General :: Unable To Mount DVDs On Gentoo?

Jan 31, 2010

I'm unable to mount any dvd on my HP 6735s laptop running Gentoo (with combined stable (+) and testing (~) ebuilds). Here's everything that I can come up with: $uname -a Linux aiur #6 SMP Thu Jan 28 17:02:59 CET 2010 x86_64 AMD Turion(tm)X2 Dual Core Mobile RM-70 AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

NOTE: -aiur-r5 is my custom kernel name. I am having this problem with all the kernels since 2.6.31. I use the vanilla kernels from and compile them with some custom settings using menuconfig.

$ ls -l /dev/{cd,dvd,scd,sr}*

OpenSUSE :: Burn DVDs But Cannot Mount Them?

Feb 9, 2010

I am able to burn DVDs with either Brasero or k3b, but opensuse then cannot mount them .

Those DVDs do contain the burned data since I can see it and read it on a Mac...

On openSUSE, I get the following error when inserting the DVD :

I added my user to 'disk' and 'cdrom' groups, but to no avail.

Here's the output from dmesg :

Ubuntu :: Last Few Burned DVDs Won't Mount?

Jul 30, 2010

I've been backing up some data recently because I'm planning to upgrade to 10.04. It had been going well until today. I burned a couple DVDs, tested them, and they were fine. I burned another one, tested it, and it wouldn't mount. Got the following: "Unable to mount media. There is probably no media in the drive." (Was using K3b).

I tried the same one again, this time using GnomeBaker. Seemed to burn alright, but once again would not mount when I tested it. So, I thought maybe it's just this one particular folder. I tried to burn a DVD with completely different data. Same thing, seemed to burn OK, but again it will not mount.

I went back and re-tested the DVDs that worked OK earlier today, and these ones are still mounting. Any ideas? Did my burner suddenly go bad? Or does someone know of any other possibilities that hopefully could be fixed? -using Verbatim 16x DVD-Rs (burned on 8x)-Lite-On SHW-160P6S

-Ubuntu 8.10
-755 MB RAM
-Intel Xeon CPU 1.70GHz
-used no multisession (or finalized in Gnomebaker)
-used linux+windows filesystem

-I was burning mostly video files (.avi, a couple of .wmv, couple of text files, subfolders with other .avi, etc.)--basically the same type of data whether they could mount or not.

Hardware :: Some CDs / DVDs Do Not Automatically Mount

Jun 5, 2010

I have checked out 'similar threads' to no avail. I am using Mandriva 2010 on /dev/sda6. I have two Pioneer CD/DVD drives. Some data CDs/DVDs automatically mount. Some do not show up in Dolphin's 'Places'. I tested many. Age of disk, brand name and whether pen parked gave no significant correlation. Using PCLinuxOS 2010 (live disk) created the same problem - not altogether surprising. But using Ubuntu 9.04 (live disk) created no problem.

Booting with slightly different kernel versions solved nothing. Using Windows XP or Mandriva 2009.1, both on other partitions, created no problem but when I tried Ubuntu 10.04 (live disk) I had 'no signal'. I have just put in a new Radeon (later than HD 2000) video card (fglrx) so I wondered if Ubuntu does not like it but this issue is unimportant - if Mandriva 2010 can be tamed. What did correlate was that both drives either recognised or both ignored any particular disk. Manual mounting as root works okay but my wife is not comfortable with the CLI.

The fstab file is below:
# Entry for /dev/sda6 :
UUID=14353eb6-82ff-45cc-ae64-8eed13800b46 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/sr0 /media/cdrom auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
/dev/sr1 /media/cdrom1 auto umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
# Entry for /dev/sda5 :
UUID=07e9f3ee-d92e-4696-b762-03a07ed102d2 swap swap defaults 0 0

I checked but could not positively identify this issue as a known bug in Mandriva 2010.

Ubuntu :: Mount Encrypted Ubuntu Partition Onto Gentoo

Mar 8, 2010

ive recently switched to Gentoo as my primary OS - the only problem im having so far is getting my ubuntu partition to mount, aparantly it is encrypted, although i cannot remember ever doing this. It is an ext4 filesystem. When I do

It mounts, but when I cd to /media/Ubuntu/home/dean all I see is a blank README.txt and Access-Your-Prive-Data.desktop files. Is it possible for me to mount my ubuntu partition to be read / written to in gentoo? If not, how do I go about removing the encryption? (I still have access to the ubuntu install)

Ubuntu :: Randomly: No Audio - Can't Mount USB Flash/DVDs - Can't Shutdown

May 10, 2010

I have just installed Lucid i386 on an intel Core2Duo. Everything seems to be OK but about a third of the times I boot the system the following happen:

1) aplay -l reports no soundcards found and therefore I have no sound whatsoever

2) I cannot mount any USB Flash drives or DVD discs and I keep getting "Not authorized" error messages plugging them in.

3) The system won't reboot/shutdown by the gnome applet. Instead, it will drop back to the login screen asking my login. Furthermore, it won't even shutdown from there! Only a poweroff or reboot from command line can work.

4) The gnome applet "Indicator applet session" only shows "Log out, Restart, Shutdown". Suspend and Hibernate options are missing.

