General :: Resize Root Partition & Add Space To Home?

l my root (/) partition has 11G free space and my /home is only left with 5g around and /usr has around 8g in my fedora 13 .So is there any possibility to "resize" the root partition and add it to home partition bcoz i see the opposite in the threads(resize home to add space to root).My home has nothin more than a movie which is 700MB and i've installed some new application yesterday. But it shows half of the space is almost used!!!
So, I wan't completely paying attention to the default partitioning that Red Hat Enterprise 6 does.
I was setting up a base image for VMWare and the disk was 200GB, but for some reason the default is for about 40% to go to the root partition and then the rest of it to go to /home (this doesn't include the 2GB or so in swap).
Is there an easy way to recover the space under /home and expand the root partition? Assume there are no user accounts created.
I have around 30gb of free space in my partition table immediately before the Linux partition. I want to resize my linux partition to take up this space.
I tried booting with live cd, sucessfully umounted the hard drive but found I could not resize the partition. On clicking the 'edit size' button, partition manager recognised the free space before the partition but when i reduced this, the 'ok' button was greyed out. (it was not greyed out for the windows partition so I could, in theory, increase the windows partition to take up the free space but this is not what i wanted to do).
I am pretty sure that I had managed to unmount the drive correctly as the padlock symbol had dissapeared (I took the attached screenshot, which does show the lock symbol, after rebooting into my normal system).
Anyone got any ideas as to why it wont allow this? There is no reason why i can resize the partition to take up the free space BEFORE it is there?
I need to make my root partition bigger to add more free space. Is there a Linux version that will fit on a small usb flash drive that has the tools I need? I plan to boot a Linux distro from a flash drive in order to resize the partition.
I'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) .None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows or external disk and use ubuntu only to install and use softwares and browsing. So how do increase the available space for installing more softwares?
Recently I decided to give Ubuntu 10.04 a try and I didn't like it + some drivers were really buggy so I deleted the partition. I can't boot. I covered the process of how I fixed it on my blog here. Anyhow, now I'd like to expand my windows partition as there's 175gb of unallocated space. The problem is gparted won't let me expand it (trying this via liveCD). I've tried mounting/unmounting it's no luck.
I recently downloaded/installed Gparted as I want to resize my ubuntu to more HDD space in partition and reduce NTFS partition size. Is there any faster way to do gparted in ubuntu? I remembered in previous versions of ubuntu that gparted had MBR but I can't find info to do this.
fter my first fedora 10 installation I reinstalled FC 10 keeping my home partition from the first install.I then installed a software as a USER which indeed installs applications on USER's home. Now I'm short of space for installing the applications and so I want to resize my existing home (of USER).Can this be done without reinstallation? Can I borrow needed amount of space from the home partition of 1st install.also I have unformatted and unpartitioned free space can this be made use of? Or the only way is to reinstall
Today I was installing a lot of software since I'm just setting up my Slackware system again after a fresh install, and I realized that my root partition has very little space left.

As you can see, I have a 20G (19G here for some reason) root partition, 8G /var, and 86G of /home. I thought this would be plenty since many recent recommendations for / are 10-15G. Now, though, 17G are used up for some reason! How is this possible? I thought a full slackware install only had about 4G of software! I don't have any music or movies or any crazy huge files that I know of, and those would be in my /home directory anyway. Is there any way I can see which files are taking up all this space?
If it's necessary to allocate more space to my / partition, is it still possible to boot up a GParted live Cd, shrink /home a bit, move some partitions to the right, and expand my root partition? I would REALLY prefer I don't have to reinstall since I just spent a ton of time setting up my system again, but if worst comes to worst ... :'-(
I have some contiguous free space available next to where my root partition resides on the hard drive. I was thinking of resizing the root partition with gparted to take up this space, but it's kind of risky. I was wondering if there is another way to include this partition into my Linux partition without resizing? Like somehow link it in so that / will have more free space?
I have serwer Debian with my website. My provider splited the disc into 5GB partition for / and 495GB partition for /var. Everything was going ok for over two years but now I don't have enough memory on /. I'd like to increase the partition but the problem is that /var is just next to it so I can't easily change the end of the first one. I need some safe solution. It might be even just shrinking partition for /var, adding new one after if it helps anyhow (I have about 450GB free memory).

