OpenSUSE :: Create An Undeleteable Icon On Gnome Desktop?

Aug 11, 2011

I recently installed a Suse Studio build and trying to customize it. When I login as an ordinary user, there are 2 icons on Gnome desktop (or nautilus); Home and Trash. These appear to be undeleteable and I want an undeleteable Firefox icon on my desktop as well. When I create a Firefox shortcut; it can be deleted no matter what I do; i.e. giving read-only permissions or chown to root. So, I think these desktop icons are different than ordinary app

OpenSUSE :: Did Gnome Integration Change Between SLED 11.1 And 11.2?

Apr 27, 2010

apps that ran and installed just fine under 11.1 don't (seem to) under 11.2.I was running Gnome under 11.1, and have used the same desktop as I moved to 11.2.For example, I was able to install and run the Novell Support Advisor 1.1 under SLED 11.1 just fine. I would need to authenticate as root before the app would run, but it would run just fine.After I upgraded from SLED 11.1 to 11.2, things just don't seem to be as stable. NSA (and other apps) seem to install, but their icons don't appear in the applications folder, and when I login su and then attempt to run, the terminal window usually hangs.

I can't get a CIFS client to install (I see it in the list of installed apps, but it's not present under YAST).Banshee was a beautiful app under 11.1, but I feel like I spend more time working around it's glitches in 11.2 rather than setting it to play and enjoying it's usefulness.The Novell Client (yes, I know, it's not officially supported under 11.2) has caused me enough heartache that I VNC an XP box just to get to files.So anyway, enough whining, what can/should I do to work through these issues? Should I just give up and go back to 11.1? Is it better to burn and re-build rather than upgrade per the OpenSUSE docs? Is there some "magic" log files folder (other than availble via YAST) to see where error messages are occurring so I can troubleshoot the issues better?

Slackware :: Create Mount Points Automatically For Removable Drives?

Jan 9, 2010

At work I use Ubuntu and one nice thing about it is that it creates mount points for removable drives automatically.

In Slackware I can set up XFCE so that it mounts drives when they are plugged in, but only if they're already specified in the fstab (which means I must have used them and set them up in advance).

This is becoming a problem now that removable usb drives of all sorts are so common.

General :: Make GNOME Desktop Auto Recognize The NTFS Partition Of The USB Drive

Jan 27, 2010

How to make my GNOME desktop auto recognize the NTFS partition of the USB drive.

On command line I can do the following perfectly:

Code:

which results

Code:

All files permission on the drive is 777. I can read, I can write, do whatever I want.

But in GNOME Desktop environment, when the USB drive is plugged-in, the partition is auto-mounted with other options:

Code:

All files permission on the drive is now 555. I can't write to it anymore. I saw a post earlier having similar mount result, but this one is USB drive though.

So how to configure GDE mount automatically with my intended mount options?

is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

Debian Multimedia :: Any Possibility To Adjust Gnome To Automatically Mount ONLY USB Devices?

May 27, 2011

i am trying to prevent Gnome from automounting my NTFS partition. Gnome uses for this package gvfs-mount. This package with other small one's is respnsible for automounting USB changeable media like USB sticks. That works fine for me. But I don't want Gnome mount my NTFS partition on my internal storage device, where Debian Squeeze is installed too. Since Squeeze Gnome works with gvfs-mount to bind smb, ftp NTFS in. For binding a whole NTFS partition I am guessing Gnome use ntfs-3g as well. But I don't know exactly. Is there any possibility to adjust Gnome to automatically mount ONLY USB devices?

Ubuntu :: Dragging Firefox Url Icon Fails To Create Desktop/shortcut File

Aug 16, 2011

I'm trying to create a web shortcut (desktop file) by dragging the icon from the Firefox address bar to a Thunar folder or desktop. This worked with older versions of Thunar and Firefox, but now that I'm running Xubuntu Natty (Firefox 5 and Thunar 1.2.1) it fails. Depending on the web site I try, it either creates a file containing the page's html instead of creating a .desktop shortcut file, or fails to create any file at all.

2) If not, is there a tool i.e. GUI to set the mount permissions?

Ubuntu :: Make New Icons Automatically Add To Right Side Instead Of Left Side Of Desktop?

Dec 18, 2010

If a file gets created in the user's Desktop folder, or if a drive is added to the machine and a Desktop icon is correspondingly created, they will by default appear on the left side of the desktop (unless, in the case of the latter, the specific drive has been created before and dragged to the right side, in which case GNOME will remember to put it in the same place).

Because I have a terminal window embedded onto my Desktop in the top left corner and occupying most of the screen), I keep my icons on the right side of the Desktop instead of the left (Mac style) - Any time I add a new drive or a file is sent to the Desktop, however, I have to kill the terminal window to be able to click on the icon, then drag it back to the right side, then restart the terminal.

Is there any way to tweak GNOME so that these icons are added from the top right corner and down instead of from the top left, automatically?

Software :: .desktop Icon Is Not Displayed / Icon Is Not Working In Menu?

Aug 2, 2009

I'm trying to add .desktop file for my application but I'm stuck with very strange problem.I created 48x48 icon for my program called etmmanager.png.I created .desktop file according to specifications:

Code:
[Desktop Entry]
X-SuSE-translate=true
Categories=Application;Utility;X-SuSE-TimeUtility;
Comment=ETM Manager for time logging
Exec=etmmanager
code....

My problem is that icon is not working in menu! I can find my program in Utilities->Time->ETM Manager and this is what I wanted, but there is no icon for the program.

It starts working if I specify absolute path in etmmanager.desktop file like
Code:
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/etmmanager.png
About my system - Opensuse 11.1 KDE 4.2
