General :: Permissions For USB And "media" Drives?

How do I configure permissions and ownership [aka, access control] for USB and other "media" drives? In general, I want the plain user to have read-write-modify access. For the long haul, I would prefer some sort of config table that says this media gets those access settings on an individual basis.
While on the subject of "media" drives, how do I configure where a drive gets mounted? It appears that the defaults is /media/someString where "someString" is either a generated string or the volume label. Is this accomplished by a script somewhere that I might modify or configure?
I login using my personal, non-root account. When I connect a USB or other "media" drive, the permissions and ownership are such that I cannot use the desktop tools to alter the drive contents. Also, I need to guess where a given drive contents can be found.

I'm Ubuntu ex-fan (because of gnome-shell).
On Ubuntu, there was this very sane feature (for laptop/desktop user): when you insert a thumbdrive or external usb media, the system mounts the media and sets all the correct permissions for the current non-root logged in user.
What do I have to change/edit/configure to make Fedora 15 behave like this?

I was wondering, what if you had a flash drive formatted with an FS that has UNIX permissions. Then what if you copied some of your files onto it. And then put it into another computer that has a user account by the same name. WIll the user be able to access the files?What if you named your own user differently on the other computer, will you be able to get your files?

any way to change file permissions of NTFS drives? All my C programming files resides in a NTFS drive and I need to set execute permision on them in order to run. I tired chmod -Rv 777 /media/Programming. and also tired chmod 775 *.* after entering the folder in which all my files resides. but both these commands doesn't seem to have any effect on the files. I know NTFS doesn't use Unix file system and chmod command goes in vain.

I've hit a wall here; I'm attempting to find some way by which to view files and cd into directories on a device mounted read-only. So I need the permissions to read, write, execute (and the same with directories), but chmodding is out of the question because I don't want to alter the drive one iota.
I guess what I could do--what I was thinking of initially--was to dupe the whole drive and then mess with permissions. This wouldn't affect the original (actually I'm working on a duplicate of the original, but I'm treating it as if it were the original) but I was hoping for something that would maintain data integrity. This is a forensic application and not altering the data is very important.

Ive been noticing lately that in my media folder, where I am able to see all the drives I have connected, it seems that each one is duplicated. For example, if I have a drive called "WD" theres another called "WD_", or "Lacie" and "Lacie_". And when I click on the ones with the "_", it says I don't not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'lacie'. But when I click the ones without the underscore, I get in. But heres the funny part, when using jdownloader, and i choose the folder where to save the files, I have to select the drive that has the underscore in it. Heres some pics and if you look at my info screenlet to the left, you will see that it shows the drives with the undercore.

I'm running a fresh 64-bit install of Ubuntu 10.04. I no longer have a System->Preferences->Removable Drives and Media option in my menus, and need to re-configure it (I had set it to "Do Nothing" and "Always do this action" sometime in the past, but now I want to change it)I have right-clicked my menu, went to edit, and made sure it wasn't un-checked)Has the "Removable Drives and Media" option been moved somewhere else in 10.04?

I'm going traveling and I had the bright idea of putting my sensitive and irreplaceable files on an sd card. Then if I leave my stuff in a sketchy hostel for the day, I can easily take the card and might lose only a replaceable netbook. The problem is that I want some files to have 600 permissions (rw-------), readable and writable only by owner.
But no power on earth seems to be able to force a fuse-ified filesystem to pay attention. Whether I try "chmod 600 filename.txt" as the owner/user or as sudo makes no difference. Nothing works. The sd card is mounted with a line in /etc/fstab:
Code: Select allUUID=0000-0000 /mnt/64_GB_sdxc exfat auto,rw,user,exec,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0022,flush,fmask=133 0 0
So the user owns the files and they have typical permissions instead of the automounted default of 700. That's all very nice, but I'd like to be able to change permissions on just a few files!

When I insert a CD/DVD, it is auto-mounted in /media, but the folder beneath /media has permissions of 500. This is a pain when sharing the drive over the network using CIFS. Anyone know how to change the auto-mount permissions to 555?

I am having problems reading burned media from my optical drives. I can burn media but after it's burned my drives do not read them, but if I use a different system it reads just fine.I am a newbie at this so I have no idea what I did wrong.

Im trying to get my extra media drives to auto mount at boot, having problems with it. Does this line look right?
/dev/sdb /media auto auto,user,noexec,rw,sync 0 2
The one thing I'm not sure about is the mount point, am I just putting '/media' or am I putting '/media/MKV' or whatever the name of the drive may be?

I have two optical drives (not SATA) that previously showed up as /dev/hda and /dev/hdb. No longer. I see no mention of them in fstab and catting all the /dev/dvd /dev/cd... /dev/sr.. turns up nothing. If I place a disk with info in the drive nothing appears anywhere I can see (not in dmesg).
K3b tells me no devices found. wodim tells me Detected CD-R drive: /dev/sr1 wodim: Cannot do inquiry for CD/DVD-Recorder. Errno: 5 (Input/output error), test unit ready scsi sendcmd: fatal error CDB: 00 00 00 00 00 00 cmd finished after 0.000s timeout 40s (These are not SATA drives.) I noticed rebooting will show drives if there is media in there. However, that disappears after a while as well. Then inserting and reinserting cdroms gives no messages in dmesg.

