General :: Isolinux Booting Suse 11 Initrd Off Cd?

Jul 29, 2011

I am having trouble booting off a cdrom using isolinux. I see the isolinux prompt and it seems to boot but I run into:

RAMDISK: incomplete write (-28 != 32768 ) 131072000
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,2)

I can't seem to get much debug information either other than the two lines. What do you think I have a problem with?

General :: Grub Booting Entire Partition As Initrd And Running In Memory

Apr 20, 2011

I run alot of Linux running in memory. Mainly by PXE booting a kernel and the entire OS as the "initrd" file.

I have a RHEL6 image running as a VirtualBox guest and the entire OS (minimal) is contained withing 1GB of disk. I wan't to boot the entire /dev/sda1 "/" (its the only partition on the drive, no swap) as the initrd file and run everything from memory. But grub won't let me. So before I try and re-invent the wheel I thought to post here first.

Details. RHEL 6 as guest in VIrtual BOX. configured with 3Gb memory. HD is single partition and known as /dev/sda1.

at the grub console. I issue

root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-19.el6.x86_64 root=/dev/ram0
initrd (hd0,0)

But the grub windows just freezes. Apparently it doesn't like the fact that I've referenced the entire partition (hd0,0) as the initrd. Any thoughts? Or any better boot loader like SYSLINUX?

BTW, I am not worried about the /etc/fstab mentioning /dev/sda1 at this point, I have a fix for that already. I would like to see grub load up the partition as an initrd.

General :: Not Booting Correctly Into SuSE 10.3?

Feb 4, 2011

"Something" happened to my friend's computer, and now he somehow expects me to know how to fix it. Sigh. The symptoms: There are two partitions - a Windows XP partition and a larger partition for SuSE 10.3 it seems. He can boot into the Windows, but not into the SuSE anymore. However, he can boot using the Fail-safe method.

I know this is very vague. but I can't get to the computer at present to check things for myself. Do any of you know what a possible cause of these symptoms could be and how to fix the problem?

Debian :: Make-kpkg --initrd Won't Create Initrd?

May 18, 2010

When I compile a custom kernel with this command: make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers and then install the .deb, there's no initrd in /boot and I have to create it manually. I've thought that the --initrd option should take care about this, but somehow it doesn't.

It behaves like this for about two years at least (since I've compiled my first kernel). Of course, it's no big deal to create it manually, I was just wondering whether do I do anything wrong or whether should I fill a bug report..

OpenSUSE Install :: Custom Build From Suse Studio|missing "initrd-" File?

Dec 2, 2010

If you can access Suse Studio here is thlink to the buildLFS Host - SUSE GalleryGoogle hasn't been friendly and neither has a search on these forums, I don't know which man to read so a finger in the right dirrection (preferably not the middle) would be nice as far as that goesRight now the yast live installer trips up at %84 while saving the boot loader configuration and displays a popup that says An error occurred during initrd creation. /sbin/mkinitrd: illegal optionI then press enter to acknowledge the message and the installation continues without a hitch.

When I go to boot up (no other os installed) grub says it cant find the file initrd- you boot the live cd again you can mount the boot partition and youll find a broken symlink called initrd that islooking for the missing file above.Like I said above, if it an obvious fix, all I need is some direction, I don't mind reading. (been doing that all day)If you need more specifics Id be happy to supply, I'm just not sure whats relevant and don't want to bloat the post.

General :: How To See The Content Of The Initrd Image

Feb 8, 2010

i am using rhel5 and i just wanted to see the contents of the initrd image. I have copied that from /boot/grub and saved in /tmp directory. Then i did the following

#mv initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img.gz
#gunzip initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img.gz
#mount -o loop initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img /mnt

when i gave that, it says "mount: you must specify the filesystem type" Then i included "-t ext2" option in the mount command. Now it says,

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

Then i created a ext2 filesystem and did the same thing. But there is no difference.

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse 11.4-KDE Udevd-work Error While Booting

Jun 25, 2011

I am seeing a udev error message on booting that I have not seen before with LInux and which I cannot interpret. My Suse 11.4-KDE installation is fairly new. My system is a System 76 PanP4 Pangolin that originally ran Ubuntu.Uname -a returns: Linux linux-zcga #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. My video is a Geforce 9300M with an nVidia driver.A Google search turns up the fact that similar error messages have been reported with Fedora, Ubuntu, Meego and Gentoo. These frequently have had something to do with sound and in at least one case the advised correction was to reinstall udev. I can see where bugs were filed but with no clear response. Some of these go back several years, the most recent is within the last few months. I did not see a posting that involved Suse.

1.Can someone tell me what these error messages mean?
2.Does this pose a problem?Everything seems to work normally on my system once I am through the boot process.
3.If this is a problem how does one fix it?

I never had a problem with the suse 10.0 64 bit partition up until now. Is it possible to fix the problem using puppy linux and editing a configuration file? I do not think it is a hardware issue if the other partition on the drive boots up. Would puppy linux be a good way to backup files from this partition or can I mount the partition using the 32 bit os?

Fedora Installation :: Boot Prompt Information Read Automatically From Isolinux.cfg Without User Intervention?

Oct 4, 2009

building an install cd or dvd media that will automatically install the Linux software on a client pc. There is no network connectivity so the client can only be loaded with Linux from CD or DVD media. The crux of the matter is that I can not automatically install the Linux software on client WITHOUT typing linux ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg at the boot prompt.

I want to avoid any user prompts and just have the software install with the RPMS that I need for this client pc at the boot prompt. Actually, when the boot prompt commences, I would like the software install to start with no user intervention. I've tried several different methods in isolinux.cfg, but the OS always wants boot prompt for the cdrom. Can the boot prompt information be read automatically from the isolinux.cfg with out user intervention? I'm looking for the same behavior as a LIVE CD that kicks off with no boot prompts after a few seconds. Here's a copy of my isolinux.cfg

default linux
prompt 1
timeout 600
display boot.msg
F1 boot.msg
F2 options.msg
