General :: Windows - Fastest (and Least Number Of Steps) Way To Migrate Hard Drive Formats?

Feb 19, 2011

I have an ext2 formatted disk (linux) and I need to reformat it to NTFS (windows). Problem is, I have to retain the 750 GB of data that's on the disk. What's the quickest (least number of steps) way to accomplish this? I do have a spare 1TB disk now to help with the transfer.

Background.I've been using XBMC Live for a couple of years, but with all the problems I've been having lately, I'm moving over to the Windows version. Unfortunately all of my media is stored on an ext2 formatted disk (not the same disk as the OS disk).I was thinking of loading up an Ubuntu live disk, and installing ntfs-config. Mount my secondary disk (already formatted NTFS), transfer the files, reformat the original drive, load windows and transfer the files back.

General :: Boot Fedora Live CD Iso From A Hard Drive?

Nov 11, 2010

I tried to use Grub to boot the Fedora 14 Live CD from its ISO image (SHA256 verified) on the hard drive. I put Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso in the root directory of the FAT32 partition D: (sda5) then extracted isolinux from this ISO, and put it on D: I followed the isolinux.cfg file, and wrote a menu.lst as follows:

title Fedora 14 Live CD
root (hd0,4)
kernel (hd0,4)/isolinux/vmlinuz0 root=live:CDLABEL=Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-Desktop rootfstype=auto ro liveimg quiet rhgb
initrd (hd0,4)/isolinux/initrd0.img

However Grub told me: No root device found. Boot has failed. Sleeping forever. Here's the contents of isolinux.cfg:

CentOS 5 Server :: Easy Install From Usb To Hard Drive?

By using ISO2USB for CentOS/RedHat I installed with out having to burn A single cd or dvd. Super easy and free from source forge. Link[URL]... Unplug the USB drive and take it to the machine to be installed.Reboot the machine and choose USB boot option in the BIOS boot menu. Choose Hard drive installation method and select /dev/sdb1 as partition that holds ISO images. Use sda drive for installation and choose to review the partitioning layout. In advanced bootloader options, change drive order to "sda sdb". Proceed with the installation.

So easy it should be a tool in every admins box. I hope I saved you some time and headaches.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Install To Hard Drive" Feature Of The F14 X86_64 Desktop Disk?

Jan 5, 2011

I managed to have the ATI Catalyst driver (10.12) installed on a machine with F14 x86_64, Radeon HD 57xx and I also installed the ATI SDK Samples for OpenCL. ATI Catalyst reports OpenGL fine, glxinfo is fine, all OpenCL samples that do not use OpenGL are working fine. I used the "install to hard drive" feature of the F14 x86_64 desktop disk. Problem: which headers and libraries do I need to install in order to use OpenGL in an application? I would also like to have the OpenCL working on the system for another application.

Previously I had a small application working with SDL + Mesa library on FC9 using software rendering, but after F14 installation and ATI card addition the app is not working. Files gl.h, glu.h are missing. I checked the system and I found only a glew.h header. I tried linking against glew but it complains about glu.h (file not found).

I looked on the Internet and I found a post that someone suggested installing xorg-x11-devel, but there is no such package. I tried installing libX11-devel...f1.x86_64 but the gl.h/glu.h were still missing. I tried compiling the latest Mesa library with make linux-dri-x86_64 and it complains about egl. All dependencies have been checked (dri2proto, X11 version, libdrm, kernel version). After Mesa installation ATI Catalyst is no longer reporting OpenGL and glxinfo is not working. Am I supposed to install just the Mesa library without the ATI driver? Am I supposed to use glew only with the ATI driver?

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting From Second Hard Drive (no BIOS Option)

Jul 17, 2010

I have a Sony VAIO AR series, it contains two separate 120GB hard drives that were originally configured in a raid. They're called hd0, and hd1. I disabled the raid and partitioned hd1 in 3 ways, one medium sized partition for the operating system (ext4), one large partition for storage (ext4) and one small partition for Swap space. I then installed Ubuntu onto hd1 with help from UNetbootin. After installation went fine I loaded up Windows installer, created two NTFS partitions, one medium and one large, and installed Windows 7 of the medium sized partition. Now I can't figure out how to boot into the Ubuntu side on hd1. Needless to say, in Windows, hd1 is not visable at all. I can see my two NTFS partitions fine.

When booting up I go through two main screens. The first screen "Matrix Storage Manager Option ROM," lists the physical disks (0, and 1.) and gives me the option to enter configuration with [cntrl+i]. The second screen gives me a list of options to boot from, Yet they are all Windows options and many are redundant. The list includes "Enter Command Line," which when selected tells me "Boot failed! Press any key to enter command line." command line brings me to "grub>" I tried booting Ubuntu from this command line, but don't have much to work with here. I followed this guide, but it didn't take me to completion and I'm not sure where to go from here. http://www.mepis.org/docs/en/index.p...m_command_line

OpenSUSE Network :: WD Live Cannot See USB Hard Drive On 11.3

Oct 4, 2010

I just setup an old computer with Suse 11.3. My goal is to store all my movies and stuff on the Suse box and access them through my home network. I have 11.3 installed, got the network setup and working, can access the internet, access files to/from my laptop to Suse box, and can even access movies/files on the Suse box from my WD Live media box. The problem is: when I add an external drive to the Suse box my WD Live does not totally 'see' it. he external USB drive is accessable on the Suse box as I've moved files to and from this external USB drive. The drive is a WD MyBook. I setup sharing in Samba and the WD Live sees the drive but cannot see the files. Is this a permission thing? Pretty sure I setup Samba correctly as I share several directories in the Suse box.

Ubuntu :: Copy Files From Hard Drive With Live CD?

Mar 14, 2011

Anyway, it won't boot and instead takes me to a screen where it says "press s to skip mounting, or press m to recover manually" or something like that. I've pressed S, and then it tells me that it can't find /tmp or something, and I have to turn it off and back on to do anything. Pressing M doesn't help much either... at least not for a mostly-linux-idiot like me. I would do a clean install, but there are a few files I absolutely have to have from the hard drive. recover the files I need from my hard drive to a usb drive while using a Live CD?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot From Hard Drive OR Live CD?

May 9, 2011

I have just finished building a new computer and it booted with no problems from the hard drive to ubuntu 10.10 (it was a hard drive from a previous computer and had ubuntu installed). After less than a minute though it froze up completely. I restarted and now cannot get ubuntu to boot. I get to GRUB with no problems but when I try to boot ubuntu I get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner and it hangs indefinitely.

I tried to boot from a live cd to see if there was anything I could do but I get as far as the screen to choose "Try Ubuntu" or "Install" and both choices leave me on a black screen with the mouse icon. I can move the mouse but nothing else. I have tried the Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit, 11.04 64-bit, 11.04 32-bit and even Mythbuntu, which I had on a cd from a magazine. I get the same result with all of these.

On the other hand, OpenSUSE 11.4 boots from the Live CD fine and I installed it and it boots from the hard drive. This is good news but I would much prefer Ubuntu, as I'm more used to it. Am I doing something wrong or have I any hope?

The computer specs are:
Processor: AMD phenom II X2 555
Motherboard: Asus M4A88TD V-EVO
Memory: G-Skill Ripjaws 4GB Dual channel
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 200GB
