I am using Ubuntu 11.04. I am also using xampp 1.7.4.It always says it needs to be run as root, however some people have mentioned that it poses a great security risk.So how do i run xampp without being root?
I am trying to ssh into my server from the command-line without including the username in the url. I do not want it to send any username, as it currently takes the active account and sends that as user.ex:
ssh server.com -> (doesn't send default username)
instead of [URL] I would want to input username directly into the server, just like it is done using putty on windows. he wants to be prompted for a username, rather than having to provide one when connecting - but I don't really see the utility in such a thing. - birryree Sep 8 at 17:41
This is my first time on this forum. I am a statistician. I am trying to subset a large dataset by specifing the starting & end line. The dataset is pretty large (more than 300 million lines), containing around 1.2 million lines for a person. So I would like to split the dataset into per person consecutively. I tried wrap r codes, but R seems to have to read from top to where I want although I specified that it should skip the lines that other tasks have read. So the memory is increasing with the task ID. Finally I got kicked out by the administer.
I guess that shell may do it much simple and elegently. First I thought of "split" command. But the the file has a header of 10 lines. So I can't split it into even size chuncks.
At the Command Line Prompt I am able to start some Applications (such as openoffice.org or evolution) and the command line prompt re-appears after program is launched and I can continue working in that Terminal. However, other Applications, such as Totem or Blackboard will launch from the Terminal but the Prompt does not re-appear. Where Totem is concerned I get a message stating "sha module is deprecated use hashlib module instead". Where Blackboard is concerned the command line does not reappear. I have to use Ctrl + C to get the command line back but this closes the application as well! Or, I have to open a new Terminal. why some applications will start from the command line and others do not? How do you get the prompt back (other than q or Ctrl + c) thanks to all and kindest regards ( I am using Ubuntu 9.04)
I'm studying Information Technology and doing Linux as part of it. One of the questions in my text book is: Describe three different ways to start a command line interpreter when using the Gnome desktop of openSUSE Linux. I can't for the life of me make sense out of it.

I've read up some of the posts on this forum, but can't seem to find an answer. I have a web service within an Apache Tomcat instance installed on a Redhat linux server. I only have shell access to the server, and need to monitor outbound network traffic from my web service. Is there a unix command that will allow me to monitor all outbound traffic? I'm thinking fiddler, but a unix version? I've heard of things like ntop and iptraf, but I don't think those will help me in this instance.
Whenever I try and use php from the command line, I get this message:PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib64/php/modules/imagick.so' - /usr/lib64/php/modules/imagick.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0The problem isn't the missing module, it is the warming message itself -- it is breaking scripts that rely on the output.I tried shutting off errors, changed my error reporting to:
i can't access to localhost with firefox although yesterday I could installing XAMPP successfully and access to localhost. Now when i enter to file:///opt/lampp/htdocs/index.php this message is shown :"Something is wrong with the XAMPP installation
Yesterday i finally got around to installing my graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 8400M CS) on fedora 12 by using the command yum install kmod-nvidia the terminal then told me that it installed correctly so i rebooted my system. Now when i boot up into fedora, it loads and when the sign in window is about to appear instead my screen shows random colors all over the place. I am hoping someone can tell me how to remove this via the command line prior to actually starting fedora.
I'm trying to install Xampp on my virtual Fedora 14 desktop. When I open the terminal, sign in as administrator, and yum install Xampp I repeatedly get the message, "Child returned status 2, setting up Install Process, no package Xampp available" I get the same message after I download from a different mirror.
I have suse10 64bit and I was setting up SVN server on it. After all required setup while reloading apache2,its giving the error:
httpd2-prefork: Syntax error on line 113 of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Syntax error on line 31 of /etc/apache2/sysconfig.d/loadmodule.conf: Cannot load /usr/lib64/apache2/mod_dav_svn.so into server: /usr/lib64/libsvn_subr-1.so.0: undefined symbol: apr_memcache_add_server
I've used NoMachine's NX software for some time, but on one of my machines it simply will not work. At first it did, but now when I log in it authenticates, starts downloading a session, but then drops dead. There is no hint of what the problem may be except in /var/log/messages on the server machine:
User 'bill' from '192.168.1.1' logged out. 'NXLogin::reset'
Notice that it's a login reset, after authentication went fine. Researching this I find the problem is often caused by a missing fixed font, which is remedied with an: # apt-get install xfonts-base --reinstall but that doesn't help. I have completely deinstalled and purged the three Nomachine packages on the server, deleting all associated directories, and reinstalled them, but no help. From my client machine I can log into a NX session just fine, so I'm sure it's not the client machine. The Linux version of this software has a limit of 2 sessions, and I suspect the server may have some bogus sessions open, but where? I've done a purge and deleted /usr/NX and /home/bill/.nx so where else could this be?
I am using using Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon) dhcp server ver: dhcp-3.0pl2-6.14
I am trying to bind macid 00-21-6B-A1-C9-4C & 00-15-00-1D-AD-57; but it give, when I start dhcp service, I get the following error messages. I am sure macid are absolutely correct. Following the error message I get.

I am loading the file in Fortran. File looks something like this (shown below) I am interested in Velocity values and not Pressure values. Is there a way to code in Fortran which finds the staring LINE of Velocity values and ending LINE of values or I have to manually find the lines? IN this case it should return Starting line : 9 Ending line: 11
having a weird problem with my wireless connection on a Dell Latitude E6400 laptop. This machine has a Dell 1510 half-card. It uses a Broadcom chipset.I've gotten to the point where fedora sees the card, and I can create wireless connections. But every time I try to connect to a network, it scans, connects, and disconnects several times, until it gets a completely bogus IP address, that has nothing to do with any of the networks onnect to. It is always "10.42.43.1", yet I have no static configuration for that address.
An a stable FC13 system, after resolving deps and downloading rpms, 'yum update' aborts with this single error message:Transaction Check Error:installing package kernel-PAE-184.108.40.206-124.fc13.i686 needs 801KB on the /boot filesystem.Silly thing is, I have at least 52MB available on /boot.An important datapoint is that I resized the boot partition since the initial install from 64MB to 128MB, which makes me think perhaps yum or anaconda recorded the original partition size, and is not looking at the current (correct) size of /boot.
During Slackware 13.1 setup, I chose the hostname stella-sl2. This hostname is also the one that the system is displaying before I configured network access. After configuring wired network access to my Apple Time Capsule, my hostname suddenly changed to INTERFACE='eth0'. As a result I'm noticing some very strange things, like the login prompt which has become "INTERFACE='eth0' login: ".
After configuring wireless network access to the Time Capsule, the hostname changed to "INTERFACE='wlan0'". Note that, during boot, wlan0 is brought up AFTER eth0.
Until now, it was only a minor annoyance, it didn't prevent anything from happening, internet connection was not affected. But now I'm configuring sendmail which needs to talk to a relay SMTP server, and sendmail "HELO"'s itself using the bogus hostname:
Probably this is caused by the Time Capsule not adhering to standards. However, the Time Capsule's firmware is the latest version, so I cannot fix this. Is there a way to prevent dhcp from changing the hostname? How can I make sure that the hostname that I configured during setup remains active?