I have a BIG extended partition. It's at about 750Gb. Aside from that, I have 2 unallocated spaces, one at 240Gb and one at 5Gb. I want to make one of my storage drives bigger, and so that I can take advantage of all the space I have. (Those 250Gb have been unused for ages. I want to use them for my growing libraries.) So I wonder: would it be safe to put these smaller "chunks" into the extended partition, and still have a working systen? I don't want to mess it all up.
Also, can I safely resize a partition, like adding the extra space, without touching the existing data? I'm not exactly sure how the resize/move function in GParted works. Will it wipe and extend or only extend it by adding it? It would be nice to have these questions answered. Also, if it's to any help, this is my partition table as of now:
As for the first entries, they're unallocated. They're the primary drives, but they don't exist. I'm actually considering to move my partitions out of the extended one, because I only have 3 partitions that I use and will ever use. But if the extended partition is not a problem, I will just keep it this way.
I'd imagine that I first extend the extended partition to consume the unallocated space, and then I move it all to the end of the partition, and then resize sda7 to consume it, and get a 750Gb partition. Can this be done without loss of data?
My debian 5 is up and running smoothly and act as file-server in the middle of windows network jungle using samba the only problem is, after backup an external hdd (213 GB) to my /home partition, I end up with message say that I'm running out free space. Fyi my debian installed on 1TB SATA disk, and I separate my /home partition from system what happen to my free space ? here is screenshot of my disk, using disk usage analyzer: is there is a way to get my space back or something missing on my setup.or I have to reinstall my debian and use LVM when partitioning my disk?
I recently installed Lenny and used the "Guided - Use Entire Disk" option.I made separate partitions for root, /etc, /var, /home, /usr and swap.I trusted that the auto partitioner would choose sensible sizes but possibly that was a bad move, root is only 340Mb and is full.
while using it or in any way that does not include restarting the PC?I don't really have high hopes for this or anything, it's just that if there is a way I think it would be interesting enough for me to want to know
I've been trying to resize my root partition with gparted. I resize a ntfs partition to get more freespace available and I got 30GB of freespace and when I try to resize my root partition (unmounted) I can't do it, it's like I don't have any freespace.
I just installed ubuntu on my laptop and I was recommended to create separate partitions for root, home and swap. I was told that 15GB would be enough for a root partition but I am actually running out of that space very quickly after installing a few programs.

i installed fedora kde 32 bit and iam realy loving it. but i want to resize my home partition as i got a message there is no space in my home folder i downloaded a Disk utility application .... to try and resize .... but looks like i dont know what to do
I have finally been convinced to partition my 500GB hard drive from a two partition setup with root and swap to a three partition setup with root, swap, and home. I found a nice tutorial about how to do this, but here is my question:
A) How much space do I leave for the root partition and the home partition?
I have an Acer Aspire One, Model ZG5 (also known as the 110 with 8GB SSD) which originally came with Linpus Lite installed on it.
I previously had 9.10 installed which was great, but I've done a fresh install of UNR 10.04 since I had a full /home partition and wanted to set up with more space.
This time, I opted for a larger /home drive (~4GB) and also to have it encrypted, which is a good idea for netbooks given their portability (and I have no idea why I didn't do it before!). Since I had very little space on my 8GB drive (if I wanted a larger /home) then I installed /home onto a separate partition, which is located on a 16GB SD card which lives in my machine permanently.
Installation was a breeze, and encryption seems to work fine. I have verified it and it seems to be working. However, I've now hit two related problems - one of which is to do with Thunderbird, and one which is an issue with the encrypted /home drive.
Firstly, I have a large gmail account which I like to replicate offline in Thunderbird (am using v 3.0.4). My online gmail tells me that I'm using 1.4GB of data space online. Using the old T'bird (v2.whatever) my offline T'bird storage was approximately the same size. This is not now true of my current offline storage file size, which is showing at 3.2GB for the same data. I started with a clean slate, just installing T'bird, setting up my account and then leaving it to download all data from Google.
Anyone know why this offline size is so much bigger than the online storage size or even the previous offline storage size?
Secondly, the encrypted /home drive. Given that I needed I put this on a separate card and partition, I had hoped to escape any issues with not having enough space. However, my system is now telling me that /home is out of space...
Specifically, I can see that I have used 3.6 of my 3.8GB storage for /home. This is due to the large size of my offline storage folder.
As I see it, I need to do one of two things (possibly both) - reduce the size of my offline e-mail storage, and increase the size of my /home partition.
Reducing the offline storage will be about finding out why it's so big in the first place.
However, if I wanted to increase the size of my encrypted /home file how would I do this? I have used gparted to make additional space after it - so I could increase the size if it's possible, but I am a little concerned.
If I just increase the size of the partition, would this work? Are there issues with the fact that it's an encrypted partition? What should I be aware of if I wanted to increase an already in-use partition, and how should I best go about this?
i have a 700GB ext4 partition for storage purposes. By default it has 5% of the space (35GB!) reserved for root, which does not make sense for this partition. how can i reduce this percentage? there is already a lot of data on the partition and i'm afraid that mke2fs would erase all the data. is there a way to change the percentage without touching the data?
I'm not sure if I can even explain this properly! I'm attaching a hopefully self-explanatory screenshot of
(1) system monitor saying that 23.3 out of 24.6 GB of my root is used (!!!) (2) diskanalyzer showing root should be 5.9+4+3.3+some small stuff = about 15 GB.
At startup I get a warning saying something along the lines of "you only have 50MB available on root file system.. you should delete unnecessary files.. " and that opens Disk Usage Analyzer.
Possible suspect - I had been trying out VirtualBox. On root. My virtual machine did have an 8gig hard drive, expandable I believe. But it never got past 1.7, and I've removed it, uninstalled VB and removed it from trash. (Is this weird: my trash is at /home/me/.local/share/Trash/files - took me a hell of a while to find it!)
With 100MB available on root I can barely do anything! My whole compiz/config setup even disappeared after a reboot!
Today I was notified on my netbook that my root folder is running out of space. When I ran the disk analyzer, it showed that most of the space is going towards the videos folder in /media/win7. My ~/Videos folder is symbolically linked to the videos folder on my Windows partition, which is mounted in my fstab using ntfs-3g under /media/win7. The question now is, shouldn't the videos only exist in the windows partition? /media/win7 usage shouldn't affect space usage in my root folder right?
