General :: Write (Through Or Back) Policy On RAID 1 / 10

Sep 2, 2009

I am trying to prepare my PowerEdge 2950 before CentOS 5.3 installation(web server). I have hardware RAID 1/10 so I will have 2 virtual disks(VD).
First VDRAID 1) - 2 physical disks
Second VDRAID 10) - 4 physical disks
What should be write policy for the VD(RAID 1) and for the VD(RAID 10)? I would have "/var" and maybe "/tmp" on RAID 10.

General :: Using Grep To Remove Line And Write Back To Same File?

Feb 10, 2010

remove a line starting with specific word with grep. Here is what I found

grep -v '^cc$' data.txt

Here I remove all lines with on 'cc' in that line. But I want the result write back to data.txt

I try several ways

grep -v '^cc$' data.txt > output.txt # works but to another file
echo `grep -v '^cc$' data.txt` > data.txt # didn't work, all carets gone, become one line
grep -v '^cc$' data.txt > data.txt # data.txt is empty after running this

How can I save the result of grep to the input file?

Ubuntu Installation :: Disk Space - Failes On A "E: Write Error - Write (28 No Space Left On Device)"

Jan 4, 2011

df -h [URL] I did the following command to find everything is in /usr or /var, then tracked it down to /usr/lib and /usr/share as the main offenders, but out of all the directories none are more than 1mb or so.

du -sh /* | sort -gr | head -n 5

I tried to uninstall firefox, which is what got me in this mess in the first place, the log claims it will remove ~240 mb but failes on a "E: Write error - write (28 No space left on device)" [URL] If I could juggle something onto an external hard drive so I can uninstall firefox I would be out of the wood. Failing that I believe a new install is in order.

CentOS 5 :: "hald" - IRQ Handler Type Mismatch For IRQ 12

Mar 21, 2009

I receive the following kernel trace message during the boot process after a fresh install of CentOS 5.2 x86_64. The trace occurs during the initialization of HALD in the boot process. From what I can tell things seem to be functioning properly, but I still would like to get rid of the noise for peace of mind.

Below is the pertinent information to date.

/var/log/messages:

With regards to hardware and operating system; all blades are identical with the exception of the amount of physical memory. The installation is done via kickstart against a frozen CentOS 5.2 x86_64 repository.

Server:Dell PowerEdge M600
Chassis:Dell PowerEdge M1000e
Processors:Dual Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5450 @ 3.00GHz

OS:CentOS release 5.2 (Final)

Some googling has revealed or suggested that it may be related to a keyboard ps/2 interrupt. I have tried booting with noapic and received the same results.

Below are the contents of the interrupt table after each boot.

/proc/interrupts booting apic:

My next step is to install Redhat 5.3 x86_64 on the next blade I free up to see if I receive the same error.

I am trying to write it to a DVD (brand new and not damaged at all) but for some reason it does not get written. I am using the in-built DVD burning facility in Windows 7 ultimated OS. I assume that once the iso is written to a DVD it extracts many files to DVD, right?

OpenSUSE :: Can't Write Grub In MBR

Apr 20, 2010

I am trying to install grub in MBR. I have working configuration on my root partion. I tried "grub-install" on MBR but gives me some warning.

Code:
/usr/sbin/grub-install /dev/sda

WARNING! You are trying to invoke the unsupported grub-install script with a parameter. To really do this, call grub-install.unsupported. You should rather call "yast2 bootloader" or create configuration files appropriate for the intended target. Also I tried it from Yast but still MBR has Chamelon boot loader.(I have chamelon boot loader, I want to overwrite my MBR with current grub configuration on my root partition.)

I tried using grub-install.unsupported but it did not work either. it says: /dev/sda does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.

I tried grub-editor (kde module) to do the work, but it gives me error: grub-install returned and unknown error exit code 1.

For example in the My Documents directory:

Code:
$ mkdir test
mkdir: cannot create directory `test': Operation not supported

I get the same message if I try to rename My Documents using either mv in the terminal or the Rename option in gnome.

Ubuntu :: How To Write An .img File.

Jan 26, 2011

I have tried for some time to write an .img file to a USB and a SD Card to boot from to my Netbook. The .img file is from Moblin and they suggest that I use Win32 Disk Imager to write the file to my USB. Though it haven't worked for me even if i use the SD Card and other computers.

The easiest for me would be if i could write the .img file on my SD Card and i have search for some tutorials but haven't found a way to write the file.

I've read something about "dd" but don't get the "command", "code" - thingy. If any one know an easy tutorial for it would be great! Or even better would be a tip to another program/utility like the Win32 Disk Imager that works.
