Hardware :: Replace Power Supply Or Mount Internally?

Dec 22, 2009

I have a 500GB WesternDigital Elements external harddrive and recently I plugged it into my computer and noticed the green light on the power adapter didn't light up anymore. I'm assuming that the power adapter failed - is this a fairly safe assumption? I know it COULD be something else, but does this at least make sense to move forward?Coincidentally, I've been researching new externals to order a 1.5TB because the 500GB is full.

I'm contemplating two options:
1.) Replace the power supply for ~$40
2.) Take apart the external and mount it internally

If it is in fact the power supply it might be the best option to just replace the thing and have 2 externals for backing up data on. But if it turns out to not be the power supply I'm out $40.I'm not sure how taking apart the external and install the hard drive in a desktop computer would be. Is the harddrive a standard drive? Does it have all the same power cords a normal computer would? If so, I could just install it into my brother's desktop and retreive the data that way (and he'll have an extra 500GB hdd).

Hardware :: Using One Power Supply For Multiple Motherboards

Apr 19, 2011

Is it technically possible to use just one power supply for more than one motherboard? The reason for asking is that I have a number of old (a few years) boards that I would like to use to make up a blender render farm yet only have one spare PSU. Having looked at the pin spec URL...pin 16 (power on) should only be connected to one board (or have a manual switch to ground for on)Pin 9 (standby +5v) probably should only connect to the one board or none and the other (or all) boards would need pin 9 to be tied to a +5v pin.All the boards would network boot and have nothing connected to them, no disks, floppies, monitors, etc; as all data would reside on a network server.

General :: Changing The Power Supply Unit And The Distros?

I know this might be a stupid question, but here it goes: I have a problem with my actual power supply unit (the fan doesn't work as it should) and I will change it soon. Is there a problem with any of the Linux distributions if I change my power supply unit? I mean, will the Linux operating systems work properly with a new power supply unit or do I have to reinstall all Linux distributions?

General :: Power Went Out And Can't Mount Hard Drive ?

Jul 3, 2010

Recently (about 2 weeks ago) the power went out randomly in my household while my computer was running. Upon restarting, GRUB, (which I am still unsure what exactly that is) seems to fail to mount my hard drive. I've been searching for answers since this has occurred and I came to the realization that I am a complete newbie and I dived into the deep end of a pool without learning to swim first.

Initially, I managed to figure out how to wipe my hard drive and install Ubuntu 9.04 and everything was great until this happened. It was a learning process for me and I spent much time collecting info on the basics of Linux. So I know how to use the terminal (for the most part) and I can do a few other things. The good things is: I am excellent at following directions. So that's a start.

Here's what's happened and what I've done so far: Upon turning computer on GRUB tries to load my HD and fails. It gives me a list of strange codes and errors (I can write it all down and post if it will help otherwise it'll take me a decent amount of time) and starts something called "BusyBox". From here I have no idea. So searched a bit online and found that with my installation disk I can boot Ubuntu on some sort of "Live" mode. This allows me to access the terminal but my HD is not mounted (so I think) due to the OS running from the Disc.

Networking :: Addressing Internally And Externally With A /30?

Jan 27, 2011

It's more just straight networking rather than Linux related - possibly a rather large gap in my knowledge.Been asked to set up a Linux firewall / router for a friend, and he wants an external address on his PC and his firewall. He's got a /30... ISP seem to think this is normal. My understanding was different router interfaces should be in different subnets when it comes to addressing. eg:

WAN (then PC is how I'd set up an enterprise router, and from memory how I had to regurgitate networking for my Cisco exams. But they would have been large devices within a BGP environment, how does this compare to home use? Can you have interfaces on the same router within in the same subnet? I'm looking for the real world answer - not my CCNA answer or the config addressing scheme I just blindly followed...Is this right or can different interfaces be in the same subnet? If they can be in different subnets How would you do that with an eternal egWAN (what IP?) then PC you actually just set the router up as a /29 and then use the additional IP addresses for the LAN NIC on the router? (yes I'm aware you couldn't route to where it had actually been allocated)

Then with that how do I route the Which interface do I point it at? Even with a /29 I'd still have a routing issue right?Or are the ISP expecting you to do something with NAT / port forwarding. (and yes I could do this to get it working - but I want to understand it better) I'm asking the question here, because rather than just wanting a magic file to get things working, I'd actually rather understand the principles rather than just press a button and have it work.

CentOS 5 :: Can 'officially' Supply These Packages And Their Associated Dependencies?

Dec 4, 2009

The upstream provider is supplying samba3x (currently samba 3.3.8) packages in their supplementary repository. I know that most of what is in the supplementary repository is burdened with restrictive or non-free licenses, however, Samba is not.

The samba3x packages are critical for Windows Server 2008 trust relationships as well as Windows 7 client support for a CentOS server acting as a Windows domain controller. I know that I can either roll my own packages or compile from source, but an officially supported version would be a much better option on a production server. Is there any way CentOS can "officially" supply these packages and their associated dependencies?

Programming :: Dynamically Supply Input To Netcat In A Script?

Mar 5, 2010

I am trying to write an irc bot to run interactive fiction games in a channel. I am connecting to the channel using nc. I'm having a hell of a time trying to supply input stdin for nc after the connection is established. Here's what's going on. I've got lines of plain text in a file with the irc commands required to identify the bot's ID and join the channel. I can connect easily using any of the following commands

cat inputfile | nc irc.servername.org 6667 -i 1
nc irc.servername.org 6667 -i 1 < inputfile
Named_Pipe | nc irc.servername.org 6667 -i 1
cat inputfile > Named_Pipe

With the first two commands nc connects, reads the file with some time between each line allowing the irc server to respond, bringing me into the channel. It then begins to receive stdin from the command line allowing me to do things like "privmsg #channelname :Hello World!!!" sending messages to the room. This is not the desired behavior. I require nc to take additional stdin from the inputfile if I cat additional text to the end of it.

The last set of commands using the named pipe seem like it does the same, but it doesn't actually send anything to the room, which indicates to me that perhaps nc is continuing to take stdin from the named pipe (this is the desired behavior) rather than dropping to the console for stdin. If I try to cat more plain text data to the end of the named pipe, however, either with something like "echo 'privmsg #channelname :Hello World!!!' > Named_Pipe" (or >> instead of >) or with a filename in place of the "echo" command the whole command simply seems to hang until I press ctrl-C.

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. With anonymous and named pipes, and with redirection, the problem seems to be the same. nc seems to take it's stdin from the file until it hits the end of file, at which point I can no longer introduce new lines of plain text as stdin for the running nc process.
