General :: Put Applications That Need Data On Ubuntu?

Jan 22, 2011

I just downloaded Eclipse, and it is packaged as a compressed file. Within is a folder with the application plus configuration and any plugins et cetera. Should I simply put this in my /usr/bin folder? Is the bin path recursive, so that it will execute eclipse/eclipse when I simply write eclipse? All other files in there are simply that - single binaries, and no config-files or such.

Another possibility that occured to me is place the application in a separate folder, create a bash script that simply starts the application in the bin folder. But what folder would be good? I don't really want to contaminate my home folder with machine-wide applications...You might call me pedantic, but that is because I am. I just want to know what the "convention" is so to speak.

Ubuntu :: Backup Software That Backs Up Applications And User Data?

Oct 12, 2010

I have searched and searched for answers to this question, but I can't find what I'm searching for anywhere. At least with the search terms I'm using. So, my question is, is there a backup software for Linux that backs up not only a user's home folder, etc, but also the user's applications, and its associated data.

I am about to upgrade my mother's computer to Lucid, but I don't want to do that until I can find a backup solution that will ensure she doesn't lose any of her application data. She has a lot of apps on her netbook, so just finding out where each individual app stores its data and backing it up is kind of out of the question. Unless every app that the end-user uses (that isn't run as root, obviously) stores its data in the home folder, then it would be easier.Honestly, I use a Mac and I guess I'm just used to the simplicity of Time Machine, which certainly backs up applications, application data, user data, and even extra executables in all the /bin folders (which Macs don't typically use to store most applications). I've heard TimeVault is like Time Machine, but when I tried to use it on her computer, it wouldn't work because it wasn't compatible with the version of Ubuntu that was (and still is) on her computer.

Applications :: Accessing Shared Data Between Threads Using Mutex?

May 3, 2010

I have written an application which has more than 6 threads. Two threads share a common linked list. Out of two threads one thread reads the linked list node and other thread writes to linked list node.I am using pthread_mutex_lock() API to achieve synchronisation between having access to common linked list. The problem is the first thread which reads the linked list accesses the mutex faster making other thread to starve.

I want both the thread to have an access to mutex. It should not happen that always first thread locks, releases and relocks it. The first thread almost require to access the link list every 5 msec which is causing second thread not to gain the mutex. How should I fix this? For information, I am running this application on PXA270 ARM platform.

Applications :: Firefox Slower Compiling Data Than In Vista

Oct 2, 2010

I've been trying to make Linux my only OS and have run into another snag - this time with Firefox. I realize I could try Opera or Chrome but for this thread I'm concerned with Firefox.I still dual-boot and while I've always notice that Firefox doesn't scroll as smoothly as it does in Vista, this latest issue is a concern:

I'm on the BOD for a different club forum (hobby) and need to print a list of the new registrants for various reasons. Firefox initially presents the list in portrait mode but I need it to be in landscape. Generating the initial "print preview" then changing the "print preview" from portrait to landscape takes substantially longer than in Vista on the same's 30-40 seconds in Vista and nearly 2 minutes in Linux - that's a huge difference!!

As I mentioned it's a dual boot so the hardware is the same and it shouldn't involve the HPLIP service as it's a preview.I don't know if this is an openSuse issue, Kernel issue or something else.

Applications :: Finding A Program To Destroy Data On DVDs

Feb 7, 2011

What I want to do is force my DVD burner to use full writing power on the entire surface of a DVD. This should be able to invisibly damage the contained data, and should work on CDs, DVDs and BRDs too (in theory). I don't want to write data over it, so it's not a matter of having a RW disc or a R one. The result I want to obtain is simply an unreadable disc that does not look damaged. Do you know if there's a program able to ignore a disc being already full and perform this task?

Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

Software :: Get Installed Applications List And Applications Activity

May 25, 2009

Is there a programmatic way to get the list of all installed applications on Linux.

Also, how can we get the application activities in Linux OS like running applications name, time of day when they started, duration till the applications were running on system, application version etc.

Is there a way to do this in C/C++.

I am building an app that runs like a daemon and fetches the applications status and sends it to the network admin for him to monitor the application usage pattern on the user computers in the network.

Ubuntu Servers :: Access The Data In .fbd Data File

Feb 19, 2011

We purchased a new database system at work last October, ditching the old system because of a lack of support from the vendor. This is a retail Point of Sale and Backoffice database system. I am not sure what system the new one runs on, but the system we replaced was a Firebird data base. The reason I am posting is because we are now in need of the information contained in the old database which was not completely imported into the new system.

Basically the problem is this: The database in on a Windows XP system and I found a copy of SQL Manager Lite 2008 on the system, which after quite a bit of studying, I figured out how to extract the database into a removable file. I have this file (178MB) on a USB stick in a file called Backoffice.fbd.

My studying suggests to me that I can get into this database with MySQL. I have never used this and have no clue how to do this. All I want to be able to do get into the database and create tab deliminated spreadsheet files for each of the database sections (Customers, Repairs, Sales History, stock files, etc.) Is it possible to do this with Ubuntu and MySQL and if so, can expert suggest one or two things to get me started. While a guided tutorial would be nice because I am not an expert, I am willing to learn on my own if someone could point me in the right direction.

How on God's green earth do you install applications on Linux? You have to jump through hoops and travel to application managers, command line scripting and all sorts of other mess just to install a program? Is it really that much different that a simple install or setup file cannot be created that the end user clicks on? I'm struggling with the concept that entire programs can be written in open source code but an installation routine is beyond the scope of the developers.

Programming :: Data Directory In Automake - Data Is Always Read-only ?

May 9, 2010

I have some data files that should be distributed with my program. Using dist_pkgdata_DATA in, I get these files installed to /usr/local/data/share/package-name. The problem is that data is read-only, and my program needs to modify it. Playing with dist_sharedstate_DATA, dist_localstate_DATA, dist-data_DATA varibles, I got different installation directories, like /usr/local/com, usr/local/var, but data is always read-only.

How can I distribute modifiable data files with my package? I need some common directory for all users, or maybe local data in a user directory.
