I got swap space full error and the ubuntu version of "blue screen of death". I used Disk Utilities to delete a 2.1GB unused partition. When I tried to create a swap space partition (with Disk Utilities) it failed. In the mean time ubuntu did some security updates. When I tried to create again Disk Uilities did not complain but only created a small ~ 500 kB partition. I deleted that and reboot and got "unknown filesystem grub rescue>". I booted from a USB key successfully. Now Disk Utilities and File Browser can see all the partitions and files on the hard drive, but GParted thinks the entire hard drive is unallocated. I vaguely remember that there are two partition table on the hard drive. It may be that one of them was deleted (when I removed the ~ 500 kB partition with Disk Utilities earlier maybe?). It seems at least the other partition table is still intact since Disk Utilities and File Browser can still see all the partitions and files. Is it possible to restore the deleted or damaged partition table and make the hard drive bootable again?
I ve got a dual boot, XP and FC 12 on a single harddrive. After defragmentation of NTFS partition (With XP installation) cant'boot linux So, rub statrts with boot menu after selecting linux it tries to load linux but prints out some messages again and again (I do not remember contetn of messages) And these messages are circulating
I have searched and didnt find a situation like mine so i thought id ask. i have a dual boot setup on my hp pavillion windows vista /dev/sda1 and backtrack linux 3,while trying to install backtrack 4 (which is ubuntu based) i deleted the former partitons for bt3. im not quite sure what i clicked but using the ubiquity installer it deleted my partition table so now my entire drive is listed as unallocated space. i have some very important files on my windows partition other wise i would just format and start over. how can i restore the partition table and boot to windows to atleast grab the important stuff. the drive hasnt been formatted so the info is still there i just cant get to it anyone have any ideas?
I was working on creating a partition on a new hard drive I was planning on using for storage. I wasn't paying attention and chose to delete the partition on my master. I am running a dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu. When I rebooted It will only go to the Grub> prompt. Ive ran TestDisk and though that I had corrected the problem but it didnt. After running TestDisk again here is what It came up with.

After writing the table above I rebooted. Windows prompted me for my restore disk. I rebooted to the live cd again and ran Fdisk.
I was putting the cover back on my Antec p180b, and I guess it got stuck and gave it a hard bump (pretty much broke the cover). As a result, one of my hard drives, a Seagate Barracuda ST3750640AS, got messed up or something. All the other hard drives are fine. It's in an LVM with another hard drive, so now I can't boot up into my computer. So I booted into the installation CD:
# find /dev/sd[a-c][1-3] /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2
This led me to believe the partition was messed up. So I ran cfdisk, and it said something about a missing partition table or something. Additionally, instead of showing the single partition on it, it displays, from my recollection, Pri*Log. To my knowledge, this is the only problem with the hard drive. So now I need to either somehow create or restore the partition table without overwriting the data. Or get a new hard drive, and some how recover the data (LVM, partitions, and all).
I had an older PC on which I had two SATA drives and an IDE one and on the latter I had Windows 7 installed (I kept it on that drive since I'm not using Windows 7 that often, I'm primarily using Debian as my daily go-to OS), but since then I got a new PC which has no connectivity for IDE, so I had to decommision the drive, and before I did that, I backed up the Windows 7 partition (and the second partition which I used mostly for storing sofware and stuff that I wouldn't want to get wiped after a fresh Windows install) using dd.
Not reading up on this on the internet, doing so with the intention to restore the partition image on the same spot on the disk, but since the SSD is larger than the IDE drive, I made the partitions on it bigger, so there's no chance the Windows 7 partition to be on the same spot on the disk. I tried booting into Windows 7 from GRUB after it successfully detected the Win7 install on the second partition on the SSD, but it just leaves me with a blank screen with a blinking white cursor, so I'm guessing it's not going to fly again. So my question to you: is it possible to ressurect the Windows 7 installation, avoiding having to reinstall Windows? (which would severly complicate things, having to backup and wipe the Debian install I have on the first partition...)
