I want to generate a temporary random list from a directory of files and then determine the size of an arbitrary block of files from this list (say 1-25 or 26-50) and add their names to a file along with some other info for each name. I can generate a random list with file sizes like this: ls -l | sort -R | cut -d " " -f 6 but i'm not sure how to add up the sizes of just a certain block of these files and at the same time save the file names.

Definitely can't double click it, or right-click to delete or simply delete. It just freezes. I can't see any of the text of the email, but I can see that there is a .tiff attachment.

I've poked around in the .evolution/ folders and can't find the right thing to delete to get rid of this specific email.

Software :: Apache 2 And LDAP Authentication Unpredictable

Nov 4, 2010

I have an issue with Apache2 and ldap authentication. Here are the specs:
Linux 2.6.32-24-generic i686 GNU/Linux Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.3.2-1ubuntu4.5 with Suhosin-Patch configured

I have installed our site onto a newer server as we were previously running SLES 9.3. The site has installed correctly, however, It seems to be serving the pages a hell of a lot slower than SLES (eventhough the specs etc are much improved). The main problem seems to be with Ldap - sometimes taking 2 or 3 minutes before authenticating/serving the user - and sometimes one minute it works, another minute it doesn't! We know it's a problem specific to this Ubuntu machine, as the older server has no issues with ldap whatsoever. Also, sometimes the ldap authentication fails all together with a timeout, resulting in a 500 status code. I'm not sure whether this a problem with the apache config, the network settings or the server setup. We know ldap itself is fine.

Here's the /etc/apache2/sites-available/default config for ldap. Are these directives correct? (I know a lot of changes were made between apache2 and apache2.2 that may affect this config):
ScriptAlias /home/ "/var/www/cgi-bin/"
<Directory "/var/www/cgi-bin/">
AuthType Basic
AuthzLDAPAuthoritative On
AuthBasicProvider ldap
AuthName "Active Directory Authentication Required."
AuthLDAPURL "ldap://x.x.x.x:3268/DC=xxxxxx,DC=com?userPrincipalName?sub?(objectClass=*)" NONE
AuthLDAPBindDN "" AuthLDAPBindPassword xxxxxxxx
require valid-user Options +ExecCGI -Includes AllowOverride None

Here's some examples of some of the log messages we have been receiving:
1. This one occurs upto ten times in a row when the client is being authenticated:
[Thu Nov 04 12:47:19 2010] [debug] mod_authnz_ldap.c(377): [client x.x.x.x] [2892] auth_ldap authenticate: using URL ldap://x.x.x.x:3268/DC=xxxxxxx,DC=com?userPrincipalName?sub?(objectClass=*), referer: http://x.x.x.x/home/page

2. This is output when the authentication works:
[debug] mod_authnz_ldap.c(474): [client x.x.x.x] [2734] auth_ldap authenticate: accepting, referer: http://x.x.x.x/home/page

3. And this one is always output after the error above. This one is more interesting. What does this mean exactly? And why does it say 'declining to authorise' directly after saying 'accepting'? Surely this makes no sense:
[debug] mod_authnz_ldap.c(546): [client x.x.x.x] [2939] auth_ldap authorise: declining to authorise (no ldap requirements), referer: http://x.x.x.x/home/page

4. This one is output when the authentication attempt times out (after 10 outputs of error number 1):
[warn] [client x.x.x.x] [3165] auth_ldap authenticate: user authentication failed; URI /home/page [LDAP: ldap_simple_bind_s() failed][Can't contact LDAP server], referer: http://x.x.x.x/home/page

Server :: Unpredictable 403 Responses For Image-parsing PHP Script?

Jan 14, 2011

I've got a page with an elaborate javascript in it (imageflow) that is meant to emulate the apple coverflow that you see on iPhones. It wasn't my idea to use it but I must fix it.

This elaborate javascript, in order to show reflections of an image, makes use of a PHP script that will take an image as input, invert it vertically and create a reflection image dynamically. The script is called reflect2.php.

