General :: Track File Opening Attempts From A Process?

Aug 23, 2011

I am running an Ubuntu(10.04) box and I am attempting to understand an error in a program.I don't have access to the source of this program, but I know it isn't working properly because it cannot find a particular file. I was wondering if it would be possible to monitor what file are accessed(more specifically denied access) by a process. My first idea was to breakpoint on fopen, but I didn't have any success.

General :: Opening Emails In Hotmail Account, Running Back Track 4

May 17, 2011

First thing I will say is I am new this site and computers in general. I have pc and am running back track 4. Today the computer shut off, maybe an over heat. I restarted it and it turned off again even before the reboot finished. I put an additional cooling fan in front of the air intake and the computer is staying on but now will not open the emails in the my hot mail account. It seems to open the account, I can see what is in my in box just can not open them. Moving the curser over the unopened email usually made what is in task bar at the bottom of the page change. As of now it continues to say "Done" in stead of showing a task. Moving the curser over other things on the same page will make the task bar say "javascript" only.

General :: Opening Text File After Doing /dev/null

Dec 8, 2010

I ran a program that writes continuously from 1 every line. After some time I ran '/dev/null > temp' Problem1: bash: /dev/null: Permission denied (Yes, the permissions of /dev/null are correct ... crw-rw-rw-. I removed and created it again, but no change) I used 'cat temp' to see the contents and first few lines deleted (working correctly). Problem2: I can't open the file (with double click or with any graphical editor like gedit)

Apart from these problems, I have another question... Is there a way to trim a active log file to say 80% without affecting any logs that server might be writing.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Track The Number Of Requests That A File Gets Downloaded And Viewed ?

Apr 10, 2011

I want to track the number of requests that a file gets downloaded and viewed.

What I have is mp4 files on the server and they could either get played in flash player or downloaded via mobile or whatever.

I need to see how many times that files gets downloaded or viewed. Since its in a php page I am able to track the number of views. But I want to able to track the direct downloads.

I was thinking something along the lines of htaccess redirect to php then to file.

But that would mess up the player from playing the file I would think. I am not sure how to make that happen with the htaccess either though.

General :: How To Determine What File Tripped Up Tar Process

Feb 8, 2010

I am writing, well actually enhancing, a script to do a daily backup of important data on my PC to a second hard drive.I wish to tar my home directory to a single file - and will probably use gzip as well.So I decided to work out the correct tar syntax in a terminal first - here is what happened.I opened a terminal window.I cd to a directory not part of my home directory.I issued the command..Quote: tar -cvf mytar.tar /home/ken tar processed a bunch of files, the last being .netrc.I examined the tar file and it contains .netrc.The contents of .netrc are correct.I scrolled back through the list of files in the terminal window and do not see any error messages.I guess the question is... how do I determine what file tripped up the tar process?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rhythmbox: Editing Track Name Changes File Size Drastically?

Feb 21, 2010

I changed the case of one letter ('N' to 'n') in a track name using Rhythmbox and the result is a file which is 7727 bytes smaller than the original (I saved a copy of the original file before editing the track name). The file is in ogg/vorbis format (160 Kb/s). I changed the track name back and the file size didn't change. However, the contents of the file are still drastically different (vastly more changed than merely the letter in the track name).I'm worried that Rhythmbox is doing something dreadful like decoding the file, changing the track name, and then completely re-encoding the file from scratch (meaning it runs the decoded audio through the lossy encoder to regenerate the file). Does anyone know whether or not Rhythmbox is doing this when the user edits the meta data (like the track name, artist, etc.)?