Furthermore, it seems that I am the only one who has these issues. My sound card is an onboard HDA Intel although this seems to be that something else dies taking some major subsystems down with it. Any ideas?

/proc/asound/cards shows:

0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfe028000 irq 23
but: aplay -l
aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unable To Play DVDs On XBMC

Aug 30, 2010

I regularly use XBMC on my htpc. Everything seems to work just fine except that I cannot watch DVDs with it. It just never detects a DVD. If I insert a DVD with XBMC running, it just lets me browse the files. If I select the video files it plays some of them (depending on the DVD apparently). If I click on the play button it says that no disk is detected. There is nothing that I can see in the log file and seems relevant. I really don't know what to do. The computer is an HP z555. I just modified it by adding more ram and I changed the video card for an NVIDIA 8400GS. It is running Ubuntu Lucid and XBMC 9.11 installed from the PPA repository. The dvds play well with totem, vlc and mplayer

How do I go about fixing this? I was under the impression that the ubuntu restricted extras would break fluendo, which is why I did not install them. Although during the install I did tell it to download the extra software there.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Unable To Recognize Bd-re Dvds On Blu-ray Writer?

Aug 26, 2010

I have installed the LG BE08LU20 on five Centos servers during the past three months. Two HP ML115, two Dell T110 and mine which is an older Dell Dimension. All except one of the Dell T110 work fine. The BE08LU20 drive is used for 50Gb backups using mondoarchive. On the problem machine which has just been installed from scratch again, it will quite happily mount cd and dvds but not 50Gb BD-RE. I take the same BD-RE disk which it objects to and load it on my identical be08lu20 on a Dell Dimension with Centos 5.5 and it is recognized and allows writing. I swapped my working drive for the problem one but it makes no difference. The 'faulty' drive works perfectly correctly on mine. The OS is Centos 5.5 I have used the same DVD to install three machines with it. Two work including mine, but not the T110. Another customer with T110 also has a be08lu20 and mondoarchive with bd-re disks and theirs worked from the start. They have Centos 5.3 and up-to-date patches, but it should make no difference I've tried both usb and e-sata the result is the same. The centos 5.5 has kernel

If I load a bd-re disk in the drive and mount it - this is what I get
[root@localhost log]# mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
This is the log
Aug 25 00:33:17 gilmartin1 kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 2096896
Aug 25 00:33:17 gilmartin1 kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 524224

There was another problem with this particular machine. I could install Centos, configure Samba and join the users to the domain without a hiccup. Then in the small hours of the morning (not always the same time) it just locked up, no kbd, no mouse, no display, no disk active, no network. Only solution was switch off and it would come up again quite happily with nothing logged and run without a problem for another 20-24 hours. Dell eventually agreed to replace the motherboard. I installed Centos again from scratch. It's been fine all week. The blu-ray problem has been there from the start, and has NOT been solved by the new motherboard.

General :: Gentoo System Keeps Crashing Every 6 Hours?

Jul 12, 2010

I was installing "wine" last night and since I knew it was going to take a while I closed the lid of the laptop and turned it upside down on the floor. (I always turn the laptop upside down when not using it otherwise might overheat)When I woke up this morning roughly 8 hours after I went to sleep the machine was turned off.Using the "last -x | grep shutdown | head -1" it stated that it went down at roughly 6 hours from when I went to sleep. The program I was installing got finished installing but I never set up an auto-shutdown program or anything of the sort.If this isn't a problem with linux then its a problem with my bios. If its a problem with my bios I will just have to live with it because my bios is locked. /var/log/messages says this:

General :: Swap On Gentoo Build From Ubuntu?

Feb 16, 2010

I am building gentoo through a fully installed Ubuntu system. My swap partition is in use by the Ubuntu system so when I use the mkswap command I get that the partition is already in use. I expected this but I was wondering if postponing the mount of swap until after I have booted into the gentoo system would cause any problems. Am I going to have to edit a bunch of files if I mount my swap later?? Also, I didn't see any manuals mentioning building a gentoo system from a fully installed system, is that going to cause any problems? This is my first gentoo installation, so I'm not really experienced with gentoo. I didn't think that building from a full install would be any different than a live cd other than more resources are already in use. I'm not actually having problems with install. I just want to make sure I wont.

Places-Computer shows drive as "array". System-Administrator-Disk utility gives me everything blank apart from State : not running, not enough componets to start. Now there is a button under this "Start Array". Can I simply just click this or is there more to it than that as I don't want to lose anything on the drive.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Lucid System Upgrade : Now Unable To Burn DVDs / Enable It?

May 3, 2010

Applied the Lucid Lynx 10.04 over the weekend.
Since then - I am unable to burn DVDs, although I can successfully read DVD's.
Everything worked fine before the upgrade.
Under Lucid Lynx I am able to burn CD's (both data files and .ISO) so it isn't the hardware.

I have tried Brasero and k3b as burners - they issue messages that the burner doesn't like the medium, which is standard DVD-R.
Bear in mind that I could burn similar DVDs *before* the upgrade...

Any help or suggestions on how to fix this please?
