The default I/O scheduler at the moment for device /dev/sda is CFQ, and I can change it on the fly to NOOP:

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
I am trying Lubuntu 10.04 as a guest in VMWare Workstation 6.5.4. My host is a Windows XP SP3 PC (soon to move to Ubuntu 10.04). The installation went fine and the vm seems to be working perfectly - all latest updates were applied and all the supplied software works.
However, the only item that is annoying is that Lubuntu always start up with 800x600 screen resolution. I can set the resolution to the one I want (1152x864) using Preference -> Monitor Setting but when I restart the vm again, Lubuntu always defaults to 800x600. BTW, my LCD monitor has a native resolution of 1920x1080 - a screen resolution of 800x600 is simply too small for my needs.
I note that there is no xorg.conf in the /etc/X11 directory and after researching the internet, I also found out that this is normal for the version of X that Lubuntu uses. I also tried out the 'xrandr' command on a console - this also works in setting the screen resolution to 1152x864 but it also is NOT persistent across restarts.how do I make the vm always start up in the resolution I want - 1152x864? I don't want to fiddle around in xorg.conf if this can be avoided.
I have host winxp and guest centos in vmware. how to maximize the whole desktop display in centos so that it will occupy my whole 15" monitor. I already maximize the vmware and centos..nothing happens. If i maximize the centos, it will only maximize in the center screen.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI like very much the Guest Session feature of Karmic, it comes very handy when someone needs to use your computer. However, it's only available if I'm already logged in, it won't show this option at login screen. Is there any way to make this possible? Also, I once tried the guest session and configured its appearance to my taste. The next time I entered, though, the default desktop reappeared. I know this happens because no setting is permanently stored for this session, so the only solution I can think of is to change the default configuration it is loaded from.

This HowTo will help you create an account on the login screen that will log in the same guest-session seen in the user menu. The advantage of this is that it will be an easily accessible guest account, while not preserving any files or changes on logout, and a higher security model for the account. Confirmed to work on 10.04 - 10.10, but the directions are for 10.10
1. Under an existing administrator account, go to the menu entry System --> administration --> Users and Groups.
2. Click Add. you may need to provide a password at this point. Name your new user anything you would like, except guest. The account cannot be called guest, but visitor does nicely. encryption of the account is not needed. This account will be a "booster" account to guest-session.
3. On the next screen, enter a password, and make sure that you click the check box "Don't ask for password on login", Click OK to finish.
4. As an extra precaution, click Advanced settings, when back on the Users and Groups screen, and on the User Privileges tab, uncheck Monitor System Logs.
5. Exit the Users and groups menu, and then log out and into your new account.
6. Once there, make a folder called GuestManager, and in that folder, make a plain text file called Guestmanager.sh, with this code in it :

7. Save that and then right click on it, go to properties, and then go to the permissions tab. On this tab, click "allow executing file as program", and then close that window.

Fill in the name and comment as GustManager, and for the command, enter /home/visitor/GuestManager/GuestManager.sh, where visitor would be the name you picked for the account in step 2. click add, then close
9. Delete all applets and extra toolbars (might want to leave the main gnome menu), and set the background to black or something else bland, and log out. Since this account is just a "booster" none of these toolbars and such will be needed, so removing them saves memory and load time.
i am wondering if it is possible to do this all i can find with google is idea proposals and brainstorms i know i could make a separate account and call it guest user bu that user would get to keep data/settings where as a guest session places a temporary account in the /tmp folder which combined with a ram disk for /tmp would result in some really fast performance since i use a ssd for / which would make the traditional hdd only used for /var also since /tmp would be a ram disk it would be like the guest is using a live cd with security restrictions and performance enhancements on top of this there would be no trace of the guest on my computer after shutdown

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to linux, it was nice to work with linux on virtual machine, but suddenly yesterday when I try to connect using putty from my windowsxp machine its showing network connection error. I dont know what happened. In linux machine ifconfig shows only 127.0.0.1, could not trace problem, guide me to trace the problem.
Previously it used to give 192.168.1.2/192.168.1.3 it used to vary every boot. FTP also stopped working. I am clueless. My system setup:

Basically, the problem is, we have a bunch of computers in a computer lab, that we want to students to access, but not modify in ANY way. That includes backgrounds or whatnot. And after restart, any changes they may have made, change back. Also, they can't have read access to the administrator account on the computer.
This needs to give a permission denied, or something:

The Guest Session is exactly what we are looking for, but try as I might, I can't get it to work. Because, we don't want to have to login as administrators, then activate guest session, just for our students to use the computers. The idea being, we can leave the computers in there, and not worry about the students breaking anything.
One thread I tried was: [URL]. However, using his method, will log the student into the account, and after about 5 seconds, log them back out.

I have 4 VMs on a Linux host, call them A, B, C, D running on Z. I really don't care when A and B come up, but I would like to make sure that D comes up before C.I believe that in VMWare 2.x it's possible to change the boot order. Is this possible in 1.x as well? Is this done in /etc/vmware/vm-list? I see that there are a number of VMs listed there, including some that have long since been deleted.

