Ubuntu Networking :: 11.04 Management Of Network Card / Wired/wireless Setup?

May 1, 2011

I am facing a problem with the management of my network card after installing Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit Desktop edition.

There are two Network Cards and one USB adapter which I'd like to drive:

- Ethernet controller Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet (rev 02)
- Ethernet controller Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
- Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187 Wireless Adapter

Actually I need the wireless adapter to connect to the AP, so both of the ethernet card should be disabled. Infact, when I try to access to the AP I must disable the eth0 card by using (sudo ifconfig eth0 down), otherwise the route assigns the default gw ( to the eth0 device and the network is useless.

Networking :: Network Setup - Router - Wireless Router Card ?

Apr 24, 2010

I'm having trouble getting my network set up the way that I want it/had it. You see, when I first set up my network, I just had my cable modem going directly to my standard wired router (A D-Link DI-604), which had DHCP,and was connected to all of the computers on my network. I had one switch hooked up to one of the ports of the router, but this was a regular switch, and it would not try to assign IP addresses, it would just pass through the DHCP info as I wanted.

Now however, my network setup has changed. My room mate and I both got laptops, and we decided that we wanted to have wireless access so we didn't have to constantly plug in to the router.

Now my network is set up like this: The modem is hooked up to the router(DI-604), which is hooked up on the LAN side to our computers, our switch (which is hooked up to 3 more computers), and to a wireless router card (A Gigabyte GN-BC01).

The wireless router card has two jacks for ethernet. One for WAN, and one for LAN. The LAN side we have plugged only into the computer in which the card is installed.

Now the problem is this: The wireless router card comes with DHCP by default, and it's assigning addresses to the laptops and to the computer hat it's in, and worse, the IP addresses are on a different subnet than that of the main dlink router. The Main (dlink) router assigns addresses from (itself) to, while the wireless router card assigns addresses from to (itself).

Because of this, I cannot access services on the wireless network from my wired network or vice versa. The first thing I tried was setting the card to assign addresses from to, however it just said "internal error" when I tried to do this. I decided that this may be because it sees that it was being assigned an address on it's WAN side on the same subnet. So the next thing I tried was disabling DHCP and setting the "LAN IP Address" to, hoping that the DHCP would just go through the card, like a switch. I would have set the LAN IP address to be assigned by DHCP, but this was not an option, so I decided that'd be the best thing to set it to.

Once again however, setting the LAN ip address to an address on the same subnet as that of the IP assigned to it's WAN side caused it to report an "internal error". I verified that this was the issue by setting the LAN address to several other private IP addresses to test (I.E.,,

My question then really is: How do I set up both routers so that I can access services and computers from each network from the other network. Should I set them with different subnets and set the gateway on the wireless network to the main router? To the wireless router card? Should I put them on the same subnet? Will it know how to communicate?

Apr 14, 2010

I have installed ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop. It has a 802.11n wireless card.

The card is 'Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth'

Can you please tell me how can I setup my wireless card in ubuntu 9.10?

I originally installed it with the GNOME desktop, and when I opened firefox i could only connect to [URL]... and [URL], other websites timed out, even if i got to them via search results or URL.

Now, I reinstalled using the KDE desktop because after a little thought I preferred it, but now I can't even connect to these search engines at all. I don't know how to configure the network! It's through the onboard ethernet port, ethernet cable direct to modem.

Im trying to setup multiple domU through the default bridge setup. I am able to access only one of them through the network at a time. If you ping one of the domU it works perfectly but you cannot ping any of the others until you stop pinging the one and even then it takes a bit before you can. Ive looked around for a while and seen similar problems but nothing ever seems quite the same. Im probably missing something really stupid. Or is this the way the bridge is supposed to behave? Do i need to use a routed virtual network?

I do not have the hardware to do this yet. I simply want advice on what route to take before I make the investment. If I had the money I would simply invest in a wireless combo setup, but I unfortunately do not. I do however have an idea. I am currently stuck with a standalone system that is running XP strictly for the use of magicjack. I was thinking I could hook up this combo machine to that computer and network it in via that. However, would the scanning capability only reside in the hardwired computer or could I do a network scan somehow?

General :: Setup For MRTG Network Monitor Tool?

Mar 11, 2010

i have done most of the setup for MRTG network monitor tool.

But i m stuck at configuration part.

the actual MRTG guide says following.

I m little confused about what should i put inplace of

The next step is to configure mrtg for monitoring a network device. This is done by creating an mrtg.cfg file which defines what you want to monitor. Luckily, you don't have to dive straight in and start writing your own configuration file all by yourself. Together with mrtg you also got a copy of cfgmaker. This is a script you can point at a router of your choice; it will create a mrtg configuration file for you. You can find the script in the bin subdirectory.

cfgmaker --global 'WorkDir: /home/httpd/mrtg'
--global 'Options[_]: bits,growright'
--output /home/mrtg/cfg/mrtg.cfg

This example above will create an mrtg config file in /home/mrtg/cfg assuming this is a directory visible on your webserver. You can read all about cfgmaker in cfgmaker. One area you might want to look at is the possibility of using --ifref=ip to prevent interface renumbering troubles from catching you.

If you want to start rolling your own mrtg configuration files, make sure you read mrtg-reference to learn all about the possible configuration options.