The problem I'm having is that the reflect2.php script is unpredictably returning 403 (forbidden) or 404 (not found) errors sporadically. The behavior will vary for a given image so it's apparently got no relation to the image format. For example, I will load my page and I'll get some 403/404 for certain urls (which correspond to images in my page):

FIRST ATTEMPT - only one bad reflection image url

The second time I load the same page, that previously broken image will be fine but this other one will be broken

The third time, all the prior images are fine and this image, which was fine before, is not 403:

I don't know why a given request to reflect2.php might result in a 403 reponse. As far as I can tell there is no code in the script that would result in such a header being sent for any reason whatsoever. I'm wondering if this might be a problem with Apache somehow. I'm on thin ice when it comes to Apache configuration values but perhaps there's a limit in the simultaneous connections permitted, the number of PHP threads available, or the keep-alive values or something?

And when ever slave receives 29 bytes all the memories to which my pointers are pointing get changed. This problem is only when I am sending data from the server to slave, while sending data from slave to server I am facing no such issue.

General :: Command Based Email Client To Send Email Through Secure Smtp?

Jul 26, 2010

In my Windows environment, I use email client such as Microsoft Outlook to connect to our email server to send email with the following configuration:

Incoming server (POP3): 995 - (requires with SSL)
Outgoing server (SMTP): 465 - (use encrypted connection SSL)

And the mail server requires user ID login and do I setup a text command based email client in my Linux (Centos 5.1) to send out email through the existing email server above, which is in another machine? The email client has to be text command based because I need to use command line to send notification email from anothar application installed in my Linux (Centos 5.1) Since the email client will only be used to send email notification, I don't require setting up of an email server in my linux.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Reboots Causes Unpredictable Enumeration Of Ethernet Drivers Causes Eth0 To Be Random?

Mar 20, 2009

I have several systems experiencing this issue, but the "worst case" system at the moment is a system where there are 2 dual-port PCI-X e1000 cards, and two on-board e1000e PCI-express card. What happens is maddening. If the /etc/sysconfig/hwconf is removed, and kudzu is not run, and the 6 interfaces each have a corresponding script:

Now what happens defies explanation. The only way I can be sure to make the e1000e first-listed-in-pci-order e1000e device always eth0 is to remake the initrd and add e1000e to the initrd. If I do not do that, eth0 might be the onboard night, it can also be the first port on either of the dual port cards. So eth0, eth2 and eth4 all take turns being eth0. This was not an issue in the EL-5.1 timeframe. This is certainly new to the EL-5.2 timeframe and thus far is not possible to control because the system does not load eth0's driver alias in order, and the enumeration of the PCI devices causes what seems to be random labeling of the first interface.

This is a particular problem in that identical hardware systems will come up with different eth0 interfaces , and on a single system, without the /etc/sysconfig/hwconf (which calls "eth0" something different from what was originally in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 HWADDR directive).I need as little auto-magic as possible, I can live with PCI-bus order and driver load order is the order ethernet devices appear in, I cannot use the software in a state where what is "eth0" is randomly determined and the only way I can nail it down is to run kudzu, generate a hwconf AND brand the network interfaces in the network-scripts with HWADDR. I've been using EL since 6.2 and this is the first time I've ever encountered a situation where the enumeration rules (which are ancient at this point) over-ridden by something.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): EL-5.2 series. The random enumeration of PCI devices and the subsequent assigning of eth0 to a random NIC is not on every reboot, and does not seem tied to a power off scenario vs a simple reset or warm reboot. Over the course of 0 reboots , eth0 should have moved between 2-3 times.Packages that seem relevant.

The two options I've come up with are (1) notify-send/pynotify which lets me pop up a notification bubble in the top right of my screen which is perfect, but can't seem to include a text entry field; and (2) zenity and similar which bring up a window with a text field, but steal focus when they do.

Networking :: Port Forwarding To Arbitrary Address?

Feb 8, 2010

Is it possible to forward a connection to a port to a completely unrelated external address? For example, I want to redirect ssh traffic to a.b.c.d to w.x.y.z. If w.x.y.z were an internal address and the machine was the router, this would just be plain old NAT port forwarding. But what if w.x.y.z is not an internal address? The reason I want to do this is I want to reassign a domain name from ip address A to B, while allowing users to still ssh into A by using the [URL] domain name. Is this unreasonable? (I am guessing it is unreasonable, since the A wouldn't have it's gateway set to B, as is the case if A were in B's NAT'd internal network.)

