General :: Prevent Author New Files Overwrite Changes

Jun 29, 2011

I use software where I have to edit a text file in order to get my custom needs from it. Problem is that when the author puts out an update, it always overwrites my changes and I have to spend hours trying to compare the file, re-edit my changes back in, etc. This happens sometimes as often as once per month.

I've wondered if there might be a linux tool or commands which would look through the new file, then at my old file, changing only the text which already exists while not breaking anything else. Most software authors seem to know how to do this but since mine doesn't, how can I accomplish this on my own?

General :: Windows - Linux: Can't Overwrite Files On Samba Store

Jun 10, 2010

I'm using CentOS 5.5 with smbclient 3.0.33-3.28-el5 (latest version in repo), and I can't overwrite files in my Samba store. I am not the admin for the Windows server that hosts the share, so there isn't anything I can do server side. But I do have write permission to the server. I know the server runs Windows XP or Server 2003; I don't know which. I can delete the file, and then copy the new version over, but I can't overwrite it. Using the cp command I'll get this error:

[jonescb@localhost ~]$ cp foo.txt /mnt/si_storage/foo.txt
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt': No such file or directory`

And if I edit a file on the server using vim, I can save it once, but if I save it again I get this: "/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing This is my /etc/fstab entry for the samba server: // /mnt/si_storage cifs username=myuser, password=mypass 0 0 I can overwrite files just fine on my XP machine. The CentOS box is the only one having problems.

Ubuntu One :: Uploading Files/sync Files Doesn't Work

Aug 23, 2010

OS: ubuntu10.04 LTS running on latest oracle virtualbox. This works: I have opened a ubuntu one account. And I can log into that account. But I have to do so by: clicking 'ubuntu one' in top bar, and click 'account' in prompt that appears. Shouldn't log in take place automatically? Being logged in I'm able to make new folders. And appearently able to enter them (they are empty I quess) If I try to upload a file clicking 'upload file' in ubuntu one. A prompt appears and I choose the file to upload and click 'continue'. The prompt says "uploading" but nothing happens. If I choose a document folder and click 'mouse click right'. And then click 'sync with ubuntu one'. It prompts that it syncs the folders. But nothing happens.

CentOS 5 :: Smbclient Can't Overwrite Files?

Jun 17, 2010

I'm using CentOS 5.5 with smbclient 3.0.33-3.28-el5 (latest version in repo), and I can't overwrite files in my smb store. The CentOS box is merely a client of the smb share, and I am not the admin for the Windows server that hosts the share, so there isn't anything I can do server side. But I do have write permission to the server. I'm 95% certain that the server runs Windows Server 2003.I can create a new file, but if I need to overwrite it I need to delete the file, and then copy the new version over.My Windows XP machine can overwrite files perfectly fine.

Using the cp command I'll get this error: (/mnt/storage/foo.txt already exists)
[jonescb@localhost ~]$ cp foo.txt /mnt/storage/foo.txt
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/storage/foo.txt': No such file or directory`

Ubuntu :: Deleting Individual Files From Disk Image?

Mar 23, 2010

Recently, I made a disk image of my external hard drive (as it had recently failed). I have yet to get it replaced, so I have a .dd file sitting on my computer. Now, I can mount the .dd file so I can access the files, but I cannot delete any of them. I want to be able to copy the files file by file to my normal folders and delete them from the backup file, as my disk isn't large enough for me to copy them all to the folders and just delete the entire file.

TL;DR = Can I/How do I delete individual files from a .dd backup.

Ubuntu :: Logical Volume Sorting Individual Files?

Jun 5, 2011

So I just had a quick question on logical volumes and such with ubuntu. I've been looking into setting up a storage array of 4 2tb hard drives for media storage in my house but have ran into a wall with with sort of array i should use, whether it be setting up a full raid system (raid 5 or 10 most likely) or using LVM for stripping. The one thing with LVM however, is that there is no parity or redundancy built into it in case 1 hard drive fails. I was wondering if it was possible to create something similar to that of LVM stripping, but instead the logical volume is sorted into whole individual files, not stripping them across the array. That way, if one drive fails, sure, i lose the contents of the one drive, but the rest of the content isn't lost and I have no loss of space because there is no inherent parity.

Software :: Combine And Partially Overwrite Text Files?

May 18, 2010

I need to overwrite the first say 50 or so lines of an xml file on an everyday basis. The first 50 lines of the file are always the same and the 50 lines they get replaced with are always the same. Is there a way to create a file with the 50 new lines and somehow copy/merge/overwrite the larger file such that the 50 original lines would be replaced but the remainder of the file would be untouched? This seems simple, there has to be a way to do it. I'm just not smart enough to figure it out.

Ubuntu :: Wget Downloads Corrupt Files; Gwget Doesn't Work At All?

Dec 26, 2010

In order to download files from a particular website, I have to include a header containing the text of a cookie, to indicate who I am and that I am properly logged in. So the wget command ends up looking something like:Code:wget --header "Cookie: user=stringofgibbrish", this does work in the sense that the command does download a file of the right size that has the expected name. But the file does not contain what it should--the .zip files cannot be unzipped, the movies can not be played, etc Do I need some additional option, like the "binary" mode in the old FTP protocols?I tried installing gwget; it is easier to use, but has no way to include the --header stuff, so the downloads never happen in the first place

It ever so usefully doesn't tell me what those packages are though! - It'd be nice to have more useful error messages or the ability to click to install them...

Anyway, what do I have to do to get this going again?! I've installed everything to do with samba, webdav that I can find but still no cigar...

General :: Newbie Being Harassed By Password Prompts?

Jul 12, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu last night on a partition, and so far..There is one thing that may be a deal-breaker for me though: It seems that I am always prompted for a password!!!! When I first start my machine up...PASSWORD! O-K, once a day wouldn't be so bad...but if I let my display turn off while I'm away from the 'puter...I come back, and...PASSWORD?! Every time I try to do anything on the system....PASSWORD?!

I did a few things that I thought might solve the problem- I checked some boxes here and there, like "automatically log on" and made myself an administrator....but no matter what I do, I'm plagued by the password prompt 600 times a day and i can't take it!!!

Is there any way to stop this nonsense? This is WORSE than Windows UAC crapola!! (at least with that, you just have to click a button)- As much as I am loving Ubuntu....if there is no way to disable this password nonsense, I'm afraid I'll be heading back to Vista. I'm the only person who uses my computer (Although I think my dogs were playing on it while i was out fixing the tractor today...)- so I just need to know if there's a way to get rid of all this password-protected stuff?