Centos 5 was set up for me on my server with VMware and XP SP3 as a guest. I have little to no knowledge of centos (or anything Linux) so i tend to leave well alone but i am trying to get a USB printer to work from my networked pcs through XP - Through VMware - Through Centos5 to the USB port on the back of my server. I am reasonably OK with XP but am not a techie so will probably need to be walked through this.
I can see the printer appearing on Centos' equivalent to device manager and when i print everything seems ok with the XP print queue clearing after a few seconds but nothing prints. At a guess i need some sort of software bridge- (is this SAMBA?).

I have annoying problem. My setup is the following: debian Linux, 64 bits, VMWare workstation 7 host, with Windows XP running as guest. From Firefox, or Internet Explorer, I am unable to access few sites, for example nvidia.com, osdir. Basically get connection timed out, on the other hand ping works to those sites. Moreover, Slashdot loads very very slow and sometimes gets horrible text-only version.

I suspect it has something to do with routing on Linux, I recall having similar problem long time ago, which was fixed by setting something in /proc.
I tried setting MTU and TCP window size on Windows lower, but did not help
I have RHEL 5 installed on VMware 6.0 and the host OS is Windows 7. My Host is connected to internet using a wireless connection and works on shared IP. Earlier when I had Windows vista as host I have managed to get the internet connection on the RHEL but do not remember how I managed it. Now I need help in setting the internet connection on RHEL. View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Fedora Core 12 quad-core Linux box. However, when I run VMWare Workstation (running a single virtual XP box, running nothing) it slows to a crawl. The load average jumps from 0.11 to 4 or even 7 when I am using the virtual box. The mouse stops responding within the virtual box, and even on Fedora itself when the load average gets high enough. I can't get any work done and I can't get into "the zone".

I did the upgrade to narwhal and I see the boot-up screen just fine but when I get to the screen to log in to my Ubuntu account this is where Ubuntu freezes up completely and I get nothing out of it at all. I do have VMWare upgraded to the latest version that is available as well.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI can't log into my normal user account anymore, though I can log in with root without any problem. When I enter my normal user name and password, the screen blinks, a black page appears and after a couple of seconds I get the login screen again. I deleted /tmp files but no changes. I tried to login using command mode. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log into root in command mode, then ran init3, then switched user to my normal user and ran startx. It worked and I logged into my normal account, but I can not do this process every time. So, what is the problem? How can I solve this problem? I used to work with my normal user flawlessly. I installed a bunch of software and also copied some folders to my home directory, but I don't know whether these activities caused the problem or not. I'm using KDE4 under openSUSE 11.2.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSince I have upgraded to Lucid (and thus to Mozilla 3.6.6), I am experiencing a bunch of annoyances with Mozilla.
1) logging into my GoDaddy account keeps displaying the login screen and not my accounts page (yes, I checked the password)
2) creating an account in bugzilla resulted in an "Invalid OpenID transaction" error message instead of a confirmation page
3) the [URL] page popped up a parser error instead of the website.
Midori and Mozilla 3.0.8 work just fine. Does anybody else have problems with mozilla 3.6.6 and above?
I'm using 64-bit Fedora 13 on 64-bit VMWare Workstation 7.1 (on Windows 7 Pro) and I'm having an issue with the mouse button. Everything works just fine unless I click and drag off the guest OS window (which accidentally happens more often than you'd think). When I do this, the "button" gets stuck in the down position and there's no undoing it. Resetting the session does not fix the issue - I have to reboot the VM. I do not have any accessibility features turned on.
Obviously, this is kind of a pain. Does anyone know of a solution?
I'm running Ubuntu 9.1 i386 in test with Vmware 2.0.2. I used Radu Cotescu's patch and instructions to get vmware installed. Everything seems to be running fine in the guest machine (CentOS 5), except I can't ssh from the Ubuntu host to the guest machine.
This guest is a clone of one that is running under on my Ubuntu 8.1 host and networking is fine there. I'm wondering if there were changes to routing or bridging in Ubuntu 9.1 to cause this. I've been digging through google for a while, but haven't seen others reporting any issues. This is definitely particular to Karmic Koala though.

My routing table on the Ubuntu 8.1 host differs by the link-local line only, and the guests are exactly the same.I can ssh from the guest into the host, as 192.168.0.2 is the hosts ip on the vm network. The host should be able to ssh to the guest as it does in Ubuntu 8.1.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 kernel supports four I/O schedulers:

- noop
- anticipatory
I read in documentation that the recommended kernel line settings for 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 running as a VMware guest are:
divider=10 notsc iommu=soft elevator=noop
But for single instance databases with dedicated storage the deadline scheduler is recommended. The deadline scheduler reorders I/O to optimized disk heads movement and caps maximum latency per request to prevent resource starvation for I/O intensive processes. I have an Oracle instance on RHEL5 running as a VMware(ESX) guest with dedicated storage. What scheduler is better in my case?
I have a new public mail server running under Vmware Server 2.0 installed on Windows Server 2008. I'm not satisfy about performance, virtual machine has got 3gb of ram and 2 virtual cpu. Physical machine has got one intel xeon cpu 2.4ghz quad core, 8 gb of ram and 3 hdd 500gb raid5. I already set this option: Fit all virtual machine memory into reserved host RAM. How can I increase performance? Are there any kernel build for virtual installation?