Ubuntu :: Edit Startup Scripts To Add An Arbitrary Command?

Oct 11, 2010

sometimes you want to run a command every time computer boots up. In DOS there is "autoexec.bat" in windows - "Startup" menu and I'm sure that there is a similar thing exists for Ubuntu, but that's not what I'm after. These things above will run a command when a user logs on. I want to run a command when a pc boots up. This is not straightforward in Windows, but since I'm a windows guy I can do this. I can install a command as a service with srvany utility that will make sure it will execute on boot up.Now I want to do a similar thing in ubuntu. how do I edit startup scripts in ubuntu to add an arbitrary command? I need to run the command in the context of a particular user, so I normally do it like this:

sudo -u myServiceUser -i myService

But I want as little downtime as possible and sometimes it takes sometime to find out that there has been a reboot, get to a computer and run the command manually. If I could run this automatically on bootup I wouldn't have this problem.

General :: Minimize Typing When Frequently Changing Directories?

Aug 4, 2010

What are some good Linux commands to make switching between different directories on the command line easier?

I often have to switch between different directories with long names, e.g.

Typically, I use tab completion, so it's something like this:

But it's annoying because all these names are so similar, so tab completion doesn't really save much work.

What tricks do you use to minimize typing in such situations?

I do use pushd and popd sometimes, but here it won't help much because I don't visit the directories in a given order.

For a nice solution, see the accepted answer to my other, related question. Basically, just create an alternative cd command:

function cd2 { select a in $1*; do cd $a; break; done }

It will list all possible completions at once:

And you can pick one by typing its number.

Ubuntu :: BASH Script - How To Stop Loading Files At Arbitrary Number

Aug 9, 2010

I have the following code in bash script:
# bash until loop
until [$COUNT -gt 2]; do
pq A$COUNT [Pemptus].pq &

I did this because I'm that much of a Progress Quest geek that I wanted to have a huge group on the online server, so I decided to make a script that would open all the files for me rather than having me do it manually. I created some characters with the boring name of A1, A2, etc. When I ran the above script, it went into a continuous loop and I had to halt it, then run sudo killall pq.exe to eliminate the 500 or so Progress Quest windows that popped open. Anyway, what is wrong with my script that I can't seem to get it to stop loading files at an arbitrary number? I want to get this part finished before I make any more boring named characters.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ping To Offline Host Returns Arbitrary Ip Address?

Mar 17, 2011

A brief description of my network:It is a small home network consisting of an Ubuntu 10.04LTS server edition, an Iomega ix2 NAS, a WinXP pro server and several family laptops. This is all routed through a Netgear WNDR3300 home router. All are assigned IP's via DHCP and all but the laptops are static (via DHCP though). The WAN address/DNS is assigned via DHCP from my ISP.The problem:When one of the machines is offline, Ubuntu does not resolve the netbios name correctly. No surprise here. But what is happening is that it is finding some arbitrary machine on another network. Below is what a ping to an offline host reveals:

ping -c3 hostname

Programming :: Convert An Arbitrary Binary File Into A Executable File?

Feb 18, 2010

In a project I'm working on with a few other people, I got the task of writing an assembler. The last thing I do is convert the commands into a binary representation, and jam it into a file. Now one of my teammates said he'd like to be able to "reference" the code within another program. He said he'd be able to do this if the file I output is a Linux object file. I'm thinking it'd also work as an executable. Anyway, he said he'd like to be able to grab the file and reference the binary by address. I'm still fuzzy on this, and if you're confused with what I said here, please tell me so I can ask him for better details.Anyway, I'm aware that gcc can compile files to ".o", but that's only for C/C++, and my file is just binary. I'm also aware of "ld", but I haven't seen any use of it to help me. I'm happy to hear suggestions as to what I can do. If anything, I think I'll implement a few functions to grab the bits and hand them to him in an array or something.
