Hardware :: Setup Lm Sensors For Fan Control On Debian?

Mar 23, 2010

I have an issue with IBM XSeries 236M rack server running Debian Squeeze (2.6.32-3-vserver-amd64). I have installed "lm-sensors", "fancontrol", "acpid" and "acpi-support-base" packages. The problem is that I cannot get fan voltage and RPM displayed.

Command "sensors" will only display core temperatures:
root@xseries:/home/yang# sensors
k8temp-pci-00c3

Hardware :: Control Cpu Fan Speed - No Fan Control With BIOS - Acpi - Lm-sensors

I cannot get any fan information from 'lm-sensors' or 'sensors', I tried to run 'pwmconfig' and got this:

Code:

Code:

But I have no tools to control the fan speed from 'acpi'. in particular '/proc/acpi/fan' is an empty directory.

There are no fan info/controls in BIOS either.

I believe the fans do not work as fast as they should and I am trying to find a way to fix this before the cpu cores are melted down from overheating.

Ubuntu :: Sensors Not Working & CPU Speed Control?

Feb 21, 2010

I installed Karmic 64-bit on a new Phenom X4 Quad-Core PC. I've replaced the stock CPU cooler with a Cooler Master Hyper TX3, enabled all fan control settings in the BIOS, switched their profiles on silent, enabled the Cool n' Quiet option as well but my CPU fan is still noisy and seem to be running up to the max number of RPM, thus ignoring BIOS specifications. Besides this I can tell there is something wrong with it since even the CPU is on idle or with just the regular browsing, media player operations, PC sometimes freezes or is automatically rebooted .

I installed lm-sensors and went through all the sensors-detect operations (output attached to this post) but it doesn't show anything else but the CPU and HDD temperature which is always 40 Celsius degrees.

Ubuntu :: Lm-sensors Will Not Detect Any Sensors On HP Desktop

Mar 3, 2011

I can't for the life of me get the xsensors to work. I installed lm-sensors, the applet and also xsensors.I followed everything on this guide:URl... Went through it more than twice and a couple of restarts. I just can't figure out what's wrong. When I run "sensors" nothing is found. I ran the sensors configuration and it only found one device to add to /etc/modules. Please see the trace below, I would be very grateful if you can help me find the fix for this! The desktop is an HP Pavilion a730n with a Pentium4 processor.

After I ran sensors-detect, it said that İ needed k10temp module to be compiled, so I searched some forums and got required stuff. However, before compiling it, I added the gnome applet for sensors to the panel, and surprisingly it shows the cpu and motherboard temperatures. How reliable it is? Do I still need to compile k10temp? (I will compile it since I don't want to use a kernel from experimental repo). My kernel is 2.6.32-5-amd64, TestingCPU: AMD Phenom 2 x4 955 BE

Debian Configuration :: Backported Kernel Has Broken Hardware Sensors?

Aug 4, 2011

Having installed the 2.6.32 backport for Lenny, I have suddenly noticed that my Gkrellm doesn't display CPU and MB temperature anymore. Also, the smart sensors are inaccessible. Smartctl cannot access the readings even when run manually in a root terminal. I tried reinstalling lm-sensors and running sensor-detect again but it didn't help. What else needs to be updated to let the backported kernel see the hardware sensors?

Debian Hardware :: Dell T5400 Fan Controller And Temp Sensors

Nov 19, 2015

I recently assembled a Dell T5400 workstation. I'm getting some strange issues with this machine concerning fan controller.

-Only 2/4 motherboard fans are detected. All fans have RPM signal
-The only sensors that are reporting temperatures are for the memory modules, graphic card and disk but not from my Intel CPU's. This chip reports memory module temperatures as they tend to get pretty hot (DDR2-FBDIMM).
-Every time a fan speed gets reported with sensors command the bus freezes for a moment. Videos playback and audio chops for a moment and continue normally.

After removing module dell_smm_hwmon the sensors command executed without interrupting multimedia flow but no fan speeds were reported also.

As a temp solution I blacklisted the dell_smm_hwmon module and I solved the high fan noise problems and the bus freeze.

As it turns out i8k module for fan control is very buggy for some DELL models. Can I manually configure it somehow to work?

So to sum up the problems my problems are:

No CPU temperatures reporting. 2 Fans Speed and PWM controller info missing, and freezing the bus when probing to get speeds from those identified (dell_smm_hwmon module issues).

The object is to get fancontrol working in my setup.

I run debian testing with kernel 4.2.0-1-amd64.

Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.

Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'

When doing acpi -V i can see 2 thermal zones (0,1) with the first being 63C and the second always staying 26.8C. When I am doing a lot of processing the first thermal zone jumps up quickly. First, should that be the processor temp? Secondly, any way to get more accurate readings with lm-sensors(sensors-detect can find no monitoring items).

Debian Installation :: Fan Control In A Notebook ?

Apr 6, 2011

I got installed debian 6.0.1a en my compaq presario 1255 (amd-k6 with 160 Mb and 4.3 Gig), but I had to use expert install to be able to select lilo instead of grub2. I ended with a very basic system (it only uses 8Mb in console mode, and 28 Mb in fluxbox plus an xterm). It is still a very usable machine.

Previousy, I was able to install lenny 5.0.8 just with normal console mode install

I think that with lenny, the fan of the notebook (I mean the "external" one, I do not know if there is another in the micro) some times was on. but i do not think it works at any moment now with wheezy

I have been googling a couple of hours, but I am not getting a clear idea about fan and notebooks.

What have I to check? is it a module? something related to acpi?

Ubuntu :: LM Sensors - Cannot Find CPU Temperature

Ubuntu 10.10

Senors:
k10temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
temp1: +0.0C (high = +70.0C)
sensors-detect

Now follows a summary of the probes I have just done. Just press ENTER to continue:
Driver `k10temp' (autoloaded):
* Chip `AMD Family 10h thermal sensors' (confidence: 9)
No modules to load, skipping modules configuration.
Unloading i2c-dev... OK

There is a debugging panel on my motherboard, and I think that that displays the CPU temperature, although I am not sure.

Ubuntu :: Sensors Applet Always Shows 40C?

Apr 14, 2011

I installed lm_sensors via Synapt & the Sensors Applet on the panel, but that applet shows me an invariable 40C for 2 temperatures - 'CPU' & 'temp1'.Now I know it can't read the CPU temperature (long story, the CPU fan is hard-wired to 6v & there is no temperature feedback...) but it should be able to find a couple of other useful temperatures. The same PC in XP uses Speedfan which indicates plausible temperatures for (I think) Case & Hard Drive. (Temp2 & HD0 in the attached)I wonder what I have failed to do & why I cannot see Case or HD temps in Ubuntu? In terminal, I ran sensors-detect which went OK until the last bit where it said:

"~$ /etc/init.d/module-init-tools start Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8) utility, e.g. service module-init-tools start...etc" I don't follow that, but I have checked that I have it87 in both /etc/modules & in lib/modules/.../hwmon