So far I've tried this to fix the Windows 7 install by pointing at the right disk "coordinates": [URL] ...., but I can't seem to get it to work, all I get is some error in regards to not being able to detect the disk's geometry (I think it was the number heads I couldn't figure out to input in the command line), so I couldn't fix it.
restore of Win XP partition - he wants to be able to "press the button" and restore the whole partition with XP using Clonezilla. Is it possible - to do this restore without Clonezilla CD? And he's planning to have 3 partitions on his HDD:Windows XP system partition partition for backing up system partition partition for personal data
Purpose: Python, PHP, WebKit (hopefully), and pyqt development. There is Wubi for Ubuntu, which I am using right now. But Ubuntu 11.04 doesn't work well with my system. There is a Wubi like installer for Puppy Linux. There is Debian Win32 installer, but I think that does touch the partition table. My last option is to simply grab Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and hope it works. Would that be a viable solution considering my needs?
I know i get the error code because i dont have my windows partition. But i seriously need my vista back. I tried using VMware player but it didn't work. Is there anyway i can restore my windows partition without the installation disc? The restore disc does not work as it needs a windows partition.
I was installing opensuse 11.2 in parallel with windows xp.but during installation suddenly power has gone and after that opensuse is giving me the error message corrupt partition.i am also not able to login in xp. so I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.

I'm working directly in an Ubuntu Virtual Machine (VM). Some updates (like kernel) were available at the update manager.If I weren't using a VM, I wouldn't update it since it's a risk to break something. Since it's a VM, you can create a Snapshot or export an appliance and restore if something goes wrong.Suppose I'm not using a VM with a Debian/Ubuntu installation. Is there a install-restore approach that doesn't depend in a VM configuration to restore your system exactly before an upgrade (Like a "Restore Point" in Windows), being easy to restore like a VM appliance?
I have tried to automate the configuration of a usb drive with not much success.
The problem that I have is that I have a large amount of usb drives that have a partition table of type "loop" and I need to change them to "msdos". The size of the drives vary and I need to use FAT32 or FAT16 file system.
I've tried various partitioning commands and gui applications but cant find one that I can give a one line command to to set the partition table, maximum partition size and file system.
I had 40 gb of unused space at the beginning of my drive, then a 15gb primary ext3 partition for /, then a 100GB ext4 primary partition for /home, then a 4 gb extended partition that contains two 2 gb swap partitions.
I installed FreeBSD on the empty space at the beginning of the drive. The slice I created did not start on the first block. There were a few MB of free space before and after it.
After the installation finished (with no errors), grub would hang on the "Grub loading/Welcome to Grub screen". I booted a squeeze CD in rescue mode and reinstalled grub to /dev/sda. After rebooting, Grub still hangs at the same place.
I booted a live CD and checked the output of fdisk. For each of my partitions, it says "Partition does not end on cylinder boundary". I am hoping that whatever happened to my disk is not recoverable. Fortunately, I backed up some essential files beforehand, but I still don't really want to lose my old squeeze system.
had a bad experience when Fedora 15 overwrote the ext4 partition of a data disk to MVL during the installation process.I cloned the HD and now I am working on it. However, my first attempt resulted in 900.00 number-renamed files into the lost+found folder. And that's not what I want: with this number of files I need to recover the directory structure and the files real names.I know this is a hard issue for being discussed in the forum and that I shall look for some expert help, but, I wished to useis bad moment as an opportunity of learning.
I have a 6TB external eSata bay (Lacie BigQuadra). I made a GPT table with only one big ext4 partition. All was ok. I resized the ext4 partition and I created a 1TB NTFS partition. I can use it on Kubuntu but Windows 7 tell me the partition is not formated. When I go back to Kubuntu, parted tell me that the secondary GPT table is not at the end of the disk and tell me it's probably an other OS that thinks the disk is smaller that its real size. It seems Windows 7 thinks the disk size is 2 TB (and modify automaticaly the GPT table and create a secondary GPT table on the middle of the disk).
What can I do to make my NTFS partition visible in Windows 7? What can I do to prevent Windows 7 to move the secondary partition table on the middle of the disk and to modify the primary GPT table ?