I have one drive for Kubuntu and 4 other NTFS drives. When I'm using Ubuntu Desktop Environment (GNOME), I seem to be able to delete files, create new folders, files etc, in all the NTFS drives. That is, I have full permissions to make changes in the NTFS drives. But when I switch to KDE, this isn't possible. Options like rename, delete, cut, etc, aren't working, they aren't highlighted.Is there any way I can have full permissions to modify NTFS drives in KDE?

i am using SUSE 11.0 KDE 4.0 i had root account installed in 8.0 Gb drive, and a normal account installed in 4.0 Gb drive .And i was using rest of space for windows (NTFS). Now i want to use a drive (NTFS) to linux for additional requirements. i want get write permissions to that drive .. am i able to get ??r else ..i need to format with EXT3?

So recently I've been trying out openSUSE, along with a few other distros, for use on my HTPC. Previously, I'd been using a hackintosh build, so my external media storage HDDs are all formated HFS+. It was actually surprisingly easy to get openSUSE to mount them for both reading and writing.
Only thing is, XBMC has been pretty unstable on all of the linux distros I've tried, and I'm wondering to what degree the HFS filesystem might be affecting things? It would take a fair bit of juggling -- or going out and buying a new multi-TB HDD -- to clear out the disks in turn so as to reformat them with an ext filesystem, but if that would help me get a more stable HTPC with opensuse -- the linux distro I've settled on -- it'd be worth it. I'll paste a link to the log from an xbmc crash, in case that would be helpful, but really, I'm just curious, since I don't really know all that much about how different filesystems work or anything, how much extra strain does the filesystem translating entail?

I've just partitioned my hard drive with GParted so that I have space to install and run Windows OS based programmes such as Monkey Island (wine simply won't work) and other PC games. I have the Windows XP SP2 Installation CD but my OS (Intrepid Ibex) won't allow me to autorun the CD and proceed to installation.
Now having hunted around the net little, it seems the answer is System->Preferences->Removable Drives and Media. Problem is, I don't have a Removable Drives and Media option on this menu. Is there a workaround for this? E.g., is there a way of using the Terminal to enable autorun, or is there another way I can do this?As I'm pretty new to this thing, feel free to use short words and detailed explanations.

had trouble writing to a flash drive. checked the permissions, the correct user it there, but the id is root.when logged in as root and attempt to change permissions i get Could not modify the ownership of file /media/disk-3. You have insufficient access to the file to perform the change.
now how as root can not have enough permission? i've been up and down the forums and google to no avail. poked around in the fstab and even mtab as there are two files, one a lock, that seems to come from mtab.

I've heard a lot of people recommending clam av, but everything I've read suggests that clam av is better used for scanning e-mail servers and not home desktop application...

Through some recent update, which one I am not sure, my system no longer responds to removable media such as flash drives and insertions of DVD/CD disks. Whereas before, for instance, if I inserted a USB flash drive, the "Device Notifier" would pop up, tell me that a new device had been detected, and ask me what I wanted to do with it, now nothing. "My Computer" (sysinfo:/)does not update either. The kernel knows the device is there, since I can see it when I do "lsusb". OpenSuSE x86_64 11.2.

This is the set up I have: PC downstairs by a tv, with 3TB of storage containing my media, connected to the tv too. HTPC upstairs by another tv and connected to it. A few laptops and other desktops around the house which are windows based
I want the downstairs pc to act as a file server and to run my torrent client, it is running Ubuntu desktop version and has xbmc installed too for use with the tv. The upstairs htpc has xbmc live on and will access the media from the file server. What I am looking to do is to be able to log into my ubuntu machine remotely from a laptop running windows so I can manage the files and add torrents for download etc, but for this to be a complete remote session, rather than taking control over what is already being shown on the downstairs pc, like VNC does in windows.
I have two user accounts set up on the main ubuntu machine, the admin account and a media user account which is set to go straight to xbmc after log in. Also how can I make sure that the media drives are automatically mounted to allow access if the admin user is not logged in?

Just moved to Ubuntu from XP. Whole process has gone very smoothly, but left with a small problem (i.e. it isn't actually affecting usability) that I don't seem to be able to fix and can't find on forums/internet. I also have a problem with the Floppy drive, but I've seen that problem elsewhere in the forums.
It's a dual boot system with both NTFS and Ext4 drives. All are visible and fully accessible. I decided to convert one of the NTFS drive to Ext4. That appeared to be successful and was successfully remounted as an Ext4 drive. The drive label is "Data". I did have a bit of a problem getting it remounted so that I could see/use it under my log-in as opposed to just under root. It's at this point I think that I did something to create the problem.
I now have two entries for "Data" in drop down menu for Places. The true one is shown as a standard hard drive icon, but the false one is shown as a different icon - possibly an external drive icon (note that the floppy drive is also showing as the same icon and I can't access that, but I've seen that's a problem elsewhere in the forums).
I can write and read to the true "Data" hard drive. If I click on the other false "Data" icon, I get the message "mount: /dev/sdd1 already mounted or /media/Data busy mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdd1 is already mounted on /media/Data". If unmount the true drive and try to mount the false drive, the system mounts the true drive instead. If I log into nautilus as root, neither the false data drive or the floppy appear in the left hand panel.

