recommendations as to what I should try next?? I have DNS server information stored in the router using Google Public DNS and Open DNS as a backup and uPNP is disabled. Seems like the program (Ubuntu) is plenty fast even on this Celeron based machine but the time taken to look up DNS data is a lot slower than anticipated.

Ubuntu Servers :: Give Power Users Ability To Access All Of Their Folders Without Thrashing Security.

Feb 8, 2011

So, I am looking to implement an FTP server with Isolated Client accounts/directories where a client can only access what's in their directory. I also need to provide my internal user's (content managers) the ability to upload, delete, etc from all of the Client accounts. The simple part is creating the secure client accounts. It's a matter of changing DIR_MODE in adduser.conf to 700 or 770, creating a user, having the FTP server chroot them to their home directory, revoke/restrict shell/ssh access and maybe even slap on some ACL to prevent botched permissions. The hard part is figuring out how to give my power users the ability to access all of their folders without thrashing security.

My first thought was to put all of the client user-groups in a parent group and having my internal users inherit group permissions..but you can't have groups inside of groups. My second thought was to put all of the client users in the same group and prey that the FTP chroot is enough to keep them from poking around but then I have the problem of how do my internal users access other user directories if they are chrooted. Do I create a second server without chroot.do I create some weird nested homedir structure..I honestly have no idea how to satisfy both requirements (secure client accounts and privileged user accounts). I need my privileged users to authenticate against Active Directory via Likewise open, LDAP, etc and I don't care how the clients authenticate. Though, I would prefer to have both file and FTP-server level protection just to make sure no one can see the other client's data.

I can share my content with my xbox (except for the items on my external USB HD's - I am working on that and will post that question elsewhere) but when I have my PC's wired connection plugged into the switch I can not surf the web or check email. It gets stuck at resolving host and then times out. If I disconnect the pc from the switch it sometimes connects before it times out. Usually it is quicker if I reboot without the wired intranet connection.

Ubuntu Networking :: SSH / Telnet Connection To Desktop Within LAN Times Out

Desktop 2:
---Can ssh to any device.
---Can ssh to itself through localhost or 192.168.1.130.
---Any ssh(and telnet) aimed at this device times out.

All three devices recently had openssh-server installed yet only one seems deviant. I've been trying to ssh into desktop 2 to no avail, yes the machine is reachable, yes sshd is running, yes ufw is disabled, and no there is no external firewall that I know of. Ubuntu Networking :: Connection Times Out Loading Certain Sites

May 17, 2011

I had recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit) and I have trouble loading websites. I use a DSL (PPPoE) connection from NetworkManager to connect to the internet. Some sites like this forum site, stack overflow, etc. do not load. Firefox 4 says 'loading...' and then finally times out. I can ping these sites though.

I tried 'wget stackoverflow.com' and Lynx both timed out. wget sends out a request and waits a long time for response before timing out. These sites load perfectly well on my Fedora 14 (64-bit) & Windows XP installations and both these OSes have Firefox 4. From this I assumed that this is not a problem with Firefox (or any other browser for that matter) but it has got something to do with the network configuration.

I faced the same problem with Ubuntu 10.04 too. I use a Dell Inspiron N5010.

Networking :: Wireless Network Times Out - Will Not Restart Without Reboot

Nov 1, 2010

I had been manually starting my wireless network with "sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "my wireless router id". The network would start and work flawlessly for weeks at a time. I can't ask my wife to find the essid in the terminal and then start wireless manually when I'm not here. She hates and fears the terminal. So I downloaded gnome network manager for a point and click interface on gnome panel. The network would start fine but shut down after anywhere from one to six hours. It would then refuse to restart manually or otherwise. I completely uninstalled network manager and tried wicd instead. The same basic problem is happening. The network will restart if I reboot the computer. My system:

Desktop computer acting as proxy server for the internet. Internet connection is by a dial up modem. This computer uses a wireless pci card connected to a dedicated hub. This is for file sharing via nfs. The OS is ubuntu 9.10. My wife's computer sharing the internet using a proxy to my computer. File sharing via nfs and a wireless card. Also running ubuntu 9.10. This same basic system worked flawlessly under Ubuntu Hardy. My desktop was updated recently with new hardware which created the need to move to Ubuntu Karmic. Some hardware was too new for hardy to deal with.

Networking :: Wireless On Slack 12.2 Used To Work Now DHCPCD Times Out

Jul 14, 2011

I know questions of the form "wireless not working on <blank>" abound, but here is another! I can't cut and paste since I don't have a connection on the computer I am having trouble with but I will paraphrase the best I can.

lspci output:
0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel ... PRO/wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)
lsmod output (relavent line):
cfg80211 33680 3 iwlagn, iwlcore, mac80211

iwconfig shows wlan0 up and running, and iwlist scanning shows the router. I used to be able to just run dhcpcd wlan0 and connect, but now I get a

"timed out waiting for a valid DHCP server response"

Same deal running /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf (which might be the new way Slack connects to things).

Not sure if it's important, but I have a little indicator light on my laptop that tells me if wireless is running. Before I try dhcpcd, the light is on. After it times out, the light goes out and I have to redo everything (ifconfig wlan0 up etc....) in order to get the light back on.

Ubuntu Networking :: Server Randomly Times Out/Hangs/Disconnects

Jul 12, 2011

I have an Ubuntu 11.04 Server set up for my small office whose sole job is to run as a samba file server. The problem is that it randomly hangs. For example, I can connect the clients just fine, however if left idle it tends to take a few moments to work when you try to go back into the shared folder or drive. The client will behave like it is disconnected and is trying to search for the drive only to a few moments later, go right back to normal behavior.

If I ping this server while this is happening my requests will time out for a little while and then just start working. The same thing happens when I try to connect with Putty or through WebMin. One second its unreachable then the next its fine.I have already tried swapping out patch cables (which actually seemed to work for about 2 weeks) and I have patched it to an alternate port on the switch. The only thing I have not done at this time is to change the NIC.All the clients are running Win7 with the exception of two XP machines.Simply put, its like the machine just goes dormant for a while until you ping at it for a while to wake it back up.
