General :: Viewing Owner Of File On Windows Share

Mar 16, 2011

I'm interested in viewing the owners of files on a Windows Server 2003 share (mounted on a Linux computer). These "owners" would be users in Active Directory. If it's not possible to see the username, I wonder if it will at least show a unique identifier. Currently it says all files are owned by root with an "ls -l".

Ubuntu :: Viewing Desktop Using Remote Client (Windows TightVNC) Doesn't Work

Apr 30, 2010

When either of the proprietary Nvidia drivers are enabled, viewing the desktop using a remote client (Windows TightVNC) does not work. The initial remote screen display is ok, but no updates to the remote display occur. Reverting back to the non-proprietary driver solves the problem. I have also tried using a 10.04 Live CD and used Remote Desktop Viewer on the client machine, and it behaves the same way.

For Internet Explorer you have to install Windows Media Player.

For Firefox on Windows install the Microsoft Media Player Plugin. If it's already installed it may be disabled.

To check, go to Tools menu, choose Add-ons and then Plugins tab. There look for Microsoft Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin and reenable it."

General :: Viewing Files That Have Already Printed?

Oct 26, 2010

I'd like to know how to see which files have been printed on the printer. I can see which print jobs have run and who submitted them using the following command:

Code:
$ lpstat -W completed -o
but it doesn't show me the names of the files that printed.

Is there a way to set a retention policy to have it hold the job in the queue even after it's finished printing? Or a command to view the details of jobs that have already run? I'm looking for something similar to the output of the lpq command.

General :: Viewing Backup Files But Only In Some Directories?

Oct 26, 2010

I backed up my Laptop with a script, as follows:

Code:

#! /bin/bash
sudo
growisofs -Z /dev/dvd -dvd-compat -r -v /home

I then installed a new version of Ubuntu 10.04 from disk and copied the files in /home from the cd to the hard. I am able to open, view etc. all the files in most directories except those in /home/documents. There are text files created by gedit, OOWP and several PDF files. I cannot open or view these files, depending: gedit and pdf files gets a Err.Msg. "Don't recognize file type" (it is clearly marked PDF) . The OO files look like rows of 'high bits' and a dialogue box opens giving me the options to change Char. Set, Font, Language, Paragraph break.

So in the GRUB at start i have choosen Linux - recovery mode, to see what options that gave me, and i tried FailSafe mode, but i get an error and it just goes back to the recovery menu. My question is how do i get to the terminal style screen as its too quick for me to see the error, and i cant photograph it as its too fast. i cant see it being an issue with the graphics because of the properly displayed kubuntu loading screen beforehand

General :: Can't See Shared Drive From Windows?

Jan 2, 2011

All my windows PC's show the Linux computer in the network -but that's it. No sign of anything on the Linux computer. I built a Linux box, two drives. Linux OS on first drive, Second drive (320MB) is one FAT32 partition. Mount point for second drive is /mnt/windows. I set it up in Samba as shared with read, write, and browse all set to "yes".

From other computers connected to my router (XP and Vista OS) I can see the Linux computer (Icon shown with the computer name), I can successfully ping it's IP address -but I can't see any drives or directories on it. No error codes, no password requests.In the network neighborhood in windows it shows the Linux machine, but when i click on it, I only get "properties" which does not include any drives or directories.I'm really stuck here -I don't know what's missing in the network configuration or how to troubleshoot this (no error message). How do I get /mnt/windows on the Linux machine visible to the windows computers?

General :: Firefox Viewing Text Files In External Editor

Mar 10, 2011

I would like to make Firefox view text files not in its internal editor, but in the external editor (namely EmacsClient).Is it possible to change this default behavior of Firefox?I beg your pardon for being inconcise, I'll try to state the matter once again. First thing to mention is that I use the Linux version of Firefox. That means that unlike the Windows version the contents of the application bindings dialog is very scarce.

When I click on the link to a text file (be it remote or local) by default Firefox opens it in the internal browser. I've tested, somehow it looks at file extension - when for example I make a file with .mpg extension, the behaviour is as it should be - the dialog with "Open With..." and stuff. When the file has unknown extension (unknown to /etc/mime.types), in my case it's .out, pure text format - the default behaviour is to open it in a Firefox window.