I have a problem with my external hdd, I mounted it manually and in the mount table it says ive got rw permissions. But when i try to change permissions it says:
chmod: changing permissions of `whatever': read-only filesystem.
This is my mount table:

So, at the moment I have a 7TB LVM with 1 group and one logical volume. In all honesty I don't back up this information. It is filled with data that I can "afford" to lose, but... would rather not. How do LVMs fail? If I lose a 1.5TB drive that is part of the LVM does that mean at most I could lose 1.5TB of data? Or can files span more than one drive? if so, would it just be one file what would span two drives? or could there be many files that span multiple drives drives? Essentially. I'm just curious, in a general, in a high level sense about LVM safety. What are the risks that are involved?
Edit: what happens if I boot up the computer with a drive missing from the lvm? Is there a first primary drive?

Since RHEL is similar to CentOS posting it here.
Upon booting from DVD, i get the below error: "CentOS CD Not found in any of the media drives. Please insert CentOS CD and press OK."
I have IDE Sony DVD RW AW-G170.
BIOS Setting:
Downloaded the CentOS-5.4-i386-bin-DVD image from centos.org from DVD.torrent using bittorrent file.
When booting from the DVD, it gives me the boot prompt:
Upon pressing enter, the log messages of the boot detect the media drive as: hdc: Sony DVD RW AW-G170 IDE ATAPI CD.
The below steps occur:
1) Select the keyboard type: selected us
2) Select the Language : selected us
3) Select the image:
- Local CDROM
- Hard Drive
- NFS Image
...
...
selected Local CDROM
Then the above error "CentOS CD Not found in any of the media drives. Please insert CentOS CD and press OK."
The booting steps does not ask the for media check step.
The below methods have been tried to solve the problem:
- Burnt the image in another 2 DVDs but the same error "CentOS CD Not found in any of the media drives. Please insert CentOS CD and press OK."
- Upon burning the DVD image , selected the DVD read speed: 8x. Upon burning the DVD selected 18x for burning. and then tried to boot with that DVD
- At the boot prompt entered : linux hdc=cdrom replaced hdc=hdb but the error remains.

I use Suse 11.2. I mounted 5 folders from fstab. 2 of them work but 3 do not. The 3 folders that do not work let me enter them, and they let me see everything. I can even create or delete a folder on them, if I am just browsing with konqueror. The problem is that I have a program that will not read them. It's a program made for my company and apparently it will only read folders that have all of their permissions set to read and write. The program will read the first two because their permissions are set to Owner, Group, and Others, can view and modify content. (The network folders are all windows server 2003 computers). The 3 folders the program will not read are set to Owner can view and modify content, but Group and Others are "can view content" If I try to change those permissions even in root, it tells me that access is denied.

I just bought a new hard drive so that I could convert my XP-only machine into an XP-Ubuntu-Windows 7 triple boot machine.Since the drive is absurdly huge (1 TB) I wouldn't mind throwing ReactOS into the mixtoo.I just found out that master boot records are limited to 4 entries, meaning 4 primary partitions. I had Windows XP set up on my old drive as a boot partition, a program files partition and a media partition. Since I really didn't want to install XP from scratch, I cloned this setup on my new drive.
This leaves me one MBR partition entry for installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and ReactOS. I'd like to avoid having to install XP from scratch like the plague, partly because it's supposed to be a safety net in case things go wrong with my other OS's and because I've invested a lot of time getting it set up exactly the way I like it.Here are the options I've considered and why I don't like them:Install Windows 7 on my media partition. This would work, but I prefer to keep my media partition completely separate from any OS, so that I can reformat an OS partition without affecting my media partition at all.
Use wubi or something to install Ubuntu in the same partition as something else. Again, this is brittle.Move all my media to a logical drive on an extended partition. Create another logical drive on this extended partition for Ubuntu. The problem here is that extended partitions are rather brittle--if you nuke one, it renders the rest useless.Just put the old drive back in my computer and run XP off it. Use the new one for the other OS's. The problem here is that the old drive is slower and uses extra power, generates extra heat, etc.

I had a problem after an update and ended up re-installing Lucid. Now I don't own any of my hard drives. In the "Permissions" tab of properties they say "The permissions of "*" could not be determined". This is becoming a real problem as my the hard drive that has my Home on it is in "disc failure is imminent" mode and I need to copy everything to another drive urgently.