I have an unallocated space at the end of my hdd, which is about 10 gb. I installed Pardus on that space, but then deleted the partition to install something else (I know I did not have to delete it, I could simply install the new thing over it), i dont remember exactly how, but it was from my Debian System, not from a LiveCD.Now, I am unable to use that space. GParted gives an error and says:Warning: the kernel failed to re-read the partition tableon /dev/sda (Device or resource nusy). As a result, it may not reflect all of your changes until after reboot.
I have just installed the newest Debian Stable 7.8 release on my new notebook. Before installation I had to free some disk space from the preinstalled Windows7 with ntfsresize and fdisk. In addition to the existing three primary partitions I created an extended one with three logical partitions for /(root) /home and swap, see the output of 'fdisk -lu'
For some reason I put a bootable flag on sda7, and the only small concern during installation was that some BIOS systems might not work with boot-flag no logical drives. Now, every time I boot I get this "Invalid partition table!' message which I must 'enter" away before I get to the GRUB menu.
i have got an Debian Lenny NAS with 7x1,5TB of a Softwareraid5. Kernel Version is 2.6.32. The Raid ist mountet in /media/raid5. The System ist on a seperate disk and work fine. After i tested the performance of the raid with:
Since i had done this i cant find any Data on /media/raid5. cat /proc/mdstat and mdadm --detail /dev/md0 looks fine. All UUID's are good. But: The SuperBlock is unreadable and the partition table was not found. mke2fs -n /dev/md0 shows some Backup of the Superblock , but i cant repair it with fsck.ext4: Illegal inode number on /dev/md0.
I have installed the fedora 13 x86_64 live cd. I updated fedora as well as installing gparted.y hard disc containing my operating systems is not being read by gparted.unalloacted partition table. Also i am not able to mount a ntfs parition on the same hard disc.I did create the partition table on all hard discs with gparted livAnybody else had this problem? A kernel crash is also reported.DIT:I booted ubuntu 10.04 and opened gparted v5.1 without any problem. I booted fedora 13 again and now gparted 5.2
As soon as I install and reboot OpenSUSE, my partition table gets lost somehow. Here is some information about my system:
Dual-booting system with Vista and OpenSUSE 2 SATA hard drives combined into one with Vista installed on them. 1 IDE hard drive with OpenSUSE installed on it.
When I install OpenSUSE, it loads fine right after the installation. Then, when I reboot the computer and select to load OpenSUSE from the Grub loader menu, it hangs right after:

I tried running System Repair off of a DVD and automated test - it tells me that the partition table is lost. I choose to recover partition table and after a while it does but I am still unable to boot.
I installed openSUSE on a XP runnng computer and every thing is OK.When I tried to Install a new XP, I got this error:Code:Invalid Partition Table I fixed it by reinstalling GRUB using Rescue System.I tried fix mbr on XP Repair System and I got that error again.Now I want to keep XP and remove openSUSE. But computer only boots by GRUB and XP's boot loader is unable to boot and shows that error
I have never seen this before wit any previous versions of ubuntu - wondering if anyone else has seen it or can explain it. The break down of the partition table is being viewed with Ranish Partition v2.43 It's old program, but it has been really handy.
What is happening is: Prior to the install of ubuntu on the 3rd Primary partition, you'll see that the 4th partition (which has a couple of logical partitions in it) starts at: (14,380 - 0 - 1) ===> Cylinder - Head - Sector After the installation of Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS it shows a Non-conventional start point of: (14,380 - 0 - 62) =====> Cylinder - Head - Sector. An unused is left between the 3rd and 4th Primary partition.
This is not a big deal - just unusual (IMO) With the same partition layout (pre install) It doesn't matter if I install ubuntu on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd primary partition. The 4th one ALWAYS gets changed this way.
I'm trying to define the partition table type (I want to set it to msdos) for an automatic installation using preseeding file. (Why? I want to setup a software RAID 1 with two 2TB disks, by default the installer uses gpt partition tabless on those disks, where it's tricky to install grub(2), as there is no mbr, and the root partition is on a md device) During manual installtion it is possible to set the partition table type (by setting debconf priority to low).
Does anyone know what I have to put in my config file so that a msdos partition table will be created Also any other solution is welcome. I just want to have my root partition on a raid 1 and have grub installed, so that it boots up (No other OS is installed on the boxes. Debian squeeze is used)
